I didn't actually know it wasn't, until Trump came along and kept telling us over and over and over again that it wasn't.

Of course we have problems ... always have had, always will have. But we're still a great nation and I wouldn't trade today's problems for those of 50 years ago or whenever it is he's thinking we "used to be" great.

I think America is much more than "great". In the past several years, we have been economically sound, embracing of diversity, safe and protected from harm, etc. That's pretty damn phenomenal to me!

Yep, when you have a Cheeto in Chief telling you that it is Armageddon and creating the yuuuuge divide amongst people your hope would be it can only get better. Especially since their choice was the PE with the lowest approval ratings ever, and President Obama was the or one of the highest favored presidents ever!

Great if you mean:
Divided Hated by other countries Paying a lot more for the goods we need and want Having god crammed down our children's throats at school Bad choices for cabinet positions If you like exclusion If you don't care about the environment If you don't care about the rights of others who are not just like you... If your not LGBTQ....
Great! Really really great things to come 🙄

It's going to be a long fight, though.

OH, what a catch-22!
You can either agree with the statement that America is great (and go against trump's assertion)
OR you can argue with all your heart about why America totally sucks - which puts you in the whole anti-American, blame America first group.
What a dilemma. Oppose trump on this, or actively hate on your country. Tough decision for the ones who love plastering the flag everywhere and have always been the ones to lead the "America is the best country in the world" chants.

If Obama had ran with that campaign slogan 8 years ago, he would have been eviscerated

But I distinctly remember Michelle Obama saying, to Americans and other countries, how she was ashamed to be an American. So it's okay for the FLOTUS to say that, but not okay for a presidential nominee to want America to be great like she has been in the past? I remember the Cold War and how great it was when the Berlin Wall came down. When the USSR started making changes and breaking up, allowing so many of those small countries to have autonomy. I was a teen during the Reagan years, when the President of the US was considered the most powerful man in the world. When people from all over the world knew that America was the land of opportunity and hope. America is a wonderful country ("make America great again" doesn't mean it's a lousy country or "totally sucks"), but it certainly has changed. In some ways for the better, in some ways not so much.

If "make America great again" does not mean that right now/the years since Reagan have sucked, then Michelle Obama saying "for the first time I'm proud of my country" does not mean she was ashamed of America. Her statement was not viewed as ok by many, she was raked over the coals for saying it. By people who have gone on to call her "an ape in heels" and spent 8 years insisting her husband wasn't even a citizen.

Michelle Obama made a comment and then spent the next 8 years as a positive ambassador to and for this country. trump has made a campaign by saying this country is broken and only he can fix it. There is a difference. We do not live in Shangri-La but in reality. There will always will be problems. But the key is to evolve and move forward as we address the problems and not slide backwards to what can never be again and pretend some problems don't exist. If trump wants to be the most powerful man/president of the most powerful country in the world he certainly blew it today when he pulled out of the TPP. By doing so he gave China a gift.

There are a lot of things I am ashamed about America.
I am ashamed we elected DT.
I am ashamed that 152 years after slavery ended, black Americans are not treated as equals.
I am ashamed that in America women doing the same work as men earn less money.
I am ashamed that less than 60% of eligible voters, voted in the last election.
But,
I am proud to be an American.
I am proud to live in a country that has a Bill of Rights.
I am proud to live in a country where anyone can be elected President, as we have proven this year.
I am proud to live in a country where millions of people can gather to protest the election of DT.
You can be a proud American and be ashamed of some of the things our nations does. The two are not mutually exclusive.
Is America great?
Yes for some things and some people. I won't rest until it is equally great for every American Citizen.

My husband, a conservative Republican who immigrated from Europe as an adult, tells people who make this comment that they really should spend some time living in another country to learn some appreciation for just how great our country is, despite all of our problems.

I love you guys, but I have to say...America is/was not great. It was definitely better during the past 8 years, but I cannot say it was ever "Great!" To say that it will be great AGAIN? I have to ask...when was it ever great? The history of this country is almost abysmal. Too much bloodshed. Too much poverty. Even now, when there is much wealth, there are still too many that are homeless. Yes, we are definitely loads better than some other countries, but there are countries who are loads better than the US. If you are in the top 10%, I'm sure to you this country was great. Until minorities, LGBTQ, females started gaining more ground in equality. Maybe to the top echelon of this country, that meant we were spiraling downward. So to be great again, we must beat those people back into submission! ~Lauren~...you say under Trump we will be great again. You are a lawyer. Are you being paid equally with a man who has the same number of years, the same experience as you? If you are, then great! That's how it should be! Under Trump's administration though, what if your employer came to you and said you are being paid too much? That the men in your firm should be making more money, even if they have less years than you. Is that ok with you? If it is, fine. But it's not ok with me, nor with legions of other women. To us, the pay inequality is definitely NOT GREAT! Never was. So tell me please. What would you consider great? I'm really curious.

Jigglypuff, Trump has had women in key positions in his business and in his campaign. I don't believe your statement about it being ok to pay women less is accurate. I think this is baseless fear that has been used as propaganda by his opponents.

Every time I see Cheeto in Chief or Tiny hands comments. They make me think of Skybar/pea and the comments she always made about President Obama, and calling him DBO, etc, and the responses on the left of "respecting the office, even if you don't respect the man", and "you're horrible for calling the president names" (This was even when she just used his full name). Funny how the more things change, the more they stay the same. Looks like we are finding out everyone here who will be this administration's skybar.
