They now own Core'dinations and it's bye bye Tim Holtz American Crafts has announced that it has acquired cardstock company Core’dinations, which was previously owned by Darice. In February 2016, Darice became a subsidiary of Michaels Stores when Darice’s parent company Lamrite West was purchased by Michaels. American Crafts already has multiple cardstock brands under its umbrella, having acquired Bazzill in 2014 and also selling cardstock under its American Crafts brand. The company will continue to use the Core’dinations brand after the acquisition but as part of the transition many of the brand’s products have been discontinued, including the Tim Holtz branded Kraft Core line. But tim holtz was previewing a craft core line under a different brand. Figured that was his answer to the loss of core donations.

Hmmm. Not sure that I care much about this acquisition, although I bought a minimal amount of the non-Tim Core'dinations. I make an effort to support his brand because he is so talented and seems to be a very genuine person. I'll be keeping an eye out to see if he continues with another manufacturer for card stock. Hopefully!

One day, all we will have is AC stuff. This is what I worry about. Monopolies of any kind are never good for the consumer.

I liked the colors for matching G45 and TH papers, but that's about it. Tim has it covered with paper now manufactured through Ideology.

Does anyone else remember when AC was just a ribbon company?

One day, all we will have is AC stuff. This is what I worry about. Monopolies of any kind are never good for the consumer. I swear, AC is like the hungriest beast scrapbooking ever saw... Scrapzilla munching everything up while it stamps out individuality in its destructive path. If you take away the brush fonts, I often can't figure out whether it's Amy Tangerine or Dear Lizzy, etc. All the elements and colour schemes start running into each other, everything has a gold foil specialty pack, etc. Also, I crack up at some of the online scrapbook stores in my country: they end up getting confused by how big the AC umbrella spands these days. Some collections get lost and separated underneath the designer's name and the American Crafts tag. (especially those pesky thickers ) I'm a little surprised they bought Core'dinations. Was it that big a competitor? Will they really win a lot from owning it? I might be missing the full picture here as I'm not based in the US and sometimes don't realise a trend or company is actually quite influential over there where the majority of the SB money is spent.

I know very little about business And I figure monopolies are bad for price and selection BUT I am glad there is a company that is still succeeding in the scrapbooking world/market. It seems like our hobby peaked and faded, and I feel more secure thinking that AC might weather the lower overall market and keep making products for me that I like (too much pink, I agree, but overall I'm still OK with some of their selection. We have thickers. Ephemera packs. puffy stickers. albums and page protectors. cardstock...) I am very sad to see some of the more unique brands/lines go away through the years but I think it's reflective of the market. So when AC grabs a brand (like crate paper, or wrmk) I'd prefer to see those companies still be represented than disappear like BG did!

Core'dinations is not a company I really care a lot about either, but sometimes I need a very specific colored cardstock, like when I cut out some Christmas tree branches last year. Michael's Bazzill selection is limited. and it is hard to shop online for colors. Joanns has quite a bit of Core'dinations that I can look at in person. I like that I still have that option.

I've never bought or used any Core'dinations and I have mixed feelings about AC buying up everything. On one hand there are some companies that wouldn't be around at all if AC didn't buy them but on the other hand their design creep makes it so those brands are seemingly not in existence anymore anyway.

One day, all we will have is AC stuff. Sure seems like it I don't use the newest brand they bought, but I also no longer use Bazzill. It doesn't feel the same weight and I hate having to cut the strip off the bottom.

Although I haven't purchased recently, I have an inventory of Core'dinations cardstock. I like the texture & contrasting core color & am disappointed another company will be swept under the AC umbrella (& inevitably stripped of its individuality/creativity never to be recognized again like all the acquired companies before it). It doesn't feel the same weight and I hate having to cut the strip off the bottom. Like you, I'm disappointed that AC continues to inch closer to monopolizing the industry. I cannot remember the last time I purchased from any AC company (& likely wouldn't be able to recall which one, since they all look alike!) & wish new manufacturers would invest to provide more creative options for consumers. For cardstock, check out MME My Colors (see this old thread).

I might be missing the full picture here as I'm not based in the US and sometimes don't realise a trend or company is actually quite influential over there where the majority of the SB money is spent. I think Core'dinations is a big seller at the big box stores. It's the main brand of cardstock that JoAnn sells at least. They sell the 8.5x11 paper packs there for around $2 when they're on sale, which is the same as the Recollections paper packs. I wouldn't be surprised if the Recollections ones were manufactured by Core'dinations (although I don't know for sure). So from a volume perspective I'm sure that is a big deal.
