Happy New Year Readers!
I truly wish you all a new year filled with health, joy and hope.
I read one book this week: People of the Book
Another, "interesting characters interconnected across centuries" novel. It took me a while to read. It is slow but engrossing.
I've seen this one show up on a few fellow reader's "best" lists. I'm glad I finally gave it a try. It is a story loosely based on the Haggadah of Sarajevo.
If the above description sounds like your type of novel, it's worth your time.
What did you read this week?
Also, did you reach your reading goal (if you have one) for 2016?
I did not. I was supposed to read 50. I read 33. This is the least amount I've read in about four years. I peaked at around 90 a couple years ago.
How about you? What's your goal for 2017? I'm shooting for 52.

My reading goal last year was 120 and I read (well listened to - they were all audio) 132 books. This year I've set it at 100 initially...I did last year too, but then I was way ahead so I revised it to 120.

I didn't have a goal last year but have set one for 52 books in 2017. Starting off with Redemption Road by John Hart which I believe was a recommendation from here.

I read Sisters One, Two, Three by Nancy Star this week - it was a free Amazon offer. While it was no great masterpiece, I enjoyed it very much and would give it 4 out of 5 stars. I have been working on Jodi Picoult's newest book, Small Great Things. As usual, its very good but tough subject matter. www.amazon.com/dp/B01AQNYZ3I/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1I keep putting it down and re-starting it...not because it's bad but the topic just makes me sad.

I set a goal of 52 books this year, and ended up reading 82. Part of that was because I was laid up for 5 weeks with a broken ankle and had lots of reading time.
My last book of the year, which I finished yesterday, was "Belgravia" by Julian Fellowes, who wrote the Downton Abbey series. This was pretty good, nice descriptions and likeable characters. Kinda slow but enjoyable. If you liked DA you might like this book.

Happy New Year Readers!
I finished 2016 with The Fate of the Tearling - it was a nice wrap up of the trilogy; and in honor of Carrie Fisher's passing, I picked up Princess Diarist. This was not the title to pick up to honor Carrie Fisher - it was really weak - I need to pick up one of her other titles.
I set a goal of 70 books last year, and I made the goal. I set a goal for 60 books this year - I have some other personal goals that I want to steer my focus towards this year.
Happy reading!

I finished Underground Airlines by Ben Winters, and I thought it was very good. He created a pretty plausible scenario of what slavery would look like in modern America.
And I read The Mandibles, A Family 2029-2047 by Lionel Shriver. This was pretty good, too, the story of an extended family in the not-too-distant future and what happens to them when the economy goes through a catastrophic crash. It wasn't perfect, but I did find it interesting and a little scary.
I read 73 books in 2016, way off my usual pace. I don't really set reading goals, but I'd like to break 100 this year at least. Happy New Year to you all!

I read THE GIRL IN CABIN 10 and enjoyed it.
It was quick, easy and engaging. It won't win any awards for eloquent writing but I was hooked and entertained.
Now I'm reading KAROLINA'S TWINS by Ronald Balson. I've only just started but write up says it's about a Jewish young woman who lived in Poland during WWII and her search for her best friend's twin daughters. The story comes out in flashbacks as she,as now an old woman, tells the lawyer / detective team from Balson's previous two books that I really enjoyed - Once We Were Brothers and Saving Sophie. I'm hooked on this story already.
Paige
ETA - I've never thought of a book goal for a year. If I did I'd say 1 a week would be nice but when my kids are busy and in need of help I don't always meet that quota. Maybe I should hope for 1 every 2 weeks, So maybe 26.

I read 29 books in 2016! Some I read others I switched back and forth between listening to and reading. Many of these books have been suggested by y'all. Thank you for sharing your love of books. The final book for me of 2016 was Small Great Things. I absolutely loved it! The characters were authentic and believable. The first book of 2017 is another book that has been suggested by my fellow book lovers, The Couple Next Door. I hope that I'm able to finish it before my loan from the library expires and it disappears from my Kindle. It's not renewable since there's a waiting list for it. LOL! I guess I'll just have to spend extra time reading!

I did terrible with my book goal for 2016. It was 30 and I only read 15. I'll blame my eye surgery on this fail.
My 2017 goal is 30 again. I'm currently reading The Boys in the Boat based on recommendations here. I'm 20% through and liking it.

