Hello, fellow bargain hunters. It's been awhile. Grab a coffee, I've got a long post.
Lots of sickness at my house and once we all finally got over it a little friend came for a sleepover and then we had round two. I haven't been out doing much bargain hunting since mid December.
In December I got at Goodwill: two vintage Christmas ornaments for $1 each. At Salvation Army, where I haven't been in many months, the large, yellow Pyrex mixing bowl; pink, Pyrex divided casserole/vege dish; and small Pyrex loaf pan with green flower pattern. At Savers: a bag of vintage ornaments from the 70s. They are cloth. I sewed them onto a sweater to make my husband something to wear for any ugly sweater contest. Included with the bag, but not sewn onto the sweater, was one of the first yarn Hallmark ornaments so that was fun.
Woot Woot, he was a winner. He won a snowman mug from Target, a tin of Starbucks peppermint hotchocolate and a peppermint chocolate drink spoon.
I went to an auction house with my sisters a week ago. They were having a tag sale to clear out the backrooms. I got: vintage Little Kiddles avintage tin from England Staffordshire soapdish never used vintage Christmas cards (60s or earlier) a few kiddie Valentines unused vintage ice skates to hang on the front door vintage Rudolph, plastic bank, that looks like the nose will light up
I went back this past weekend with my husband because they were supposed to have more stuff and boy did they. The amount of stuff they had was crazy. The tough thing is that there are no prices and you're supposed to make a pile and get a price. I wasn't a fan of doing it that way.
I saw a box of watercolor paintings and started picking some out. Asked the guy how much so I knew if it was in my price range. He tells me one price for what I've already picked, another price for the whole box. I decided to go with what I had picked out to that point and kept shopping. I saw some little wooden bowling pins in the prettiest colors and a miniature metal chair and added those to my pile. I found a tiny ceramic pixie that obviously is supposed to sit on something and two miniature wooden santas in their original packaging and addded those to my pile. Found some vintage Christmas postcards, some used and some not, and added those to my pile.
Went into their cellar which is the same size as the main floor. There is so much stuff down there that you couldn't even get close enough to some of it to look at. In the cellar I found a vintage, ceramic, small bowl that matches one I got in November at my usual auction place.
At the register, I tell the woman what the man gave me for a price for the paintings and ask how much for the other stuff. She told me a price, which of course, is more than I want to spend. I ask her how much if I get the whole box of watercolors and the other stuff. The price she gives me is what the man told me earlier for the box of paintings. While it is more than I would prefer to spend in one outing it is a fair price, and with my husband now out at the car I decided to do it. I will sell the ones that I don't want at a tag sale to recoup some of the money. When I sort them, I'll count them, and tell you how many I got.
I'm considering mounting some of the paintings on foam core so I can hang them without putting holes in the walls. If anyone has suggestions on other things I can do with some of the paintings I'd love to hear them.
I know you ladies have been out shopping, spill it, what have you found?

Nothing earth shattering, but I did get a very cool probably 3 foot tall Little People Garage/Car track thing for 4 99. It is in perfect condition, so I was pretty excited, I love Little People sets, they never go out of style. I also got a couple of nice hardback kids books for 79 cents, a Dr. Seuss, Eloise at Christmas and a Richard Scarey Busytown. One of our local thrift stores just closed unexpectedly, so I am down to just the Humane Society, which I love to support, I am hoping they start getting the donations the other store did and not the .Goodwill. This is the garage I got, I guess it is not quite 3 feet, but over 2. www.amazon.com/Little-People-Wheelies-Stand-Rampway/dp/B0045UBG6I

I found two plates that match my Pfaltzgraff Christmas dishes for 0.75 ea and a metal candle holder with spoons and forks for our retiring cafeteria manager. Both at my local GW.
I searched for more dishes, plates, cups, bowl etc...but only found the two plates. Makes me wonder about the story behind them even more.

