Any recommendations for a good book on study skills for a struggling student? DD does have ADHD and also has an IEP. She gets extra help but is still seriously struggling. There are other reasons but I don't want to get into that right now but I think she just doesn't know how to study. I try to tell her but she doesn't seem to want to listen to me. And I don't think the school has covered this much at all.
She's going into 9th grade. I am checking Amazon reviews etc.

Does your high school offer a study skills class? If it offered encourage her to take it.
Our high school makes all freshman take study skills and most sophomores as well.

I am in the same boat as you. Son going into the 9th grade and struggles with this. Also has ADHD and has an IEP as of recently. His school offers a study skills class for kids like himself and I am really hoping this helps.
One thing I might recommend is for her to make flash cards to help study for tests. I also am going to make him more accountable for his grades.
I am looking forward to reading the responses.

Does your school offer a study support for students with IEPs? It is a nice alternative for a regular study hall and there is always an instructional assistant and sometimes a teacher in the room to help with studying and homework help. I am an IA and I usually help the kids in my support to make outlines, flashcards, etc. Last year, I had a group of seniors and we played games and did daily reviews to get them through MacBeth and their research papers.

It is free. Totally helped my dd learn how to study because once you put your i formation I there are a variety of ways to study the same information.

Oh my gosh, I think I love you. I have never heard of quizlet before, but looked at it quickly after your post. This is JUST THE THING my new high school freshman dd needs. Thank you so much for sharing! She is on the other computer now creating an account and getting ready to put her Spanish flashcards in. It is perfect timing too as school just started yesterday. |

I took Spanish at a junior college not too long ago. Quizlet saved me in that class! I've since helped 17 yo DD use it for her classes and used it some to help 14 yo DS study for a spelling bee. Love that site.

Glad I could help. One thing my dd does is make her cards public. She titles the set with the course name and teacher name. That way a friend can use them too by searching. They take turns making the cards for the class. Some of her teachers even put study materials on there themselves. I like that that she can study on her phone. No excuses. |

Quizlet rocks. Purely and simply. lol. I use it ALL the time. If you type in a question from your curriculum, the query will likely lead you right to someone else's file they have created. Easy peasy. Love their online tests/quizzes/flash cards.

With her IEP she is in co taught classes. They also have SRT (homeroom) every other day for 1.5 hours (block scheduling) and during that time she can visit her caseload teacher for extra help, same as in middle school. In middle school they did sometimes help with things like flashcards etc but usually they just had time to get her started and she'd do it on her own but it never seemed to help much. Part of it is that she's so darn distractible but I need to work on that more with her and keeping the house/her room distraction free.
I ordered some books through work (work in a library) and will check out Quizlet.