My standard goal is 52 a year and I usually exceed that, but not in 2016; I read 50.
I finished 3 books this past week. The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu. It's about a librarian who saved thousands of priceless manuscripts from Al Quaeda in North Africa. Primarily the book is about the history and rise of extreme Islam in North Africa. It was very interesting and scary too because this is real history.
I also read the Watchmaker of Filigree Street and had really high hopes for this one and instead it was a huge bust. The book is part steampunk, part historical fiction, part mystery and it doesn't do well in any genre. The ending was awful. Usually I won't stick with a horrible book, but I finished it with the vain hope that it get better.
Fortunately, I ended the year on a great book The News of the World. In this novel a 72 year old Civil War veteran who travels the West reading newspaper aloud in small towns agrees to take a 10 year girl who was kidnapped by the Kiowa back to her remaining family. The two travel 400 miles thru Indian territory and many adventures. They form a bond and the man becomes conflicted with his decision to return her to her family.

Now am reading Under the Influence - Maynard and just a few pages into it and I really like it! I loved that book, it was one of my best reads of last year. This week I read Some Girls Do by Clodagh Murphy It was a light, fluffy read that's genuinely funny in parts. A scene about sex and food had me giggling out loud. I'm now reading It by Stephen KingMy reading challenge was 25 and I read 30. I've set it at 30 this year.

I met my Goodreads goal of 45. I actually surpassed it as I reread 3 books and I probably read at least 20 indie romance books that I don't record (haha). I may lower my goal to 40 this year, I have quite a few that are pretty long so I want to enjoy them without being pressured to complete books.
I'm in the middle of reading one book and listening to another so I'll just share when I finished.

Hi readers! I'm back after having a long streak of not reading, then reading very slowly and feeling discouraged by all the books I want to read but can't seem to get to.
My goal last year was 52, but I got so far off track last fall, that I really just wanted to not read less than I did the year before. I read all day NYE so I could count the book that put me dead even with 2015.
The book I just finished was Big Little Lies by Lianne Moriarty. I keep seeing previews for the miniseries on HBO, so I bought this on a whim (full price at Barnes & Noble) in order to read the book first. I thought it was great, definitely film worthy. It was the first book in months that I've had trouble putting down. It's the third I've read by the author and I'm ready to dive right in to her other novels.

I read 106 books this year. I set my goal at 120, so I didn't make it, but that's okay. I have been keeping track of the books I have read for 24 years - the least I have read in a year is 91 and the most is 139, so I think 120 is a pretty good goal and that will be mine (again) for 2017.
I finished the year with a couple of good books.
Lassoing the Sun: A Year in America's National Parks by Mark Woods. I believe this was recommended by @elaynef I really enjoyed this one. The year the author turned 50, he applied for and received a fellowship that allowed him to take a year off and visit the national parks. Early into the year, his mother receives a fatal cancer diagnosis. This book is not only the story of our national parks, but a story about the author's life - his family and the loss of his mother. He visits both the parks you would expect - Yellowstone, Yosemite - and also places I had never heard of like the Gateway National Recreation Area.
Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton. The story of an aging astronomer, Augustine, stationed in the Arctic and an astronaut returning from a trip to Jupiter. Some type of cataclysmic event has happened on earth and there appear to be no people left except for Augustine and the crew of the Jupiter mission. I liked this one, although it was very open ended - I really wanted to know what happened after the book ended.

I finished one book last week which put me at 42 books for last year. Which was exactly what I read in 2015. After Carrie Fishers death I picked up Wishful Drinking. I read it in one day. It was very funny, part sad and fascinating to read about all those interwoven Hollywood relationships.

I had a couple of unfinished books that I got done just as the year was ending. I finished Homegoing which was very good and I loved that it was such a thorough story of a family though the generations!
I also finished Lists of Note which was recommended here although my library ebook had some sort of malfunction and would occasionally give me the page with the description of the list but then would not load the actual list. But I did enjoy it and feel so much better about my list making knowing I am in such good company.
Lastly, I finished Fantastic Beasts which was a fun story with little connections to the rest of the Harry Potter series.
My goal for the year was 60 and I read 57. In the last six years since I started keeping track on Goodreads I have read either 55 or 57 each year so maybe I should stop trying for 60 because it does not appear that it will happen.