My last thrifting adventure was NYE day when we realized it was the last day for a 30% discount coupon we got for donating at a little neighborhood thrift store and since we would be driving right by, we stopped in. My sweetie was taking forever in the book section - he finds cheap books with 30% off irresistible - so I wandered over to jewelry. The jewelry in this place is crazy over-priced so I never buy there, but hanging up on a wall with their .99 cheap plastic bangles was a carved Bakelite bracelet! I snatched that baby up so fast I think I broke the sound barrier. Earlier that day we had found 3 Bakelite serving utensils for $2.68 at Goodwill, but a .99 carved piece of Bakelite is my thrifting unicorn. (Actually .69 after the coupon!)

The last few weeks, I have been the giver to the gods of Goodwill, paying it forwards, backwards, and every other way. In other words, I am cleaning out the house. I am moving (well, now pretty much moved) from Phx to Inland Empire area and downsizing by about 1400 square feet. I hate yard sales, so I priced a couple of items to sell quickly on facebook, but the overwhelming majority went to our Goodwill. I know that others will be excited to find some of the treasures that I donated. I am slowly unpacking and curating the treasures that I kept. I did find a Hard Rock Cafe shot glass for a buck at Goodwill, which I donated to DD23's Hard Rock glassware collection.

It's one of the things I like about them. Bummer on the thrift store closing. Maybe they lost their lease and will open elsewhere. Hopefully the Humane Society does a little advertising to remind people that they accept donations so some of the usual thrift store donations start funneling to them.

You need to go back again just in case the rest weren't put out for sale yet. I've seen sets of things get split up, so you just never know. At .75 each it's worth another check.

I had a bunch when I was a kid. I sold all but two of them when I moved out of my family home. They were in mint condition and I had a ton of them and playsets. The perfume ones were my favorite. I'd take them out of the bottle, dance them around and, and put them back in so they wouldn't lose their scent. When I sold them, they still had their scent. I had the Lily of the Valley, along with all of the other perfume ones, but I loved the Rose one even more. I'll never forget winning the grape soda one at a birthday party. I still have the little monkey and the bunny.

I'm new to thrift stores and went my first time last November. Now I'm there once a week to see what's new. I also do Freecycle, and it's hard to say what I do more -- take in or give away.
My happiest find at the thrift store was a complete, 4-piece place setting of Christmas dinnerware that goes with a 4-piece set I had from the 80s and which I had subsequently given to my daughter. She has such fond memories of us using them every Christmas . I casually asked the woman how much the set cost and she said she'd sell them for $5. I stayed calm, stopped myself from doing the happy dance, dished out the $5, took them and ran. My daughter was crying when I gave them to her.
Other items I've gotten: a stuffed standing Christmas child (who went outside my door and held a live a Christmas tree in her arms this year), some vintage ornaments, and a Wilson lazy Susan for frosting a cake ($1). On Freecycle I gave away a child's play table (for trains and cars),a crystal candy dish, and a bag of wooden blocks.
Now I'm looking for a twin headboard/bed for my grandson.
What are the Facebook groups some of you mention?

Great finds ladies. Another Little Kiddles lover here, I had forgotten about the scented ones. A friend of mine had bought a Little Kiddles house for her niece to play and it was just adorable.
Scoop on the bakelite bracelet!! I like to think I would spot one and I do check costume jewelry grab tables.

