Calvinball is a month long challenge/competition hosted at Get It Scrapped. It's named after the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip where they played a game where rules were constantly being added. The premise for scrappy Calvinball is that you get one point for every layout. Then people suggest rules like 1 point for using purple, or for using a pic that is over 2 years old, or doing a Christmas page. You can end up earning a lot of points for one layout. There's no actual prize other than bragging rights but it's a lot of fun and very inspiring. You don't have to be a member of Get It Scrapped. You just sign up for their forum and join the fun.

It sounds so fun! Do you have to share your layouts online or can you keep track on your own? They have a gallery, but I don't think you have to share. It's pretty much the honor system for points. There were also community points for commenting on layouts and publicity points for sharing on social media. Save

I would really like to do Calvinball but I don't do layouts... Would a PL card count as a sort of mini spread?

I would really like to do Calvinball but I don't do layouts... Would a PL card count as a sort of mini spread? The thing is you can suggest a rule--and usually it gets added--to give a point for a particular project. I think last year they gave a full point for finishing one sb page, but then 1/2 point for a page in a mini album. I think a full PL page would count the same as a traditional page. As justjac said, the rules are made up as we go along.

I went over to Debbie's site to have a look. It looks fun! And it looks like it's in March this year.
Some questions: 1. What do you do to get ready in terms of preparing kits, supplies, photos, etc? 2. Are there basic rules set out at the beginning, or are all the rules made up as you go? 3. How do you sign up? Will there be a thread on Debbie's site?
I think it's a super fun idea and will try to play along!

Would love it if there was a parallel thread happening over here I don't want to register for another board LOL.

You just need to add yourself to the thread when it gets posted, it's not really a formal registration. There are basic rules set up at the beginning, and there is a person who will keep track of and post everyone's totals (on a weekly basis). As far as preparing, pretty individual I think, depends on how you normally scrap if you like working with kits, I would put some kits together. Be sure to have plenty of your basics on hand especially adhesive. Have lots of photos on hand as well. Personally, I tend to get my photos matched up with the papers I want to use, possibly some embellishments if I have certain ones that I know I want to put with a particular photo. I tend to theme scrap so that happens frequently with me. Hope to see you there, it was a blast last year.

I tried to get one started here last year because I would like to do more than one of these a year but I didn't receive enough interest. I would be willing to do the organization portion of a similar event if enough people were on board to make it a fun event.

maribeth, when would you want to do it? carolynhasacat, I've seen Nicole Jones 911 youtube videos where she gets kits ready. She made a ton of kits! She said it made it so much easier to just scrap and not waste time looking for things that might work. She had leftover kits and continued to use them after Calvinball.

maribeth , when would you want to do it? LisaDV is planning to host a Christmas in July activity, I think. I would be open to anything any month besides March or when she is doing that.

Yep, other than signing up and if you are tracking points, you have to get those in on the dedicated thread each week. Maribeth's advice about having lots of basics is extremely important. Personally, I do page kits with just photos, journaling, and papers for my regular life. So I'm hoping to spend a good chunk of time in February getting more photos printed and prepping lots of kits. I always have some digital things to work on too for when I don't feel like cleaning my desk off and it's too messy to work on, or I'm on the go. Hope you play along!

@elsabell - June or August would be the best for me (since July is already taken) grammadee - What is LisaDV planning for Christmas in July??? Christmas in July is for all kinds of crafting! Not just scrapbooking, but it's time to really concentrate on getting those cards, pages, gift tags, gifts made, maybe home decor items fixed up or made and avoiding the crazy time of November/December and the burnout of not wanting to do anything Christmas in January. DD & I are also going to test out holiday yummies. She's been gluten, dairy, egg, artificial dye, and most preservatives free for 2 years, and we haven't tested and developed are recipes yet. We'd share what we accomplished and rejoice for each other. Or we could lament over a disaster and be comforted.

If we're doing a Calvinball type event here, I'd like to nix the months of March, July, September, November and December. All other months are good! Also, I'm always up for an event in November, but only a weekend or week event and only during the first week.

At the rate I am [not] getting christmas scrapped this year, I may not even NEED to put my Christmas pretties away! Just slide right into making cards in July... and that would leave OCTOBER for maribeth 's Calvinball spinoff...

Just slide right into making cards in July... and that would leave OCTOBER for maribeth 's Calvinball spinoff Just put it away and bring it back out in July. I put Christmas all away! But I have it easily accessible for July! Of course, I'm doing all my old Christmas photos digitally and I did 2 of those today while sitting in the waiting area while DH was at the doctor. So it's not all away.

I'm in for Christmas in July! I didn't finish nearly as much as I thought I would, and just packed it all up on Jan. 2. I'll be watching for Calvinball, too.
