Gosh I'm surprised that with the record breaking crowds attending you were even able to get tickets.

"There was pretty much no protesters either Thursday or Friday. A hand full really. " Another case of alternative facts. The protests on Friday were well documented. I figured posting I went to DC would yank your chain. lol. No "alternative facts" here. These are actual facts of what I saw and experienced. Sorry you can't understand the difference. Oh wait, I saw one sign on the parade route.

If the protests weren't occurring in the area of the city where she was, and she wasn't tuned into the news, she wouldn't be aware of them.
Then she shouldn't comment on something she doesn't know about. 200 arrests were made just blocks away from the police barriers of the mall. But along the parade route there was a large section with people peacefully holding protest signs that was clearly seen from the cameras taping the parade.

Gosh I'm surprised that with the record breaking crowds attending you were even able to get tickets. I don't think it was record breaking crowds. Still a lot of people were there. That's in part why I tried this time, because I figured there wouldn't be as many people trying for tickets. Plus who knows what my life will look like in 4-8 years and whether I'll be able to do anything or not. Live life *now*.

Here's what *I* saw. Might have been other stuff going on, but I didn't see it. I also don't rely on the media to tell me the truth because they don't. On Thursday if you had a sign, you were being interviewed. Media looking for protesters that just weren't there.

Awesome!! I love your painting and that you got to meet your congressman! Thanks for sharing! We were there (from Florida to DC) and it was a bucket list thing for me too. Though our experience with protesters was different than yours. We were at McPherson square and in the middle of the anarchists & pipeline protesters. I hope my children remember it their whole lives. We stayed with my parents in Richmond, VA a couple of nights and my dad shared his story of skipping school in 1953 to sneak off to Eisenhower's inauguration without letting anyone know...he's 76 yrs old and obviously remembers it vividly. That would have been neat to meet up. I don't know exactly where we were at on the route. I'm thinking about 2/3 through the route. We walked forever to get there! That's cool about Eisenhower. I bet back then there was almost no security. Crazy!

- There was pretty much no protesters either Thursday or Friday. A hand full really. Sounds like a great trip. So glad to hear this! Because according to my fb newsfeed (by people who weren't there), the place was just inundated with protesters behaving badly, treating inauguration guests rudely and being flat out disrespectful. To hear it from them, liberal interlopers were just out of control. Glad to hear from someone actually there that it wasn't like that. ETA: The portrait is great!

Loved hearing your experience and that you were able to check it off your bucket list! That's really cool that you had a great experience overall and the photo with the congressman! I hope he does contact you you will have to update us!! I love you went and were still good to go DC and or the inaguration. It is a big bucket list for DH and I too. We wanted to to do it the year of 9/11 but got sidetracked and stayed in CapeCod. How far out do you have to request them? I'm not sure how early you can request but I requested around the end of November and they let me know in early January that I had the tickets. You can request from your senator or congressman's office. Each will have between 175-300-ish tickets from what I've read. My congressman said he had 150 people visit his office so I'm going to guess he was on the low end. There were 3 other people from our town that I know of.

There WERE protesters, clearly. I just didn't see any rowdy ones. We left on Friday around 6 p.m. and I guess around that time downtown is when the rioting started. I didn't see any of that.

Everyone should try to go to an inauguration at some point in their lives. Glad you got to check it off your bucket list! Please come back to DC when all the crosswalks aren't blocked off! I said that about 10 times to my husband that I really want to go back now. I bet it's so much more fun in the spring/summer. I didn't get to see many monuments

Interesting account. TFS
For those bashing her--that is just uncalled for hateful behavior. She said she was giving HER experience....and in a crowd like that, if she was not near "the action" --then she didn't see it.
I read that protesters were kept 3-4 blocks away from the main crowd, so I can comprehend that a casual visitor might not even see it except for TV reports.

I should add, I amended my original post (while you were posting, looks like) to rephrase the part about it being "lies" and I think exaggeration is probably a better term. I also commented, in the edit, that the portrait was great! You are so talented.

Funny possible coincidence - the odds are good we knew that group of high school kids! Well, not them, but DH is friends with one of the school founders who accompanied them. I have to figure that there weren't too many small groups of high school kids from St. Louis there! That's crazy. I'm wondering if it was them. I didn't ask the name of the school but she said most of their high school went and it was a "very small high school in St. Louis" I wish I would have taken a picture with this girl. She was just the sweetest kid!

As someone opposed to President Trump I am GLAD to hear that freebird wasn't aware of the abundance of protesters because the reports I am hearing paint those opposed to President Trump in a very bad light. So it was nice to hear, "Hey, I wasn't bothered by any protesters". That tells me the ones in the area she was in were respectful.

Thanks for sharing; I enjoyed your first hand account. The high school senior I tutor also went and his experience was much like yours. He had a wonderful time. I take all news reports, both positive and negative, with grain of salt. It's cool to hear the perspective of someone who was in the middle of things.

- We went to a 7-11, I needed some chapstick. My husband had a drink so he waited at the door. That's when he saw a guy inside with a t-shirt with writing on the back in arabic and in english it said something about Trump the devil and cut out the devil's tongue. He also had a ginormous suitcase. My husband thought that the cops should probably be aware of it. One of the cops seemed super irritated by the idea and then went off to chat with the guy. What was he doing that your DH thought the cops should be aware of? It sounds like you had a great experience. Did the tickets give you a specific area for viewing the inauguration and the parade? I know some areas are reserved, but wonder about the Mall and open areas of the parade route which seem to be more like general seating/first come gets the best spot.

Great account of your visit, Freebird. And that painting is just beautiful. I'm so glad to hear your congressman was so gracious and treated you so kindly, that's nice to hear. I'm sure he'll make good on that little plane trip.
I think your story would be something your local paper would be interested in, you should contact them with this story!

I think it fell into the "if you see something, say something" category for my husband. The cop agreed I guess. I doubt it was anything but better safe than sorry. Our tickets got us into a closer viewing area. Standing room up front. There were some empty seats in front of us. Ugh... maddening. lol Would have loved an upgrade. From what I understand those are for family of the congressmen/women, etc. I think from the reflecting pool back was open areas without security so anyone can go in there all the way back to the washington monument.
