I loved reading your post! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I also want to thank you for getting those girls to the potty! That's something I seem to have trouble with in a crowd. 4'11", 100 pounds and a soft voice gets me no where.
Your painting is beautiful and you and your DH are lovely! Please share a close up of the painting, if you have one. It always amazes me the details you can paint.

Thank you for sharing a great story! I'm glad for you that it was a wonderful experience from your bucket list. Great portrait-I'm sure he'll treasure it.
And, just saying, that sometimes the truth is in your perspective.

I loved reading your account, Freebird. Thank you for taking the time (and using finger skin to type it all ). And I want to thank Library Lady and the other people whom I know are not Trump supporters for their class in this thread. I'm not sure why EVERY single thread possible gets turned into Trump negativity and I really, really appreciate you Library Lady for being nice. This was a nice and interesting thread. Believe me there are PLENTY of other threads available to thump on Trump.

Sounds like a great experience! Your painting looks amazing, no wonder his staff contacted him!
I'd love to go to an inauguration myself, guess I need to start a walking regimen and hope I get lucky enough to get tickets in 4 years! TFS!

Thanks for sharing your experience and glad that you did not get near the protest on Friday that turned violent. You are a very talented painter, it is no wonder that he loved the gift. You did a great job on it.

Sounds like a great trip. So glad to hear this! Because according to my fb newsfeed (by people who weren't there), the place was just inundated with protesters behaving badly, treating inauguration guests rudely and being flat out disrespectful. To hear it from them, liberal interlopers were just out of control. Glad to hear from someone actually there that it is lies. I think things get greatly exaggerated by the press. There WERE protesters, clearly. I just didn't see any rowdy ones. We left on Friday around 6 p.m. and I guess around that time downtown is when the rioting started. I didn't see any of that. Lana I loved your account of your time in DC! You made me feel like I was right there with you. I'm glad it was such a positive experience for you. And I'm glad your congressman was so appreciative of your portrait. I really wish he would have tagged you and your professional page when he posted the pics! I hope this doesn't escalate the protest/no protest discussion. This was posted by one of my FB friends, a black man who went to school with dh. I'm so glad your experience was different! "A few reflections from DC. As I mentioned a couple days ago, politics aside, seeing a President inaugurated is a wonderful opportunity and I'm grateful to those who helped make that happen for me. I'm also glad to have had the opportunity to share it with my son Tyler. Something I hope he never forgets. I'm sure by now many have seen the various protests in DC and elsewhere organized by those who oppose President Trump. It is the right and responsibility of every American to voice their dissent and displeasure with our government. However, violently "protesting" by using vandalism and intimidation of fellow citizens is WRONG and should NOT be celebrated as political dissent. Case in point, last evening while walking along the sidewalk with other attendees to the Inaugural Ball, a group of millennials were screaming "white trash" at me. I knew they were talking to me because I I asked one of the ring leaders if he was talking to me and he said "yes". I told him that as a black man and a Republican I've had many epithets hurled at me over the years. "White Trash" was a new one. He said, 'well you are!' Incredulous, I kept on walking. These are tumultuous times. Americans on all sides need to take a deep breath."

I only saw a small hand full of people that made me think "wow, totally trashy 'uneducated' types". Through the election cycle I heard a lot about uneducated white trash, but I certainly didn't see it while I was there. I mostly saw middle class, everyday type people. I certainly saw NO "white trash" going to the Inaugural balls, and definitely no black "white trash" lol.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip and (no surprise) your paining is amazing!! I wish I had the opportunity to cross something big like this off my bucket list.
(For the record, most Jews did not vote for Trump. Entire branches of my family were wiped out in the Holocaust and when I talk to my mom about this she also makes comparisons to when Hitler came to power.)

We got tickets from our senator too and I went with my bil and 2 teenage daughters. I wanted them to experience a part of history and the civic process. Thankfully, the weather held off b/c I was expecting a day spent standing in the rain . We experienced much the same thing you did. - We didn't witness any of the illegal protest behaviors. We only saw a few people holding protest signs. We weren't in the area of the fires or broken windows. - Lots of booing every time Hillary was shown on the jumbotron and booing throughout Schumer's speech. - Lots of "Trump" chants throughout. - People in our area were respectful and friendly. - Our feet were frozen from standing on cold, wet ground . - One trip to the portapotties - blech. - The barricades were frustrating. We wanted to go to a museum afterwards, but couldn't figure out how to get there from where we were and gave up after walking awhile. I'm glad we went. I told my kids now they don't have to go again until they have kids. It was a one and done sort of experience for all of us .

That was a great read. I enjoyed all the details especially getting to hear it from someone I "know".
We went to DC once and the walking was insane. I feel like we walked even more than we visited Disney. I love to walk but DC wore me out.
eta: I can't believe you went to so much trouble to make that painting. He must have been really touched. I'm in awe of people with artistic gifts.

I just love that you did a portrait of your Congressman! And then that he made a special trip in to come see the portrait and meet you. I hope he follows through with his offer to take you up in his plane.

What a great experience! We were traveling from Pgh. to Maryland Saturday evening to take my oldest back to college and at a reststop in Breezewood we talked to several women with pink hats that were in DC for the march on Saturday. They said they had an amazing time at the march! What great weather everyone had for Friday and Saturday. It's not always that warm in DC in Jan.!

TFS! sounds like you had a great time.
We now call it "Walkington DC" because of all the walking involved in a visit there.

Funny possible coincidence - the odds are good we knew that group of high school kids! Well, not them, but DH is friends with one of the school founders who accompanied them. I have to figure that there weren't too many small groups of high school kids from St. Louis there! That's crazy. I'm wondering if it was them. I didn't ask the name of the school but she said most of their high school went and it was a "very small high school in St. Louis" I wish I would have taken a picture with this girl. She was just the sweetest kid! I bet it was them, I know it's a very small school! Too funny!
