I've needed to do a backup of the pictures on the hard drive of my old computer. I have most of them saved to the external drive, just a few sets from the last year or so. I've been putting it off. Finally was going to do it last night and the coputer won't work. I'm taking it to a repair place to see if they can recover from the hard drive. Cross my fingers and pray.
Don't put it off anymore.

You are so right. My computer has crashed a number of times over the years and I have been fortunate not to have lost any photos. I know I am on borrowed time.
I keep putting off having my husband teach me how to back up. I really need to get on that.
Keeping my fingers crossed you can find all your pics!

Good luck.
I know I've had good luck with a hard drive being recovered after computer failure twice.
Maybe in the future you might want to upload pics to a place like Snapfish, just to have them somewhere that isn't with you. Just in case. That's what I do, anyway.

Oh no! Hope you can recover them. I agree about backing them up somewhere on line as well as on an EHD. I have mine on Dropbox.

Good luck! I just had to do that myself this spring. Fortunately they were able to get everything off for me.

UPDATE: I do have a lot of it already on an external drive. Just a few single pics and others that I downloaded to the old computer over the last year or so. I took it to Staples and then to Best Buy and they said the hard drive was broken. The only way to recover is to send in and have Seagate recover it at a cost of about $1500. I don't think there is anything on there that is worth that.

Thank you for the reminder. I have CrashPlan on my laptop. I love that it automatically backs up, don't even have to think about it. However, I have some older pictures on external hard drives that need to be backed up.

Thanks for the reminder! I back up my pics on my ext.hard drive but not on a regular basis. Plus I do upload a lot to either shutterfly or Costco.
I had a corrupted memory card recently. I could not find some photos on my computer, so I checked my cards. There they were. I had to buy an external card reader to get them. It was only $13 so not too bad. They would not transfer through my DSLR?
It can be a bummer to know pics are there but not access them!

Rosered, I learned my lesson the same way a few years ago. Thankfully, my computer guy was able to retrieve everything from the HD and backed it all up onto an external drive - only charged me about $50 because I got the EHD from him too. I've done regular backups ever since.

Just bumping this as a psa. I unfortunately just lost every picture from a 2 year span plus ALL videos from maybe 10 years? And this kinda happened during a backup! I was backing up to a new hard drive when my computer started acting up so I put the hard drive I was copying to back in its box and away in a cupboard thinking it would be fine till I got back to it. Fast forward a few months - I plugged it in and… insert many tears and swear words! It’s dead. I have exhausted all I know how to do, my husbands IT people from work tried and now I am taking it to a recovery team on Tuesday. I am hoping against hope they can retrieve the pics. 😩 I am constantly backing up so I never thought this would happen. Luckily all the other years were backed twice. And remember this drive was brand new! Ugh. Oh and I do run backblaze on my pc but the hard drive was not connected for several months and they only keep your files for 30 days I believe.

Oh no, sunny1016 ! Very sorry you've possibly lost some photos forever. A scrapbooker's nightmare. Backup AND use a cloud, folks. Two clouds even. Amazon Prime members can backup to Prime Photos as well for free. Diversify your backups and lessen the chance of losing your precious memories.

I'm sorry. That sucks. I lost a bunch of things a while back so I started using carbonite. Then I had some trouble with it so I added backblaze. Now I get two backups. BUT at some point I lost some files and didn't know, and by the time I realized it 30 days had gone by so they had also been deleted from my cloud backups. Luckily it was just music files and for most of it, I still have the cds. Just lost a few I bought online. In addition to all this, I also upload all of my digital and scanned photos to smugmug. Can never be too careful. lol

I set a recurring reminder in my phone. Every month on the 16th I get a little reminder to back up that won't stop bugging me until I actually do it. I agree with sleepingbooty - diversify! Print the best photos, email them to your loved ones, put them online - those are all backups too. And save to cloud and external drives regularly. sunny1016 I hope you have some luck retrieving your lost pix and videos.

Oh no. Hope you can get things back. I must admit I’m a bit paranoid about multiple backups - I back up locally to a time capsule with time machine plus upload photos to Dropbox and Flickr and I have Backblaze as well.

I got my son a new phone and I took his. He had a bazillion pics on his phone that he thought he saved to the cloud. He wiped everyone of them off the phone and found out they weren't saved at all. He said he had wiped out years of his life.
I still print most everything and it's also over on Walmart.com where I have placed print orders. I print pretty quickly. I already have the photos I took yesterday.

That’s what I am working on now. Printing as much as I can. That’s what I like about PL. Even if I lose my photos from the year I know that I have at least some from each event. I think that might be the worst part of it. My pictures were like my memory. I feel like I have amnesia from those years now!
