rocky had to stay behind while I traveled to my sons wedding. As we got off the plane today, I had a message from the place he was being boarded that there was a fight between him and another dog and both dogs had to be taken to the vet. He has a bite wound to his neck that required a drain. His left foot was severely injured and required a minor surgical intervention but lots of bleeding. He has a couple smaller bite marks on his back and of course his neck has a spot because his big scar there likes to open up because the sun is up. He is home on my bed very sedated. And now I'm starting to get mad. I was so busy finding him and getting treated that I didn't have time to think. I boarded him at this place in May without incident. Am I over reacting to wonder how long this fight went on before being broken up? Does it sound like it was a short thing? They are paying for all the bills from the vet and have bent over backwards to help me. The other dog had injuries but not as bad. He is the first dog I have ever boarded and this is only our second time. He's my baby and he had such a rough time before we found him.. he wasn't supposed to be hurt anymore under my care. I'm just a touch sad and a whole lot mad. Good thing all I can do is snuggle with him in bed

In the span of several seconds of a dogfight, they can inflict a lot of damage on each other

I'd be pretty irritated as well. I'm really leery of facilities that mix "unrelated" dogs. The kennel that we used does not. Emma has three 15 minute one on one play times with a human, but no interaction with other dogs. We chose this because she is a therapy dog who needs to be relaxed around other dogs and we just couldn't take the chance that another dog would take umbrage with her.
But a dog fight can quickly escalate. I've seen plenty of fights that are just show, but others that are for real (our first dog was part chow and NOT friendly with others!)
I hope your poor baby feels better soon. How scary!

I am sorry. I understand how upset you must be, I would be too. Hopefully he will heal fast and be back to his normal self before long. I haven't boarded mine since I read that a lot of kennels leave the pets unattended all night long. There was a fire during the night, at a kennel a few years ago and no one was there. Dogs died. It really ticked me off.

I have 3 male Dachshunds that use to fight when they were younger. We had a dog fight that happened at my feet while I was cooking dinner, that lasted 10 seconds and 125 stitches between the 3 dogs. It happened so quickly with no warning. I understand being upset but from my vast experiences with pissy male dogs with big dog complex, fights can happen in an instant and only a few seconds can cause traumatic injuries.
Hope your pup heals quickly! Watch the drain for a foul smell just in case of infection

Poor boy! I would be mad too, but I've seen my own dogs get into a tangle before so I know how quickly things can escalate. Given his history, I think if I ever needed to board the dog again I would pick a place where he wouldn't be in contact with other dogs. I hope he heals up quickly and doesn't have any long standing emotional scars from his run-in.

But he wasn't actually under your care at the time so try not to feel bad. Having said that, I was be mad as well. We had a dog fight that happened at my feet while I was cooking dinner, that lasted 10 seconds and 125 stitches between the 3 dogs. Bloody hell! How awful!

I am so sorry your poor boy is hurt.
As said by a previous poster, dog fights can escalate very quickly.
Also, you never know who instigated. We had a former shelter dog who in general got along with other dogs no problem, with one exception. Every once in a while we would run into a guy and his chocolate lab at the dog park. For some reason, our dog and this one took an instant dislike to each other, and whenever they saw each other would begin posturing and try to get at each other. We talked to the other owner and his evaluation was the same - his dog in general had no problem at the park, except with our dog. Other park patrons backed this up.

Did they tell you how long the fight went on? Over Christmas, my parent's dog, my brother's dogs, and my dogs spent a lot of time together. This is 3 big dogs, 1 medium dog, and 1 little dog. One evening, the three big dogs got upset over something and fur went flying. It was resolved in seconds, but my pup walked away limping. By the time any of the 4 adults 10 feet away got to the dogs, it was over.

I'm so sorry. My heart breaks for you and Rocky. I'm sure he feels 100x better already, just having his mama home to snuggle. I would be beside myself if that happened to one of my fur babies. Hugs to you both.

i would be upset that my dog was in with another dog which created the opportunity for the fight. did you know ahead of time that this was how it would be? the few times we've boarded, we have requested that our dogs not be put into any sort of community area where dogs are off-leash and interacting. even friendly dogs can start a fight, and it goes really fast from there.

They are not saying much about the fight other than it was two dogs, both had injuries and that they stepped in and stopped it. But actual details are very difficult to get. This place is a boarding facility that also has a daycare area, one for small dogs and one for larger dogs. They are supposed to be supervised if playing in the daycare areas. They have been posting pictures all weekend and it looked like he was having a blast. He had stayed there in May as well and there were no incidents noted. Who knows what caused the fight, and per other pea responses, its possible they were on top of it or it would have been much worse. He is up this morning, much more alert. He is hobbling on his foot and I see a long day of me just sitting around with him. He gets super anxious if I leave his eyesight and he is supposed to be kept quiet for the next few days. trying to keep the drain covered is another story. We tried a t-shirt but the drain is too high up. You can see in the pictures he has a bandana but it also keeps moving around. So todays goal is find something that will do the job Drain comes out Friday hopefully. on antibiotics and pain meds so that means he gets peanut butter and he is happy about that.

Oh dear, I am SO sorry, I would be upset but I also understand how quickly it can happen also. And his leg looks like my boy. He has the same color bandage right now. He has been in a cast since the beginning of October when his big brother stepped on his foot. He has weekly cast changes. Ugh! Praying your guy heals quickly!

Hope he feels better soon and heals quickly!
