I have a stack of them that are just taking up space on a shelf. Actually I go to the net not when I want a recipe. Seems like the old school cook books have long since served their purpose. I am doing this as part of my downsizing/declutter process.
Have you done this? Do you find that you miss your books at all? |

when we moved I purged a lot of cookbooks. the only ones I kept were my Gooseberry Patch and Barefoot Contessa ones.

I used to collect cookbooks but hardly used any of them after the first few times. I decluttered/purged last year and donated most of them, only keeping a few sentimental gifts and a few that I do refer to regularly. Like you, I get most of my recipes on-line now and the books were unnecessarily taking up too much space. No, I really don't miss them at all.

I got rid of most of mine but I still have a few favorites. I like looking through them and I prefer book form to internet, though I do look things up to compare recipes sometimes.

I love cookbooks ... I collect them and always get them as gifts ... I read them cover to cover but I hardly ever cook from them  I won't be getting rid of mine any time soon but I can see why you would ... |

I got rid of mine years ago...I, too, collected Gooseberry Patch Cookbooks...more for the artwork than the recipes. I realized they were just taking up space. I have 3 cookbooks....2 Pioneer Woman (which I can get the recipes online but I like them) and one old Betty Crocker that I got when I married. Everything else I lift from Foodnetwork.com or Recipes.com. I do print up recipes I like and have a file for them.

I only have a couple, but I do use them. My favorite being one from the 50's that has basic, useful information that you really should know, but forget-things like how to long to roast a chicken, or a basic yellow cake recipe. The other one is a junior league cookbook from over on the coast, and it has tons of seafood recipes that are really good.
Pretty much everything else comes from the internet and I love pinterest for fulfilling my food porn needs.

I need to do this. Like everything else I hate to get rid of them because I might need them someday. But when I go to look through a book for a recipe, I usually give up quickly and go to the computer anyway. I have a LOT of gooseberry patch ones too plus I collected almost all of the TOH annuals. I might just keep a few favorites and not worry about the rest. It's way past time.

Several years ago, I went through my cookbooks - I kept 3 of them because I did use them and I gave all the rest to Goodwill, I haven't missed them a bit.

I got rid of everything but a southern living cookbook I bought 25 years ago and a salsa book from about 15 years ago There are several recipes in each that I love. I got rid of everything else and use the net too. It did free up a bunch of space and I haven't missed them all. Been a couple of years since I did it.

I got rid of almost all of mine. I kept my grandma's old Betty Crocker cookbook and 2 or 3 small ones I remember looking through as a little girl for sentimental reasons.

I hate trying to cook a recipe from my computer on the other end of the house from the kitchen, don't trust myself not to spill on the laptop, and don't need to print recipes and have more paper in the house so purging cookbooks sounds awful to me. Do they really take up that much space? |

I've kept the basics like BH&G, Betty Crocker, Good Housekeeping and Joy of Cooking. And I have a small issue with buying Taste of Home special editions. Walmart frequently puts them on the 3 for $10 rack at the checkout.  |

Do they really take up that much space? This is so me! I tried twice to cook something w/my laptop open I was so afraid I'd spill something or knock it off the counter that I moved it to the table. What a pain it was having to run back & forth. I have taken to printing out recipes & I keep them in a binder in page protectors, but I have some abnormal attachment to my cookbooks and will only donate one if I truly feel I won't make any of the recipes in it. |

I have eleventy kabillion cookbooks. Did get rid of 14 years of Taste of Home type magazines (because I had the yearbooks). I mostly cook from the internet though. I use my iPad. I put it in a two gallon ziploc bag on my island. Works well. If I end up liking the recipe I print it out.

Pretty sure you could summon up any recipe on the nets if you tried hard enough. Me, I love the cookbooks I inherited from family and those I was forced to purchase through school fund-raisers.

I cleared mine out a couple of years ago, but kept a handful. I rarely cook anymore, so most of those that I kept I did so for sentimental reasons.

I am in the middle of a kitchen re-do and just two days ago threw out almost 30 cookbooks. I kept the Betty Crocker that was the first cookbook that I ever owned and The Art of Mexican Cooking by Diana Kennedy. The rest went in the trash. I did keep my old recipe file box with my handwritten recipes but I use the Internet now and it was soooo freeing to get rid of them.

It appears that I can and should purge my 50 years of cook books. Honestly they just sit there and I have not opened on in years. And YES..I have a bunch. So into the thrift store box they will go. I do have a small file box with some old family recipes that I will keep. Living on my own now I don't cook much so no need for the books.

I have a bunch of cookbooks. I just got them all gathered together in one place the other day. My goal is to go through them and find the recipes I want to try. I will then try them. If they turn out will I will make a copy of the recipe and put it in my favorite binder and then get rid of the cookbook. No one should have this many cookbooks, especially with all that you can find online now.

I have purged cookbooks in the past as I get most of my recipes from Pinterest or other online sources. However, if I really like an internet recipe, I print it out and add it to one of the five HUGE binders in which I've been collecting recipes since I was in high school. So I don't think I will ever be completely paperless.

Yep, the only cookbook I've kept is one that my dad put together for me as a wedding gift. All other's I've gotten rid of. I have a Demi (electronic recipe box) and then I use Pinterest and Allrecipes. Don't regret it one bit.

We gave away most of ours. DH kept one that was more a cooking reference book than a cookbook and the ones that came with our appliances. I kept one that was a community type cookbook, as well as my recipes cards and a binder I made years ago with recipes clipped from magazines. All the rest we packed up. And we packed up years of Gourmet & Vegetarian Times magazines as well. It was nice to free up all of that space in our pantry, let me tell you. |

I think I am ready to get rid of most of mine as well. I desperately need the space and haven't used the cookbooks for a loooong time. Most of the ones I have are old church cookbooks, which is why I have somewhat of a loyalty to keeping them. But, I can't remember making any recipes from them ever. I might pull them out this weekend and look at them to see if there are any useful recipes, then make the decision. Like the OP, I use the internet for recipes and cooking tutorials now.
