"Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska both said Wednesday they would not vote to support Betsy DeVos, President Donald Trump's choice for education secretary. The two women are the first sitting Republican senators to publicly say they wouldn't back one of Trump's Cabinet nominees."
With Collins and Murkowski, and if the Dems are united, that will result in a tie with Pence as tie-breaker. We need just one more Repub against Devos to prevent the tie.

Good for them, though I am curious who his second choice would be.

We've been lobbying Cornyn and Cruz hard here in Texas. They've both announced their support for DeVos, though, and as of this week their offices are refusing to see constituents with or without an appointment. Phones are never answered and voice mail boxes perpetually full.
Asshats.

Trump isn't going to be happy. You know his motto..follow me and obey me and all is good.

Tim Scott made it clear early on that he had decided DeVos was a super duper choice, and Lindsey Graham has now announced his support for her as well. I know they have been bombarded with calls and emails from their constituents begging them to reconsider. They're ignoring us, alas.

They're not taking appointments. At all. Even to meet with a low-level staffer. We are working hard to take Cruz down in 2018. There is hope that Rep. Joaquin Castro will run against him.

My senator is squarely in Trump's pocket, tucked in nice and tight, no room for independent thought. I'd contact him, but, "he knows what's best for us". And, I know this state will re-elect him, even though he promised, PROMISED, before his last election, he wasn't going to run again. I guess we are just stupid like that.

I called around 1 PM today I think. I don't know if it will matter, the asshats will still vote party lines most likely. None of the Rs will grow a pair and do what is good for the COUNTRY instead of themselves.

I think Toomey of PA and Heller of Nevada (?) are considered the possible defections from the Republican Party line. It might be better to call them than the senators you know will vote yes on DeVos.

If you can't get through on the phone, use this service: Fax them for free!Toomey's Allentown office actually told some of the Tuesdays with Toomey people this week that the calls/faxes/mail are making a difference and that they are completely overwhelmed with the messages getting through.

They are not doing their jobs if they are unwilling to hear their constituents. They work for you, and need reminding of that, as they seem to have forgotten.

I e-mailed my senators. They both have been somewhat cold toward Trump, supporters, but guarded. I'm hopeful someone else breaks party lines.
This is the e-mail I sent. Feel free to use it if you wish. I know it's easier to get the word out if you can just take a few seconds to copy and paste:
Dear Senator,
You have said in the past that education is an important issue to you. As the senator of one of the bottom performing states in education, I would hope you would do all you could to secure as much support as you can for our children in Washington.
I truly believe that Ms. DeVos will not be a good education secretary. I would go so far as to say that nominating her would be a disaster for our children. They need an education secretary that supports special education, that understands the importance of public schools, and will support free education in our country without openly undermining the ability for every child to get a quality education.
Please, Mr. *****, do not vote to confirm this woman.
Please support our children. They need more than this. Do what you can to make sure they get it.
I know the vote is close. You could be the one that makes the difference.
Thank you,

This may be a dumb question...but is there a way to find out if your senators are planning to vote for or against her? One of mine is a democrat, and I have no doubt she will vote against Devos, but the other is a republican, who I can't stand anyway, and I don't know what he will do. I will email him, but I don't want to look like a total a$$ and ask him not to vote for her if he isn't planning to anyway.

Toomey is impossible to reach right now. All of his mailboxes, etc are full. He doesn't have time to check them because he was hanging in CA with the Koch Brothers. I have no doubt that he will vote for her but everyone in my family left him messages last week before he suddenly went off the grid.

Write that you don't know who he's planning to vote for but that you, a voter (who votes in both the primaries and the general) are not in favor of DeVos. Give your reasons. If he's not planning on voting for her, you've given him more support. If he is on the fence, your letter could help get that stack of no letters higher on his desk.
