I did not like this movie. I didn't hate it, but I would never choose to watch it again, nor did its tale stay with me and make me think; both of which I think are deciding factors in whether or not a movie is great (for me, at least). I just truly think it's an epic tale of how much Hollywood loves itself. Seriously, what am I missing? UPDATE: HOLY MOLY!!!! Look what the Washington Post wrote today. I love that Emily Yahr!

There was a skit on SNL this past Saturday talking about this LOL!

I didn't care for the first half. I remember thinking wtf am I watching?!? Lol. And feeling bad because I had dragged a friend into seeing it.
But the ending made the whole movie make sense. So I made my peace with the first half. Lol.

my friend who LOVES musical theatre and was primed to love this movie was underwhelmed also. I am not a big fan of musical theatre, so figured I'd wait for it to be on demand

I thought it was ok, but didn't live up to all the hype. Both Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea have really stuck with me.

I didn't mind the ending, but I totally agree with Aziz Ansari!! TFS that video!
There are just so many great movies out there, why on EARTH is this put up in that category? WHY WHY WHY?!?!?

I really enjoyed it, but it didn't have the emotional depth of a movie like Moonlight. (I really liked Manchester by the Sea too, although my feelings are somewhat soured by the sexual harassment charges against Casey Affleck).
I did like that it was more melancholy and didn't for easy endings.

I haven't seen La La Land yet, but I immediately thought of the SNL skit when I read what you wrote.

I thought it was cute but certainly not Academy Award winning.

Love Ryan Gossling, love Emma Stone...not a big fan of the movie. For me, it was just "ok".

Now see - I loved it.... except for the ending. I do NOT go to musicals for that kind of an ending! I don't know if I should say more, as it'd be a big spoiler.

I LOVED it including the ending. I get that everyone one has different opinions on what appeals to them. It stayed with me for days and I couldn't get City of Stars out of my head. Can't wait to see it again.

My DD and I couldnt wait to see this. All the commercials had us convinced we would love it. Her DH didn't want to go to what he thought would be a chic flick. Half-way through we both realized we should have gone to the basketball game with him. Just wasn't our cup of tea.

I think often great movies are controversial. They are not universally loved.
I think this movies challenges us in a way that is bound to run some people off.
I loved it.
I loved the music, the dancing, the singing.
I loved the cinematography.
I don't think it will win best picture but I expect it will get quite a few Oscars.

I thought it was an entertaining movie. Nothing earth shattering, and certainly not oscar worthy.

Because I really need to talk/vent about the ending & I don't know how to do it in code.

There's no controversy, except as to whether people like it or not. And how on earth does it challenge us? It's a girl meets boy, both fall in love, girl finds fame in one direction, boy finds fame in another, they leave each other and within about 1 year or so, girl finds another dude, they fall in love, get married, have a kid who looks to be about 2-3yo, 5 years after she left 1st dude. Great song, though.

Great song, though. It is controversial because people love it or hate it. There seems to be no in-between. It challenges us to pay attention. It is not your typical movie, it is heavy on dialogue, it is light and airy, it is just different. It is not your typical Rom Com--- boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl....the dual ending is unique and bittersweet. It is more old Hollywood, you could imagine Cary Grant playing the lead. I think in world of RomCom's it is unique and beautiful. It will probably loose Best Film to a heavier more "important" movie

Nobody should expect that this is a musical, let alone musical theatre. It's a movie with music and some dancing. Actually, the opening "number" sets it up to be something it isn't.
I liked it a lot. My 20-something kids LOVED it. LOVED. It SPOKE to them. Heh.
The ending was perfect. You can't have it all, even in Hollywood.
Couldn't get at least two of those songs out of my head for days.
This is is just the costumer in me, but I loved the costume color themes.

Ongoing movie thread Or here since she put spoilers in the thread. Or click on the little icon that shows a smilie face with a finger against her lips and insert a spoiler. At first the ending upset me but after thinking about it I realized it was more real-to-life. Better than the ending of West Side Story. I saw that in the early 60's two nights in a row and sobbed both nights.

ktdoesntscrap - was it an alternate ending or a dream sequence? See, if it was an alternate ending & I can believe they did make it work, I love it. If it was a dream sequence and they don't end up together, it ruined the whole damn movie for me. AmeliaBloomer - There's no reason they couldn't have made it work! They belonged together. I reject the notion that you can't have it all in some fashion. They belonged together, dang it!

I had a hard time hearing the words to the music. I thought it was just me, but my adult kids said they had a hard time. Then I asked my son's friend, who saw it in a different theater, and he said he had a hard time also. It was disappointing.

Her play was packed and got a standing ovation? And then the typical Hollywood fanfare at the end? They were trying to show us how "Hollywood" we've all been programmed...and how incorrect our memories are. Nobody always lucks into success....the stars rarely all align. In reality, the play was a flop but she got an audition out of it. THAT'S life. They just want us to apply the vagaries of real life to the central relationship. And show us that, even after four minutes of regret-tinged, INCORRECT memories, these two still had pretty good lives. On on the other hand, you could go see it again, pretend the jazz club scene is the dream, watch the perfect re-telling and then dart out of the theatre after the fanfare. Win-win!

AmeliaBloomer - wow... actually, no, I didn't notice that. I noticed that in the alt-ending the play was a success, but I missed them kissing at their first meeting somehow. Ok, now I definitely do want to watch it again. So, maybe they weren't meant to be forever. Maybe they were just meant to be the transitional people that helped them get on the path to achieving their dreams. Hmm.

I think his whole role in her life was literally to get her to LA for that audition. Which he might not have done if he didn't feel so guilty for acting like a jerk. It wasn't the perfect relationship we'd like to think it was, but he made amends...and that sent her on her path. Mission accomplished. (Feel free to ask me make you feel better about any other movies. F'rinstance: Scarlet and Rhett? Match made in hell.)

I liked it but it wasn't enough of a musical for me..expected more music, I guess.
They seemed so happy in the alternative (fake) ending montage and in reality when they saw each other (at the end) seemed sad and nostalgic..plus it wasn't clear to me if he had ever found love and/or had a family. I'm still sad about it.

Major Vent...you've been warned.
I swing dance with my boyfriend. I have cute dresses and great 40's reproduction comfy dance shoes. I saw the La La Land poster. SHE HAS THE SHOES I'VE WANTED FOR OVER A YEAR! Ugh! They are perfect - breathable, stable heel, and cute. They are Aris Allen's and no one has had them in my size since forever.
I went to see the movie just for the shoes. I got my to see 'my' shoes and was disappointed there wasn't more dancing. I don't know if I can actually give the movie any credible review as I kept waiting for the next dance number. I even waited through the credits to see if there'd be a little more. I fully acknowledge how pathetic this sounds.
