I reminded my freshman daughter that her FAFSA needed to be filed. She is over now and I am ready to disown her to make filing easier for us both, physically and emotionally. Kill me now.

The worst part of that form is remembering all the password information. Last year we made a point to write all of that down and keep it with our tax information so that we could get through it faster this year. It made a huge difference. Glad that I only have to do it one more time.

It should be a little easier to complete this year because it now uses your 2015 vs. 2016 tax information.

Our hell right now is the "verification" process. We need to apparently prove that last for 2015 dd didn't file a w2 and the only proof they accept is a letter or Something from the IRS saying she didn't file (she would have been 15) but the all ways to contact them For this aren't working. Has anyone been able to successfully get this information this year?

Glad that I only have to do it one more time. That was a big obstacle. I put it with the tax paperwork, but DH decided to "reorganize" last month. I can't find it! Grrr. She got in and reset her password, but if She "knew she had to do this she wouldn't have lost it...." I found something else she failed to submit last year and I am getting more irritated with her by the minute.

Make a folder. Esp if your dd is starting out. I put ALL our college communications, financial, grants, scholarships and all the passwords, SS #s etc all in an accordion file. Makes it SOO easy.

Yep been there done that recently. And DD was in the Navy but got a medical discharge but was in long enough now the Navy pays for her school. The paperwork is beyond crazy. And she wants me to take it over to deal with. Sorry Charlie, you are a big girl. I will help but I am NOT doing it. So far so good, she is in her second semester and only $800 out of pocket!!! WHOOT for the Navy even though they gave her the boot.
OH and after reading the other posts.. she is classified as an independent so no paperwork from mom and dad needed, phew!!

I'm so over the FAFSA. I tried a few times to sign online and it wouldn't accept that. So, I printed out the form and mailed it in. Just got a letter telling me that they were returning my form(the form wasn't included in the letter)and that there was a problem. I'm OVER it.

The worst part is having to go through the hoops of completing it each year, knowing we aren't getting any benefit from it. It's like a cruel joke.

SaveSave I thought it wasn't due until March. Deadline for the school DS chose is Feb 15. From what I remember when my girls were in school, the deadline varied depending on the school.

I agree at least better than years past when we had to use current year taxes and I would have to estimate income. My husband has a day job and also a home business. Impossible to estimate income. But yes a pain in the rear and also a family that never received grants.

Call me any kind of mom you want, but I filled these out for both my girls. They are sophomores this year. With school and work, they don't have a ton of time and they don't live nearby. It's stressful enough for ME to fill out.
And yes, passwords are the devil.
My bank allows me to use my fingerprint code to enter. I love them more than I can say.

My 2 DDs are at 2 different schools and luckily, they aren't required at either.

Both my kids' colleges require it. (Well, the colleges DD is applying to--she's a HS senior). It's to make sure that the student doesn't qualify for anything before they receive merit aid from the schools. We are fortunate that both kids are excellent students and have large merit scholarships. The pain of filing the FAFSA is worth it, but still a pain!

Yep some schools require for scholarships even if they aren't need based so we will have to complete it even though we won't qualify for anything.

We took two hours to update the FAFSA. Neither dh nor I could sign in. We knew our passwords were correct because we updated DH's account in November for his teaching forgiveness program. DH tried to reset his password, but it locjed him out. We had to use an iPad because our 7 year old desktop isnt logging onto the wifi, and we couldn't print the signature form. We ended up submitting without signature because we were so fed up that we just wanted it over. I am complaining to anyone in Washington who will listen tomorrow.

This is true, however, if you have some tragic change of circumstances and have not filled it out, your child may not be eligible for the student federal loans if it has not been filled out. So it's always a good idea to fill it out, just in case.

I never thought the FAFSA was too bad. Now the additional CSS form - yikes! That took me a LONG time to fill out. Despite that I am very thankful for Financial Aid, as without it there is no way my kids could attend college.

Everyone told us we had to and I got the financial aid person on the phone and said we would not do it. They finally put a note in each of the girls' files stating we were exempt from doing it.

Even if the school doesn't require it, or you don't get anything I would highly recommend you still do it. My dd applied for a grant scholarship to pay for her law internship this spring semester, and got it. They took info from her FAFSA, her grades, essay, etc. You just never know when the kids will need it. I only have one more yr and then I'm done with the dang thing!!
