I'm looking for a place next June (2015) for my family and I to stay for a combo birthday/graduation trip. I'd like to stay around the Kaanapali area, as we like beach activities. We like resort-type hotels that offer some amenities (I need a pool bar ). Any suggestions? I'm checking all the travel sites, VRBO, etc. So far my favorite property is Honua Kai, but man...Maui is expensive!

I stayed at the Ka'anapali Beach Resort in May 2011. It was not super posh but it was very clean and the staff was awesome. It is also an older hotel (but updated) and is literally steps away from the beach.
I would not consider it overly resort-ish but it was really nice. They do not have a true pool bar but there are tiki hut bars on the same grounds.
There is a hotel resort just right next door that might be more of what you are looking for but I cannot remember the name right off hand. If I heard the name I'd know it.
I love Maui and would go back in a heartbeat!!!

We always stay at Aston Maui Kaanapali Villas. Its on Kaanapali, but on the "other" side of Black Rock. It's a quiet, no frills place.

We stayed at the Westin....it was a friend's timeshare though, so I am not sure how regular guests work. It was nice because the room had a small kitchen and we tended to eat breakfast in the room.

We've stayed at the Westin several times (not to be confused with the Westin Villas that the above poster stayed at.) It's right next to Whaler's Village which we loved. We've also stayed at the Hyatt which has a true swim up bar. Haven't stayed in either one in about 10 years. We've also stayed at the Aston Maui Kaanapali Villas but prefer to be in Kaanapali proper. When we were staying at the Westin Magic Johnson and his family were staying there too and he pretended to tackle DS in the pool. It was the highlight of his vacation. Someone introduced us but I knew he was on vacation with his family so I didn't ask to take pictures.
ETA: the Honua Kai didn't exist when we were there. It looks lovely.

Actually the Hyatt doesn't have a true swim up pool bar. It has a bar in the cave section of the pool, but to sit at the bar you have to get out of the water and go around the cave wall. Hard to explain. The fairmont down in Wailea had a swim up bar in the pool section up top. By the entrance to the water slide. It does have an adult only pool too - which was awesome.

We stayed at the Honua Kai a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. The downside is lack of a beach and really rough waves. It's a short drive to Ka'anapali.

We've only stayed in Wailea so I have no suggestions -- but have fun!!! We just got back from Kauai and it was heaven.

We loved the Kaanapali Beach Club. It use to be an Embassy Suites so the rooms are spacious and have a partial kitchen. I Jen

We stayed at the Westin Villas and loved it so much we are going back in February! Loved the fact it had a washer and dryer and a full kitchen. Fabulous staff and great location with a very convenient shuttle that went all over the area. Enjoy Maui!

We used Redweek to book a timeshare condo at the Marriott Beach Club. Very nice property and location. We also prefer Wailea and that's where we always go now.

We stayed at the Honua Kai last year and loved it. Lots of different little pool areas, some adult only which suited us, but lots of fun for kids too. We hired a car and there was so much to do relatively nearby. We stayed in a studio apartment complete with kitchen. We went to the Safeway(?) supermarket to buy food and were in there for several hours. Our first time in an American supermarket - so many choices of EVERYTHING compared to where we live!! They offer snuba diving and snorkelling which was fun. We chose the Honua Kai after hours spent on Trip Advisor. It is how we picked all our places to stay in Hawai, on Oahu, The Big Island and Maui and we were not disappointed with any of them. Enjoy your holiday. I am very jealous. We hope to come again next year. Corinne
