I've only been able to find reference to this on environmental type of websites. Couldn't find reference to it on news websites, so I don't know if it is true. But if it is, I find it so sad and sickening. The bill passed the house on Thursday and it would reverse a ban on hunting bears and cubs in their dens. It would also allow hunters to shoot wolf cubs in their dens during pupping season.
bill to hunt hibernating bears
ETA - I guess there is an actual bill. I found it on the Congress.Gov page.

I swear they are just being as deplorable as they can be. Because "they won". But seriously, they're just acting like gigantic assholes with all of these shitty bills.

I am getting so tired of saying "I hope that's not true." I'm getting even more tired of finding out it is. Please....

Hunters who hunt like this are nothing but cowards. I read this last night. It's just disgusting. I'm really beginning to dislike the Republicans in Congress. Before they were just an annoyance but that is changing to actual dislike. First they pass a bill where the it's ok for the coal industry to dump crap in potential drinking water. Now there is a bill on trump's desk that will make it ok for individuals that have mental problems to the point that they can't handle their own affairs and have to have a designated person to handle the affairs for them be able to own guns. Now what sane person thinks that is a good idea? And now this. Unbelievable.

Totally disgusted but it's confusing this is a federal law but state law conflicts so does that mean that even if it passes they can't do this. One would hope that Alaska itself could prevent this with its own law. One would hope at least. I can't imagine any one passing this.

We should be getting those with mental issues help not helping them to commit a crime. Unbelievable

According to articles I have read, it is a federal law for federal land (National Wildlife Reserves), but the bill maker thinks that these decisions should reside with the state. Hello, it is federal land!

First of all, I don't see this as hunting. Where's the challenge? I guess finding a den? BUT I would need to read a lot more into this topic. What was once land for animals is now being taken over by humans. Is there an over population of animals? Are they starving? Can they be relocated? Would it make sense to decrease the population by allowing this type of "hunting?"
I live in a state where 60% of it is owned by the federal government. When President Obama tweeted a photo of the Bears Ears National Monument and it was another national park, I do pause and wonder does the federal government have a clue about our state?
I'm honestly not sure who I think would do a better job. For now, I trust my state less.

This kind of thing makes me sick. I don't believe in hunting an animal purely for trophy reasons. My husband hunts but not like that. There's no sport in it at all cornering an animal in its den, and some of those animals aren't even edible.

Those hunters would make fox hunters in the UK look relatively reasonable. Time for someone clever to upgrade the slogan "the unspeakable (or possibly the unprincipled?) in pursuit of the inedible" to cover hunters of Cubs and pups in dens ETA: I looked it up. Oscar Wilde "The unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable". Certainly deplorable.

They hunt hibernating wolverines here I'm very much pro hunting, but at least give the animal a fair chance unless you are in desperate need of the meat.

I feel physically sick to think that other human beings think that it is sport to kill an animal that is asleep. They call that hunting? I call it despicable.

I'm confused as to why this is making news. With the technology and resources we have today, how is this much different than baiting deer or turkeys and waiting for them to arrive for a clean shot? Killing for sport is killing for sport. Those people enjoying killing. They don't want to admit it, but they do. They like killing. At least killing a bear while it is sleeping reduces the bear's anxiety and fear. Haven't we all thought that we'd like to go in our sleep if we had a choice?
If someone claims they're hunting for food, one of two things is going on. They cannot admit they like killing (see above) and simply use this as an excuse to be dominant over another species or they are truly hungry and need the food to feed their starving family. In the case of the latter, I'm assuming that these people don't spend a small fortune on hunting gear that could be spent at the grocery store instead (yeah, doubt it). But suppose there is a family that TRULY needs this meat to survive. I'm not going to begrudge them doing it in the quickest, most humane method available.
I'm not a fan of hunting at all. It's not a hill I'm willing to die on and I'm SURE I'll hear from all kinds of Peas whose family NEEDS the meat for survival. So, eh, not going to go there with a fight. But I am going to question why THIS proposal is sooooo horrible and deplorable when so many other things in the "sport" of hunting is okay. As an animal lover, I'd much rather hunters do this than terrify an animal before killing it.

I don't have a problem with hunting if the meat is eaten but to kill pups in their den or a hibernating bear. That just sounds wrong and the types of traps they are using why allow something so Inhumane. And from a helicopter unless the animals are so over populated that they need to thin the herds I just think it's wrong.