I'm new to thrift stores and went my first time last November. Now I'm there once a week to see what's new. It is quite addicting isn't it! I try to stop by my favorite shop once a week because they always seem to have new stuff. I made a great fabric haul right before New Year's. They were trying to clear out all the old stuff and had nearly the entire store on sale at half off. As I was checking out the fabric department, the volunteer was straightening things up and told me she was about to bring out 2 more boxes of fabric. I found a few gorgeous pieces of decorator fabric as I helped her empty the boxes and stock the shelves. As we talked she was telling me about the other stuff in the back. Before it was over, she was bringing stuff out of the back for me to look at. I'm not sure if I should be embarrassed or not! It's obvious I love fabric...and just might have an acquisition problem! I ended up with 10 pieces of fabric in various sized for just $10. There is a gorgeous piece of Belgian linen ["Pasha" by Raoul Textiles], a small piece of Schumacher "Maya Ikat", a 2+ yd. piece of vintage Woodco screen print, an embroidered taupe linen, 1 yd of raw silk, a 1+ yd piece of med. brown linen, a piece of fuschia velveteen, 4 yds of ecru cotton batiste, and a nice black with small tan embroidered dots. Some of this is full width while others are only partial widths, leftover from decorating projects. Those are perfect for pillows. Also got a piece of flannel with prints of dog related sayings. That will be used for some kennel mats I plan to make and donate this year. One of the items she brought out from the back was a 15 yard roll of royal blue velvet. At only 36" wide, it was obviously vintage but in pristine condition. I don't know how long I stood there thinking that one over, but in the end decided the price was still too much at half price, I had no project I could use it for and have absolutely no where to put it. My resolution for this year is that I cannot 'save' all the good stuff that I find. I am trying to be good and leave some things for others to save. That velvet will always haunt me, but leaving it behind was the right thing to do. Save

I've not found anything of note lately. Some shirts and a new pair of flannel pajama pants for my son. I did discover that my local SA has .69 Saturdays where all 1/2 price clothing and nic-nacs are .69. I don't usually go on Saturdays, but I will now.

I haven't had a chance to go thrifting for quite some time, however I was in Target on New Year's Eve, Eve! and found these two Nate Berkus stools for only $26 each, regular $89 each. We donated our dining room table and chairs to GW last fall and bought a much smaller table from our FB garage sale page for $10. Our daughter gave us 3 really cute chairs and I had been on the hunt for a bench for the other side, when I found these. The chrome isn't my thing so I am going to paint them the same color(oregano) that I painted the chairs. I haven't decided if I am going to recover the seats or leave them black. I also got this cute tree for $4.50 at WM last week.

Stopped by the thrift store on the way to my ortho appointment this afternoon. DD is taking my Churchill Blue Willow china set when she moves next month and I am on the lookout for a few replacement pieces. Didn't find the bowls & plate I need, but found a cute little bowl, perhaps for condiments? It was just $2. No fabric today but I did find another....scarf! This is a gorgeous blue Liberty silk scarf, about 36" square. Best of all it was only $5! I've really reached the point where I don't need anymore scarves, but it's so hard to pass up a pretty one, especially when the price is so good!
ETA: Researched and found that the little bowl is an open sugar bowl. It will make a great little condiment bowl as well though. DD was happy with it when I showed it to her.Save

I've only been to Goodwill once so far since Christmas but I had a good day. I found a pair of "Not Your Daughter's Jeans" that fit perfectly (well I do have to get them hemmed) for 5.00! And they look brand new! Normally at Goodwill these sell for $15.00, but for some reason this particular pair didn't have the price tag on them that says $15.00. I was the last person to check out and yes, perhaps I should have said something but I didn't. Had it been any other thrift store I certainly would have, but I don't care for Goodwill's policies. The clerk was ready to go home, so she just rung them up and threw them in the bag. All jeans at Goodwill are $5.99.
I also found a wonderful black wool/cotton sweater from Anne Taylor Loft that zips up a bit side ways (not quite diagonally but just a bit in that direction) and has two zip pockets on the side. It also fits perfectly even though it isn't a petite. This one was marked $12.00 but it was worth it because of the quality of the material and the design.
My last find a petite (I wear a petite size on top) Talbot's white pima cotton pull over sweater in a cute textured knit that looks brand new. Can't remember what I paid for this but I think it might have been $5.99.
I was so happy to find these clothes because I'm shopping for new clothes a trip to Poland and Holland in the spring. The jeans and white sweater will be perfect.

