I have never read Steven King because I just don't care for horror stories. But I just read that The Stand is NOT horror. No ghouls, zombies, etc. etc. The review said it is a good against evil story. So tell me: Is it truly NOT horror? And please tell me that "good" wins. And convince me I should read it  |

READ IT! The Stand is one of my top ten favorite books of all time. It isn't horror. You will love it!

Very long. I started it. Was good, but not sure how it ended, so I cannot help you there.
His book 11-22-63 (also not horror ) is excellent. I vote you read that!

It is not horror in the way of ghouls and zombies. It's more like a societal collapse. It's long but I loved it. And I can't spoil the end for you.

That is not my typical genre but I did read The Stand a long time ago, and I recall really liking it and it being an un-putdownable book. No ghouls, zombies, vampires, werewolves etc.

I don't generally care for Stephen King, because of the horror aspect. I've read The Stand and found it not filled with horror -- which is not to say that it is not unsettling in a apocalyptic way and it is a long read -- sometimes pretty tedious. But it has been a story that has stayed with me.

It is also one of my favorite books of all time. There is some supernatural components to it - but not horror. If you read Stephen King it is more like Misery with a bit of It thrown in. The Stand is also the only book whose film adaptation was genuinely good. None of his other stories translated as well to film. Maybe the Green Mile?  |

It's my favourite Stephen King book - and I LOVED the unabridged version.
It's not traditional horror - no. No zombies, no ghouls, no vampires, nothing that goes bump in the night, lol - but it IS apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic and there are definitely some unpleasant scenes. Over all - yes - good vs evil

My #1 favorite book. The TV adaption is also excellent. Not horror, but some intensely suspenseful moments.

One of my favorite books ever. Not horror, can be scary but not in the same terrifying way Salem's Lot was. I would say the ending is uplifting. In a sad, perhaps slightly harrowing way. But big picture: uplifting. Now I want to read it again. ETA I loved the mini-series, too. Fantastic cast. |

I am not a horror fan, and skip some of SK's books.
Agree that the TV mini series with Molly Ringwald and Gary Sinise was really good.

I agree, not horror just good vs. evil but could be considered "scary" in some parts. I thought it was a great book. It's my Mom's favorite book of all time and she has probably read it 20 times or more and always says she finds something new in it each time. My dd, who is an avid reader, read it when she was 11. (I wasn't one to censor her reading.) She loved it too. We all loved the mini series also. Perfect actors cast for each character. I vote read it! |

Stephen King is an amazing storyteller and it is truly one of his best stories of all time. I wouldn't classify it as horror, but as an early post-apocalyptic novel.
I also suggest 11/23/63.

It's not horror. It is gross in some parts -- it is a book that opens with a nationwide plague -- and a lot of people die, but it's not horror. And good prevails (albeit, again, with a lot of deaths).

I read devoured every Stephen King novel when I was a teenager / early 20s back in the 80s so I assume I read it. I'm certain that I did. But reading through the plot of it just now, I can't remember any of it! Oh well, I guess that just means I need to buy another copy (or try to dig my old copy out of the boxes in the roof) and re-read it.
