I binge read this book over a three day weekend back in '93 or '94. I could NOT put it down. I should re-read it.

My big issue with the unabridged version wasn't any horror (in the traditional sense) but the rape scene. Granted, I may be remembering incorrectly, but I don't recall it being in the original (or at least not quite so graphically). If you are referring to the cross-country trip, you are right. My understanding is that what happened is that the book was originally published in an edited version, because to produce the tome that would be the whole unedited thing, the paperback would have cost (at retail) what the publisher considered an unacceptably high amount. Remember that King was not nearly as famous then as he is now. King said it always bothered him that that particular book had been abridged/edited so much, so once he had the pull, he caused it to be re-released in his original, unabridged version. At that point, the publisher knew anything he put out would sell, so it got published. The later one is definitely a LONG book. I never knew this! Guess I'll head over to Amazon and get myself the newer unabridged version.

I'm a huge Stephen King fan. I've read everything he's ever written except the Gunslinger books. The Stand is my all time favorite. I read it when it 1st came out....the heavily cut one. Then when he became more popular he released the un-cut version of the book. It was something like 1600 plus pages?? I have the DVD of the original mini series...the one with Rob Lowe and I watch it at least every couple of months. It is not your traditional horror tome, but a whole lot of King's writings aren't. It is more along the lines of "this is the horror of how the world ends" type of horror. It's a very classic good against evil story. There is a lot of references to God in the story. I think it is the best book he has ever written.

This was the book that started my love of the post-apocalyptic fiction. I love this book, and I would also think ( snowsilver) you will like it-in my opinion, it has spiritual overtones that I think you will appreciate. I can't wait for you to meet Tom and Mother Abigail.

Just got my unabridged version which I never even knew was a thing. Good lord, I'm going to be reading this one for awhile. Lol. Good thing it's not hardback or I'd need a sling to hold it up in bed. 😜

This is my all time favorite! I read it every summer during college then I read bigger version. I think I will reread it too.
I think of this book every time I go through a tunnel. You have to admit the Lincoln Tunnel was creepy.

Is this the M O O N book/series? Yes, it's the "M-O-O-N, that spells ... " story. Just one long book. I really need to re-read. And I thought the shorter version was better. The uncut seemed kind of self-indulgent and unnecessary. But I'll give it another try.

This was not my favorite SK book...I don't think I even finished it. I do know I wouldn't really classify it as "horror", though. To me horror iwoukd be Cujo, It, Carrie, etc.

Most of King's novels I would not consider horror, and definitely not The Stand.
His short stories, now THOSE I consider horror. So much so that I could not get them out of my house fast enough, especially not the one that had the monkey on it.
So any of his books/stories that have been made into movies or mini-series are not that great. But a classic is "Maximum Exposure." I have watched it, or parts of it, many times. It's a total B-movie flick, and doesn't take much brainpower to watch.

I read a lot of Dean Koontz years ago but was never a big fan of Stephen King. I did read a couple of his books but can't even remember what they were. About a year ago I read The Stand and loved it. Right after that the mini series was on TV and I really enjoyed that too. It is not horror and is definitely really good read.

Very long. I started it. Was good, but not sure how it ended, so I cannot help you there. His book 11-22-63 (also not horror ) is excellent. I vote you read that! I would also vote 11-22-63. I also like it better that The Stand because the end of The Stand was meh for me. Duma Key has ghosts, but the horror is minimal. Great character study Then again, I am a huge Stephen King fan.

I just took a blast into the past and watched "The Stand" miniseries that they made back in '94. Oh, the acting was 90's cheese despite the star studded cast. I still enjoyed it.

Readdddddd iiitttttt! I loved it! I also adore the gunslinger books. The talisman is also good as is The Eyes of The Dragon. I think I might love Flagg! Lol No zombies, ghouls, etc in them. I know this is an older thread, but OMG am I the only person who is just now realizing the Man in Black in "The Gunslinger" is Randall Flagg?

Funny, due to the movie coming, Dh and my brother and SIL have convinced me to start the series. I did, however, know the Randall Flagg part.