I finally got around to counting the watercolor paintings in the box I bought at the auctionhouse tag sale last weekend. There were:
2 pen sketches 4 oil paintings on masonite 41 watercolors that I will keep as is, alter for other crafts, or give to family members as gifts 58 watercolors to sell 1 sketchbook filled with pencil drawings
It was a fun few hours looking through and sorting them.

I usually only go thrifting when I run out of books to read..so I hit my favorite stores this week.
I saw 16 pieces of Termocrisa dishes (white milk glass with swirl edges and flowers) for $3.99. I so needed them! I'm so sick of hand washing the heavy stoneware we have that I packed it all up and told my family we are using these thin, light glass dishes for a while.
There was a little mug from Disney that looked like a flower pot with Alice in Wonderland theme for 99 cents. I bought it and will put dd's easter cash & a little candy in it. She LOVES A in WL stuff.
Today DH and I stopped at a garage sale. Nothing I wanted after a quick glance and the guy having the sale was drunk as a skunk before noon & still drinking!! Comically so!

At a local thrift shop, I found a stack of 4 salad plates, 4 saucers, and 4 teacups all taped together into one bundle, priced at $6.99 for all. The plates weren't backstamped on the bottom but they looked very familiar. Knockoff or the real deal? I looked closely at one of the teacups and counted the concentric rings: yep, 5 of them. Decided to take a chance even though it was a color that I wasn't personally aware of. It turned out that I got a partial set of Sage Fiestaware by Homer Laughlin for way less than I would have paid for a single plate. Real deal, just unmarked on the underside. Score.

While helping my mama clean out her closets and drawers, we ran across these. She had handed me a big pile of scarves saying, "I'll never wear these again. Add them to the donate pile." Ummm... two Hermes scarves? She got them years ago while traveling in Europe with my father. I had no idea she even had them. Those went home with me!

lots of cool finds on this thread nothing exciting at GW yesterday - I picked up some books for me for $5 (about 7 books) but that's it. I did see they had a quad stroller for sale - now that's quite the find for someone who needs a stroller for 4 but that someone isn't me.

After reading the decluttering thread and how people are donating some of their Christmas decorations I decided a trip to Goodwill and Salvation Army were in order.
Goodwill was first on my list. The shelves and racks were overflowing so it looks like lots of people are starting off the new year decluttering.
While I was walking past the jewelry case I spied a vintage pin and it called to me. It must have just been put out because I never see jewelry there that looks so expensive. I need to get out my magnifier because I don't see any markings with my naked eye. It is definitely high end costume jewelry. Super sweet deal for $1.
I also found a Johanna Basford Secret Garden coloring Book. It had two pages that someone started to color but that's fine by me. I can overlook that seeing how it retails for $15.95 and it was only $1.
Heading over to Salvation Army I found a small Pyrex casserole dish. It's the pattern that has the little people on it. I also spied in the case near the register three vintage dog figurines. I asked to see them. There were no price tags on them so I figured they could be pricey because they were in the case. Happily they weren't. They were .99 cents each. They are just the kind of thing that my sister likes so I bought them for her.
At SA they had a sign up saying that everything is 1/2 off on MLK Day so if you have one near you it might be worth stopping by.
Glad to hear that people have found some nice deals this week.

I went to Old Navy yesterday hoping to find clearance deals for my son. I halfheartedly decided to check out the womens section but it's usually the extra small and extra small petite they have in abundance. I was shocked I found shirts in XL and there was a decent amount. I bought 2 shirts and 1 jacket for my son. I bought 1 tank top, 1 long sleeve tunic tee, 2 t-shirts, and 1 blouse for $33.00. The shirts I found were $1.00-$2.00! My son's were more.

At Salvation Army, where I haven't been in many months, the large, yellow Pyrex mixing bowl; pink, Pyrex divided casserole/vege dish; and small Pyrex loaf pan with green flower pattern. oooh - very nice!
