Sophmore or Junior? As late as Senior?
We are getting quite a few offers to see open houses, but it seems mighty early in the game.

We went summer between Jr./Sr. year. Applied in October. Edited to say maybe it was Spring Jr. Year as I remember kids being in the cafeteria and the campus being busy. It's not like that in the summer. But it wasn't any earlier than that. And I never visited colleges. I was in Europe.

Did out first as a sophomore - but did most of them this fall - just before priority/early entry deadline in September-October of senior year.

We went summer between Jr./Sr. year. Applied in November. If she gets into her 2nd and 3rd choice and not her first we will do a final determining trip to both in the spring

It probably depends on the kid and how far afield they're interested in going. We actually squeezed one in freshman year while on vacation. She's not at all seriously looking, but wanted to start to get the feel of different environments - small vs big - urban vs small town, etc. She figured it would help her narrow things down when she starts looking more seriously. We happened to be vacationing near a school on her radar, so figured why not. There's another school near her ballet intensive she plans on visiting this summer.

First one was summer after 9th grade year. They had a big program, which included parents, on how to do the college search, info on financial aid, test taking/prep, etc. so it was geared toward those in 9th and 10th grade. Was probably more helpful for me than for DD. A few here and there 10th grade and then most of them were summer after 11th grade. She's been accepted to all of the ones she's applied to, so we're now on our second round of visits/scholarship competitions for the 5 she is most interested in. 9th grade DS is being dragged along to most of them and he is getting a good idea of what he likes and doesn't like.

We started between sophomore and junior year, in the summer while we were on vacation. Did more the following summer, then one in the fall of senior year.
I think the earlier date was good for the kids to see what they were working towards. We sat down with admissions counselors, talked about grades, test scores and money, and the kids got a feel for college life. That junior year I saw both kids really getting serious towards their grades. Then the visits the following summer were good for when they had a better idea of their major and what they wanted in a school.

It's startling how early those letters arrive!
Our District recommends visiting at least one freshman year, maybe two sophomore, then get serious. But I tell you, we tried casually visiting a campus before sophomore year and DS was totally not into it and annoyed. Maybe it's good advice for families unfamiliar with college? ETA or kids who know what they want to do?
The junior year trips went much better- made sense. My neighbor chose to only visit after he was accepted to a few schools, before final decision. That worked well for him.

We went the fall of junior year to the first one (which ended up being THE ONE). We did a visit to another school the end of summer before Senior Year, but didn't like the way the people we met with treated us, so he didn't even apply there.

We had one DD who played sports and when they were at team camps during the summer they went on group tours. It really helped her eliminate schools early on. We visited spring of Junior year and early fall of Senior year. This was 17 years go though.

We have a community college that offers dual enrollment as early as 9th grade if they really wanted to so we get a flyer every year about it.
My oldest is a sophomore right now. I suspect in May/June, we'll get a few flyers from other colleges and they won't stop until after Ds2 graduates in '20. We won't be attending any this summer but next summer, I plan on taking both of them to a few (it'd be between DS1's junior/senior years and DS2 sophomore/junior years). Tour the schools once instead of twice.

We visited colleges when we were in the area when DD was a freshman; not that she was particularly interested in a particular school. We took it "seriously" in the latter part of junior year.

We did ours the summer before their Senior year. So right before they would start applying in the fall. They weren't interested before then.

Both my kids' schools had field trips to the local Cal State University and University of California campus at the end of 8th grade. I went along on DD's UC San Diego visit and left wanting to enroll myself. We toured a number of UC and Cal State campuses the summer before junior year and it just reinforced DS's top pick.

We took a walk around the U of Virginia, not an official tour, in the summer before DS's sophomore year, just because we were in the area on vacation.
Last summer, when DS was a rising junior, we took our first official tour at UConn. He was the only person on the tour who wasn't a rising senior. I think that tour was extremely valuable for him because it made college a reality and really started him thinking about it.

My kid didn't go until the beginning of his senior year. I think he already knew where he was going and didn't have the interest most kids do. He wanted a solid engineering college and went more by the websites.

I actually went to a college planning night last night at my son's high school. DH took DS on a couple of college tours last summer, right after DS's sophomore year. Heading to a couple more over spring school break and more this summer. College has been on this kid's radar since 8th grade, he is excited to think about it. Hopefully he will narrow it down to 4-5 by early fall. Good luck!

We took my youngest to a sophomore showcase her sophomore year. It was only an hour away, but it really got her to start thinking about what she wanted in a college, where she might like to go, what she needed to think about. Then we did several visits her junior year to universities she wanted to check out, then did a couple more visits during her fall semester of senior year to finalize it.

I'm still 17 or so years away...but I will make my kid start thinking about it as a freshman. But visiting, junior is fine. Or if you've already applied to the places you want to go, senior is fine for visiting. But gotta start thinking about it early.

We went between Sophomore/Jr year. Why? Because that gave dd time to figure out what she'd like and if there were anymore schools she'd like to see.
One of the college presenters asked this very question. He praised those that went between Sophomore/Junior year.
DD took her ACT's during Jr. year and had that all done too. She applied in the Fall of Senior year. It worked for us and seemed a little less stressful on all of us.

We first went spring of junior year. We visited 5 schools in all between spring of junior year and late fall of senior year. Honestly, my son found all the "pitches" stressful and a little overwhelming. I can't imagine people who visit a dozen or more or start really early which for some kids will be way more stressful.
My DS is a senior - he's happy that the emails are finally starting to slow down. DON'T MISS OUT - WE WANT YOU - FOR YOU, WE WILL WAIVE THE FEES - THERE's STILL TIME!
I'd definitely play it to the personality of the student.

Son and I heading down to Southern CA next month for his first visit. He's a junior.
This is all new territory. Our oldest only went to JC for a year then started working.

My younger dd is a junior, and we've got a few visits lined up for this spring. We haven't started any sooner because she just wasn't ready. I am not convinced she's ready now, but it is time to start thinking about these things.

Fall junior year. We used days off of school to go so she could see what a 'normal' campus day looked like (opposed to summer when the school is less populated).

I don't think it matters a lot but I wouldn't go to easily accessible schools too early. Most go junior year because application dates start fall if senior year. If a college the might be interested is near a family trip email admissions and ask if your child is younger than a junior
DD did a college tour in her sophomore year because it fit neatly with a business trip if her fathers and it was 1/2 way across the country. The college was fine with it.
