Earlier this week we spent two nights camping in Algonquin Park in Ontario, Canada. We have gone many many times in summer, but never in winter. I think I am converted! It was beautiful, deserted, and did I mention beautiful? Here are a few photos to prove it: We spent most of our time snowshoeing and skating/playing hockey: We spent our nights in a yurt, a permanent structure in the park - there are maybe 10 of them in Algonquin: Inside there are bunk beds, a table and chairs, an overhead light fixture, and yes, an electric heater! We had a bit of magic along the way... And we made a side trip to Arrowhead Provincial Park on the way home for some tubing (sadly, their famous ice trail is not yet open for the season): It was a great way to fill the long stretch of time between New Year's and when the kids go back to school on Monday. If you've never tried winter camping, I highly recommend it! We are already talking about booking again for next year.

Awesome! Love the pics. What is the animal? Pine Marten? Fisher? Mink? Weasel?

Your pictures are amazing! I could maybe winter camp in a yurt. Our state parks system has a handful of campgrounds with yurts and we've talked about trying one. We usually tent camp. DH & I went in November and while daytime temps were up to 65, 40 is cold in a three season tent without a heater.

I also wondered what the animal was too! He looks different than a fox. I love that you have a yurt! Although I'm kinda fascinated that you do it in the winter. Is it harder to take up and down. My folks have one. They had some property in Oregon and had the yurt. (they now have a small farm in Northern Utah and it's on that property) It had a kitchen and living area, bathroom and a small loft. I know there are different sizes. But I hadn't thought of the camping idea of it.We do 'roughin it' camping but not in winter! You are adventerous I am impressed! And I love the hockey! Looks like a lot of fun!

Lovely photos. My dtr went what they called snow camping when her kids were young. Not a fan of cold weather but all 4 of her kids now live in WI.

How pretty! Y'all are made of sturdier stock than me. Back when I was young and poor (and had a better back) we used to camp a lot at the beach. Anastasia was our favorite (St. Augustine) because everyone could roll out of the tent and go surfing in the early morning. It never snowed though.

But....how cold is the bathroom?? It's heated... Thank goodness! It was next to the skating rink and the warm air hand dryers came in handy when our fingers got too cold.

The yurt belongs to the park and it's a permanent, year round structure. So, no setting up your campsite in the cold... You just walk right in and they already have the heat going for you.

Beautiful photos! Did that bird just land on her hand? Am I seeing that right? Yes! It's a chickadee, and they are pretty brazen little fellows. But it also makes me wonder if they are used to being fed (which technically you are not supposed to do in the park).