I love lazy weekends and this time of year offers them.
I read Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. I enjoyed the story and had a lot of fun with the novelty.
Louisa by Simone Zelitch was a disappointment. It was a modern retelling of The Book of Ruth with a mother and daughter-in-law in immediate post World War II Israel. The setup was wonderful the execution was not.
For Book Club, I read Yes, Chef by Marcus Samuelsson. I am not that much of a cook to find detailed discussions about working through a recipe that interesting, and he's an interesting character, not always likeable.
To finish the year, I read Egg and Spoon by Gregory Maguire. I hated his "Wicked" and was skeptical, but this one was a young adult book set in Tsarist Russia. The squick factor wasn't there for me, but I never quite related to the characters although I enjoyed the fairy tale elements.
I didn't have the most fabulous reading year, I read 109 which exceeded by goal of 100 but I have read more in previous years.

My 2016 goal was 52 books and I finished with 60 read, so I'm pretty happy because I had a couple slumps in there!
I just finished up The Opportunist by Tarryn Fisher, who is a new author to me. It was the first in a series and it was one of those that ended with you going NOOOOOOOOOO and having to jump right into the next one. That one is Dirty Red which I am well into, and then I will regard the third one, Thief

I only read 13 books in 2016. I started logging my reading back in 2004, and this is the least I've read in a year. My only goal is to remedy that situation this year and read more than 13!
I'm currently reading David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell. I'm changing up a few habits so it doesn't take me so long to get through non-fiction (which I enjoy but it takes me a while to get through). I did read for nearly two hours this morning waiting for my car to get fixed so that took care of nearly half the book! I really enjoy his writing style and how he takes what seem like unrelated concepts and ties them all together.
I'm also keeping up with my DD and reading the Sunshine State Young Readers Awards books (in alphabetical order!). I just started Dinosaur Boy, which, not surprisingly, is about a kid who is part dinosaur. I believe there's aliens involved as well. Either way it's pretty fluffy but cute.

Agreed! It was also one of my faves from last year. I also really enjoyed Labor Day by her as well. I found two books by her at the used book sale at the library that are now in my TBR pile. I read Wool by Huge Howey. The book is kind of a short story combined into a trilogy and is dystopian. I enjoyed it. 4/5 stars. I exactly met my reading goal - 70 for year. I set my goal for 2017 as the same. Lisa

Happy New Year everyone!
I ended the year with The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain. Thoroughly enjoyed, I gave it 5 stars.
Then I read The Sibling Connection by Jane Mersky Leder. Eh, a little interesting but not a whole lot there.
Right now I'm reading Cozy Christmas Shorts by Gemma Halliday (and others.) It's a collection of holiday short stories; okay, but nothing to get all excited about. It reminds me of why I don't read short stories!
I'm also reading The Confession by John Grisham. I'm enjoying it so far, but then, it's John Grisham! lol
My GR goal for the year was 40, and I read 58 - yay me!! I set this year's for 45 becasue I anticipate that we're going to be a lot busier this year than last, so my reading time may be iffy.

Happy New Year everyone! And let me just say how much I love this thread and how much I appreciate every Pea on it. I love hearing all of the books you have read and through the year have gotten so many wonderful recommendations from so many of you.
This past week I read two books. First up was The Story of Land and Sea by Katy Simpson Smith. This book I picked up at my local library. I have to be truthful, I was draw to it by the cover and because of two things-it was historical fiction and it was I though going to be about the sea. It looked promising-"Set in a small coastal town in North Carolina during the waning years of the American Revolution this incandescent (how I love that word-how it sounds and what it means) debut novel follows three generations of family" from goodreads.com Oh, I thought, sounds like my kind of book.
I wanted to like it. I really did. I read the entire book. I kept waiting for it to get better. It had all of the right ingredients. Great writing. Wonderful setting. Pretty good characters. So what happened? No storyline is what happened. Well, there was one. Obviously there had to be. But it just kept kind of wandering along here and there in my opinion. I don't need all books to end with a happy ending. That would be boring. But this one felt empty. Not my favorite by a very long shot. I gave it 3 stars.
Next I read The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. Oh my goodness, this author can write! Earlier this year I read her recent book, To the Bright Edge of the World, which I rated 5 stars and really enjoyed. Because of that I sought out her other books and chose her first novel The Snow Child to read next. I can't choose which I like best, but I think it's got to be this one-The Snow Child, which by the way ended up being a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in fiction. In my opinion it should have won. It is an incredible novel. I highly recommend it if you haven't read it. This novel has everything. A wonderful story line, exquisite detail-it takes place in Alaska and I could feel the frost as I was reading about it, characters you grow to know and care about. I gave this book 5 stars, but I'd give it 10 if that were possible. My favorite book of the year. I'm buying this in a hard copy to keep for myself.
