So we're going to see U2 in Seattle in May, and want to spend 4 to 6 days in Olympic National Park, too. Looking for ideas on where to stay. Leaning toward Port Angeles or Ocean Shores. Or should we do a couple nights in each place? But I also want to see Neah Bay. And Lake Quinault.
If you had 4 to 6 days to spend in the park, what would you do?

Several years ago before Twilight, we stayed in Forks. It was nice because it was kind of in the middle of all 3 areas, but Port Angeles and another location that is near Ho forest and the Beaches would work, too.
I'm not sure if I waited too late to make reservations but I remember a lot of places I looked at were booked. And I didn't understand that the different areas were so far apart.
My favorite area was Ruby Beach. Probably because I don't get to go to the ocean much.

I would cross Ocean Shores off the list. We love Lake Quinault Lodge and would love to try Lake Cerescent Lodge some day.
In May, snow could be a factor but if possible, Hurricane Ridge is a must on my list!
Klaloch is on the beach between Quinault and Forks.

I love klaloch.. and if you are hikers at all.. bring rain gear and tennis shoes and hike out to the ocean from lake ozette.. 3 miles on board walk. bring walking poles.. it can be slick.. but you get out to the wild beach.. and it is almost level. neah bay is super cool.. the museum is worth the drive.. go out to tatoosh head.
see the logging museum in forks. it is small but very good. also, go to hoh river and walk up the trail even a mile or two.. even in the rain you will be mostly dry. you can also stay and swim at the solduck hotsprings. the solduc falls are a mile walk.
then drive up to hurricane ridge and throw snowballs. if the weather is nice, you see mt olympus and vancover island. you can also go ocean fishing off neah bay. and hood canal is a narrow but neat drive.. eat oysters on the Hamma Hamma River. Port Townsend is worth a place to stay and visit.. cute victorian town.
you can see I have spent a lot of time there. I took three backpacking trips over there when young. (30-60 miles)

I don't care for Ocean Shores. It's not particularly pretty, either architecturally or in terms of the views. If you want to stay on the coast, I'd consider Klaloch Lodge -- it's not incredibly fancy, but it has a decent restaurant and beautiful views and is nice. It's also a short drive from Ruby Beach, which is my favorite spot along the coast there.
I stay at Quinault Lodge, on Lake Quinault. It is a big, old-style national park lodge (with some more modern outbuildings), and has a nice restaurant, a big lawn where you can hang out, a bar and big public lodge area in the main building, trails along the lake front, and easy proximity to the attractions right around the lake. It's also a reasonable drive to pretty much everywhere else in that general area where you'd want to go.

Kalaloch is my favorite place in the world, I've Benn going there every summer since I was a kid. It's not fancy and is out in the middle of nowhere, but I love it.

Okay, no Ocean Shores. I did look at the lodge at Lake Quinault. Looks nice. And I've seen some amazing pictures of Ruby Beach on pinterest. I'll have to look up Kalaloch.
So in mid May is it still cold? I know it will be rainy. Will it be full on raining most days, or drizzly, or what? Trying to figure out what I need to buy for the teenagers to wear.
Thanks!

Could be rainy or not...but I would plan for some drizzle. Have stayed at Lake Quinault Lodge twice and it has always been sunny. Could be cold at the beach or Hurricane Ridge but I would probably take a fleece sweatshirt and a light weight windbreaker. If you like gorgeous beaches, check out La Push which is close to Forks. Klaloch = right on the beach Lake Quinault = in the middle of a forest, huge trees, hiking trails You could do 2 nights at LQ, 2 nights at Klaloch and final 2 nights in Port Angeles.

It won't be warm and it most likely will be drizzly/foggy, but not heavy rain (probably). Where do you live?

I was in Port Angeles briefly last May. It's a lovely little town. That's not much help.

I live in the Houston area. We look forward to going to the PNW every year or two to escape the heat. I've seen the Oregon coast a few times, but have still never been to WA except Cape Disappointment (which was really cool), so I'm very excited about this trip!

Definitely Kalaloch or Lake Quinault. Such a great area, and either place is a good base for traveling around the Olympic Peninsula. We spent so much time there years ago and I'm hoping to plan another trip there soon. We always loved the cabins at Kalaloch overlooking the water. Expect rain any time in the rainforest.
