I never thought this would happen. Very proud to be an AXO. www.facebook.com/alphachiomegahq/?fref=nf&pnref=storyIn case you don't want to watch... Alpha Chi Omega's national sorority has created an official policy to allow transgender women into the sorority. I am thrilled.

I don't know if it is policy, but my all-female music fraternity has initiated at least one transgender person, because she's in my daughter's chaptee.

When I first read that I had a negative reaction to it. That surprised me because I didn't think I had any prejudices against transgender folks. My DD's both have transgender friends. I think I felt like it was strange or wrong since they all sleep in a house together. Made me stop and think harder about my understanding of transgender people. I had this sort of prejudice deep down inside that I didn't realize I had.

tuva42 that's kinda cool for you to write. I've had threads cause me to rethink other issues before. Having the varying opinions on this board can really help us open our minds, or evaluate our own thoughts!

I beleive all NPC groups are heading in the same direction if they haven't already announced it. Mine made a similar announcement last month also.

I find it sad to live in a society where acceptance must be mandated; it should be standard practice. Have any fraternities made similar announcements?

My sorority, Phi Sigma Sigma, was founded because women who were of different religions could not join the same sorority at that time. As a national organization, they continue to be inclusive in all matters. They also made a similar announcement, though it was only a matter of making it publicly known.

I have to say I was completely shocked and fully expected when I clicked on the video for them to say the exact opposite... which means I probably have some issues I need to look at too!

Have any fraternities made similar announcements? thinkprogress.org/greek-organizations-are-slowly-becoming-more-trans-inclusive-f476c8394931#.obdqbripzYes, apparently some are starting too. I believe shortly it will not be a thing, I know my 14 year old and her friends do not think a thing about someone being transgender, there are a number of students in their grade who have made a transition over middle school. I can tell you from the comments on FB, when my sorority made it's announcement. It looks like women in their early 30's seem to have the biggest problem. As all the negative comments are from them, and they mostly seem to live in Texas. I believe we are heading in the right direction.

I find it sad to live in a society where acceptance must be mandated; it should be standard practice. Have any fraternities made similar announcements? I think acceptance is growing, and as it is growing it needs some guidance, therefore, mandates. I went to high school in the late 70's. There were no gay people in my school. None. We all know now that wasn't true, just that no one felt comfortable coming out. My kids have both graduated high school in the past 5 years and they had plenty of LGBT friends. Those friends are generally accepted for who they are, rather than any label placed on them. I think that's a lot of progress. Its not perfect, but progress. When we grow up believing something to be true, as in, we believe men are born men and woman are born women, it will take time to learn a new truth and not only to accept it, but become comfortable with it. There will be people who cannot or will not learn this new truth and mandates can help. As my girls' generation ages and begins to raise their own children, there will be less and less need for mandates.
