Are any of your daughters on a college dance team or plan to try out? My daughter is a high school senior and has been dancing since she was 3. She will probably try out for a team for the college she plans to go to. I am so excited for her to do it, as I think she would really enjoy performing at football and basketball games. So I thought I would ask the peas if they have any experience with college dance teams. I was on the pom squad at Univ. of Maryland in college and loved it!

No college aged children, girls, or dancers (heck, our son looks awkward doing the "frat boy shuffle" : here. However, a friend's daughter attended dance team tryouts as an incoming freshman at her universaity a couple years ago. She recalls being intimidated & humbled by the sheer number of people at tryouts & their talent, skill, confidence, grace, & attractiveness. She is/was grateful to ultimately make the team, after several rounds of cuts, & has enjoyed the experience. Her mom has mentioned the strict rules (eg appearance, traveling, off season requirements) & the time commitment, when expressing concerns about her daughter's hectic schedule. Has your daughter heard from all the colleges/universities to which she applied? Has she selected a school or leaning toward one yet? Wishing her all the best as she embarks on this next chapter of her life...(((hugs)))

My dd will be trying out this year. She is a high school senior. She's attended a couple of dance clinics at a state college to get the feel for that team she will likely try out for another team or two out of state. There was a girl on her team last year that is a freshman in college this year and made the university of Kentucky dance team (not our state) They have a huge team! Only some of their team competes but they all dance at games and events. That girl didn't make the competition team and she was the best one on our hoghschool dance team.

My daughter has been accepted to the 6 universities she applied too, and is going to Accepted Student Days this spring to make her choice. The local university is a good possibility because they are ranked #5 for nursing in the US, and she was accepted there to nursing. She is trying to get in touch with the coach to observe a practice but is having trouble getting in touch (and she doesn't want to keep calling and sounding like a bother). She heard about 60-80 try out. The university that is 9 hrs. away would be very hard to make, so she doesn't think she has a good chance there (and she has a dance comp that weekend that she doesn't want to miss - and she doesn't think she would make that team anyways).

That's great that your daughter has been to dance clinics! The local universities do not have clinics, but I notice that many teams do (4 out of the 6 schools my daughter is choosing from have clinics). It seems the teams in the south are very good and very hard to make. Good luck to your daughter! Seems that most hold their tryouts in April, and my daughter has a dance comp the third weekend in April, a big date for many dance team tryouts. Then her prom is in April for the first time ever, and that is another tryout weekend at two of her schools.

I had a few friends from high school move on to the Kilgore Rangerettes. They said it was VERY competitive but a great experience. None of my friends went on to university teams after though but mainly because the 2 years on the team at Kilgore is exhausting.

My friend's daughter is on Hofstra's dance/Pom team. Very tough training schedule, but she's loving it. Best advice is to really work on her turns. And then work some more. Turns are really important!

Congratulations to your daughter for acceptance to all six universities! She's fortunate to have a local university that offers her desired major as one of the options. Perhaps the university's athletic department administrative assistant could answer whether dance practices are open or schedule your daughter to observe a future practice, so she doesn't have to continue trying to reach the coach. Hope she enjoys acceptance days at the various schools & discovers the right fit for her (& you approve)!

Oh well, the next step is to go to one of the women's games (cheaper than mens) to watch. Thanks for your help, I think I will try calling the athletic dept and see if they have any info. Good idea! Okay, just called the athletic dept. and they said I have to contact the coach and gave me her number. I wanted to say my daughter has tried calling several times, but then I don't want her to be on the coach's bad side!

Turns are really important! Thank you! A woman who owns a local dance supply store has a daughter that was on a college dance team about 7 yrs. ago. I was talking to her about it yesterday and she said her daughter took a private lesson with a dance studio to work on turns and leaps!

Perhaps the lack of response from the coach means practices are not open to prospective team members. Attending a game will allow your daughter to observe the team & coach in action. Then, she can reference the game when contacting the coach; perhaps having made the effort to observe will get the coach's attention. Best wishes.

DD has several friends on college dance teams, at least one of whom was making her decision on which college to attend based on what team she made. Some of these are very competitive! I am always surprised by the ballet dancers who make this transition. 3 of her former ballet friends are on college dance teams now.

Some accept video tryout but I think that's a real disadvantage - still better than nothing though. Good luck to your dd! Let us know if she makes a team.

None of my friends went on to university teams after though but mainly because the 2 years on the team at Kilgore is exhausting. My cousin was a Kilgore Rangerette who danced all performances her freshman year (apparently the freshman have to try out for each performance). She then went on to dance for the Dallas Cowboys for 3 years (and made the show team). I have no doubt that both of those experiences were very time consuming and exhausting. Other than that, I have nothing to say about college dance teams, other than good luck with tryouts!

When we moved my oldest into college in Aug., we contacted the dance team at that school about observing and they were so welcoming. My middle daughter attended a practice, met the coach and the girls on the squad and they were wonderful. Every time she emailed she got a response each time. I guess since that was our first attempt and it was so good, we are spoiled! Unfortunately the school she is most likely to go is the team that is harder to get info from. Other schools have been great at helping us, but they are just far away. I appreciate all your help! You have given me some great ideas!
