Okay, so I have tested all 3 printers for everyone. I think I will use the PM400 and the Selphy. I will probably give the Charm to Erin since she prints photos a lot on this thing. She uses it more than I do. LOL! Anyway, here is what I did and what I discovered: 1. These images were not edited. I just added text to help people that look at the photo. 2. The image was printed on Epson Matte paper for the Charm and the PM400 prints. 3. The image was printed on Canon glossy paper for the Selphy print. 4. I always felt the Charm printed dark and would be frustrated editing photos. You can see how much darker that print is from the rest. 5. The PM400 prints a bit lighter so I won't need to edit the lighting in photos. YES! 6. The Selphy the color is not as rich as you can see but still not bad. 7. I used the PL app to print these two photos on one 4x6 sheet. So, here is the comparison. What do you think?

I use the selphy w/bumped up brightness (on the printer itself) and it helps.

So the brown collie's true color is the Epson PM400? (Beautiful dogs, BTW).
Where do you find Epson Matte paper? I can never find it, so I use Epson semi-gloss with my Epson PM400. I would love to use Matte paper.

I like the Epson Pm, the Selphy color on here looks very cyan. The Charm looks like it has more contrast, the Epson is like baby bear, just right. =)

I have read and heard nothing but terrific reviews on the Epson PM 400! Every time there is a thread posted (there was one just a couple weeks ago) it makes me want to go buy one immediately lol!

I use my selphy connected to my computer and I downloaded an ICC profile for it that lets me print better pics. That said, when my current stash of ink/paper is gone I might buy myself the PM 400 if I can make sure it will work fine even if only used a couple times a year.

I had an Epson PM many years ago and if you didn't print all the time, the heads clogged and it used up a bunch of ink getting set back up. Drove me nuts, as it's not cheap for those pacakages. I never have an issue with the Selphy, even after several months. Does anyone have more feedback on this issue? Tips, tricks?

I wanted to add that I received the Epson Semi-glossy paper in the mail today. I just tried it out, and it is extremely similar to the matte paper. Since it is hard to find the Epson Matte paper (unless you buy it with the Charm ink cartridge), I will use the Semi-gloss from now on. Really nice paper. Also on the issue of the Epson ink head clogging if you don't print for a while, I have heard from many people that have had this printer for 4-6 months, and they have not had any issues even with letting it sit for a month or more without printing. (Sorry for the long run-on sentence. ) So excited that it doesn't seem to be an issue anymore!

I bought the PM 400 about a year ago and I am definitely one of those people who don't print often. In fact, I printed a couple of photos just after Christmas after not printing for probably... 2 months. It worked perfectly. I have never had clogging issues! I almost didn't buy the printer for exactly the same reason. Thankfully enough research convinced me to go ahead and buy it!
As for matte paper, I bought mine from Epson directly online when it went on sale for 50% off, but I can only find it in 8x10 so I cut it down. I actually, like this option because I can cut it to either 4x6 or 5x7. And this brings me to another deciding factor in choosing the PM 400-it prints 5x7!!!

If I printed every month or two months I would consider that (for me) to be frequent printing. The truth is, I mainly print once a year for our annual christmas card pics and occasionally a print or two during the other parts of the year. I have had bad luck with the local places and the online places changing the color of my pictures even when I check the box to not change it, or cropping pictures weird, so I prefer to print at home. Plus I can print one, make adjustments, etc until it's to my liking. Also the fact that we live far from town so if I need a quick print, it's really not worth driving 30 minutes just for that. But I need to make sure i can go many months without printing, not just a month or two. Someday I plan to scrapbook again and I want to be able to print out pictures then too.

I am waiting until I use up all my Selphy supplies before getting the 400. Good to hear that the clogging problem seems to be fixed.

The Selphy won't ever give you problems no matter how infrequently you print because it's a dyesub printer, not an inkjet. That's exactly why I chose it, because I (maybe) print photos myself once or twice a year at the most. When I was using an Epson for printing photos, my favorite paper was their luster finish paper. It's hard to find in stores, but you can get it at www.atlex.com pretty reasonably. They also sell ink cartridges and lots of other paper too.

I use the selphy w/bumped up brightness (on the printer itself) and it helps. Same here. The PM400 is frustratingly not sold in Europe so I've had to learn to be happy with the Selphy. It was a very quick learning curve though. I edit and, as @zingermack put it, bump up the brightness through Photoshop. This does work. It's not like the Selphy can't print brighter colours (you've just got to explicitly ask for it ).

Interesting comparison! I've been very happy with my Selphy because it's a dye sub printer, I'm not interested in an ink jet photo printer for many reasons. Especially Epson brand because I had horrible issues in the past with the print heads clogging and it taking almost full cartridges of ink when running head cleaning cycles. Just way, way too expensive even though the print quality was better. I find with my Selphy if I bump up the saturation 2 ticks and add one tick of red in the print settings dialogue box the prints come out very true to life.

I will try bumping up the saturation and adding a bit of red. Thanks! I want to be able to still use it.

What if you took out the PictureMate ink cartridges and only put them in and turned on the printer when you were ready to print? Then the print heads can't be clogged since they have no ink when the printer is not being used.
