My youngest is planning on buying a ring soon for his girlfriend. She is SO PRACTICAL she has no rings. Like literally he went into her house and looked in her jewelry box and she has zero rings! We used to sell jewelry and I have some engagement rings left. I think he wants one of those for her but what I have is way too small. It needs to be sized up but I dont' think he'd want to size up two times.
Any ideas on how to trick a size out of her?
He wants to surprise her so no coming out and just asking.

Can he measure her finger while she's sleeping. Or is that too creepy? Lol

I have heard it is often the same/close as one's shoe size.....
Can he enlist the help from her mother?

Do you wear rings? If so, the next time you are around her, pretend that it fell off and sort of make it go towards her so she has to pick it up.
Say something like to her like "Try it on" and then something like "I think I need to get it resized because it keeps falling off" - once she tries it on, you will know if your ring size is the same as hers or if it should be a little bigger or a little smaller - it will give you a general idea - you might even can ask her when she is trying it on "What size do you wear" and then casually mention what size you wear - then change the subject to something else after she gives the ring back to you.
Worth a shot

Unless she's a hard sleeper and he can measure while she's sleeping or he's friends with a *very* good jeweler who can eyeball it, i don't think there's any way to guess.

I've never heard of that rule of thumb and it's not even in the same ball park for me. My ring finger is 4 and I wear a size 8 shoe. I doubt her mother would know if she doesn't have any rings.

I agree - those are both of my sizes too.

Is he going to talk with her parents first? Maybe her mom would have an idea of the size.

If he doesn't know her size for sure, I'd advise against trying to guess it. Better to just give her the ring and get it sized properly after she receives it.

To the OP question: I don't think he should try to size it at all before he gives it to her, because it isn't going to be right and it will need to be re-sized anyhow. He should give it to her and then they go together to a jeweler and have her measured (which he writes down on his phone) and the ring resized. It will only take a couple of days at most.

Oh, and if she literally owns no rings... she probably has no clue of her size. Nor would her mother, I bet.

That formula works for my ring size.

If she is as practical as she sounds, she may have her own opinion of what she wants out an engagement ring. I was that way, I did not want a solitaire diamond because I didn't want anything sticking out. My husband proposed without a ring, because he knew I would be picky about it and if I didn't like it I wouldn't wear it. He DID surprise me by picking it up without my knowledge of when it would be ready and then did the proposal again with the ring.

That formula works for my ring size. LOL! My ring size is simply 1/2 of my shoe size. A size 7 ring wouldn't even stay on my thumb.

My right hand ring finger is a full size bigger. I'm a half-size different from one hand to the other. And the formula given above (shoe size divided by two and add three) works for my right hand (larger) ring finger, but not my left.

Know what's funny? That little math actually came very close. I wear a 7 or 7.5 ring (depending on hand) and a size 7.5/8 shoe. Another way would be to buy a cute ring that's more of a fun ring that's cheap. You find them with the other cheap jewelry at Walmart or Claire's and they have a variety of whole sizes. Pick one that has a symbol or something she likes and present it as a "I saw this and thought of you" kind of gift. Even if she never wears it, odds are she'll at least try to see which finger it fits. If it's too small for the ring finger, he could go up. If it's too big, he can go down.

My youngest is planning on buying a ring soon for his girlfriend. Is this to be an engagement ring? If so, congrats on the addition to the family. If not... well, just happy ring day, I guess.

I'd actually be pretty surprised if any mother knows the size of her daughter's ring finger - again assuming it's an engagement ring. I don't really know anyone who wears a ring on that finger until engagement, so at best you'd be guessing if it's a half or full size smaller than her right hand (assuming she's right handed). I guess on the off chance the daughter has tried on the mother's engagement ring and it exactly fit - but what's the chance of that?

"Can’t sneak away with any of her rings? Tell her that you just heard a fun fact -- if you take your shoe size and divide by two and then add three, it will sum up to your ring finger size."
This does not work for me at all. My shoe size and ring size are the same, though, so you just never know!

If you lived here, I would make you a pretty little cake with a play ring as the center piece.
Then they can go get the real ring sized.
My friend had her dime store ring made into a very pretty pendant that she wears a almost everyday.

My mother in law sells jewelry and will often give the guy a "loaner" setting for the diamond he buys. It's just plain gold with nothing added. It makes it very easy for the girl to get the ring that she really wants. Maybe the jeweler your son buys the diamond from can do that too.

If she literally has no rings she may not know her size. I was that way when I got married. I honestly can't remember my size because it's been 18 years! I recently got sized for a permanent ring/sterling silver splint for my thumb but those measurements were different.
Maybe you could have them come over for dinner. Do you have any old inventory from your wholesale buying days? Have them come over for dinner and say how you are getting ready to sell the rest. Everyone can try rings on and check them out. Or do you have one of those ring sizing things they have at jewelers?

Since the ring will need to be resized, I think he would be safe with size 6 or 7 unless she has very pudgy hands. At least will fit.

My husband gave me a beautiful (and easily sized) diamond band when he proposed, and then we picked a setting out together. Maybe this is an option?
I wear size 3.5 on my ring finger and my shoe size is 6 or 6.5. I don't think any of the math equations I've read are a good way to go.

My youngest is planning on buying a ring soon for his girlfriend. Is this to be an engagement ring? If so, congrats on the addition to the family. If not... well, just happy ring day, I guess. Yes! My oldest is getting married in June. I think they want to kill me. I'm glad they're both boys. He found a ring in her house! He must really have been snooping. lol. He held it up to a tape measure and took a picture. Might be the best he gets. lol. Actually it was not a bad idea (he measured the inside, not the outside). So I have the diameter now. I'll see her this weekend, he said she wears a class ring. I'm going to make some point of saying "do you still wear your class ring!" and then ask to see it. Then make a point of saying "girl how small is your finger anyway?" Between those 3 things I think we can come up with the size. I'm actually the jeweler here!

I wear size 3.5 on my ring finger Whoa. That's really small. I have worked part-time at a jewelry store for several years now and we rarely see a ring finger that size. (On children/teens maybe, but not on grown women.)
