I don't want to sound all weird and panicky about this but every time I go to use it I think of old, brown masking tape. Washi tape is basically decorative masking tape isn't it? I've seen masking tape on things (mostly around the house things) that a year or two later is brown, crackly and has peeled off whatever it was on. When I go to use it on an album cover or on my layouts I always decide not to because I wonder what the condition is going to be in a short while. I bought a 2 pack of WRMK washi on clearance a few months ago and it was HORRIBLE. I could tell it was old because it wouldn't peel off the roll in one whole piece. It kept breaking and coming off in tiny crooked strips. I turned the package over and it was 2015! That is NOT considered old to me and if it was already doing that on the roll what will it do to my paper/photos? Would love to hear your thoughts on this!

Washi is a type of paper in Japan. Real washi tape is made from this paper. It is not masking tape. There are so many tapes out there now that are called washi, but are really just decorative tapes. Sometimes mine will come off in pieces until I get it started, but after that it rolls off in one piece with no problems. Also, real washi is usually not as sticky as other tapes. You can usually pick it up after you stick it down. I buy any tape that I like, I have a tape problem.

Washi tape is one of those things that looks so good when other people use it, but I can never seem to pull off the look. Given my inability to use it I don't own a whole lot.

I have a lot of washi tape. Some is true washi (meaning paper) and it wasn't very sticky in the first place. Some seems to be a bit more adhesive.
So far, luckily, none of my washi tapes have turned brown.
And I'll admit to using just a tiny bit of liquid glue on my washi to ensure that it never does pull up.
(I use liquid glue on most embellishments, to give it that extra bit of hold.

I have a fair supply of washi and still consider it an after thought but like it when I use it. There were a couple that were hard to get started but once I got the tape going it stopped shredding. I haven't had any turn brown or come off the page except for the Bella Blvd brand..it's a little more paper-y so I put extra adhesive under it and it's fine.

I always struggle with washi tape as well. I have quite a few unused and partially used rolls. Think I need to have a clear out!

Washi tape is the new ribbon. You buy it in bulk and it looks all pretty but you barely use it lol
Do you make cards? It's good for that. And also decorating the envelope. I do ad adhesive to it though

I also use washi tape to wrap around the lids of my pill bottles, so I can tell them from DH's at a glance.

I do ad adhesive to it though I do make cards a lot and I actually tend to use it on cards a lot quicker than layouts because I figure people will eventually throw them away anyway lol! A few years ago at a CK convention, my girlfriends and I couldn't GET enough Washi! We bought every roll, every color, every pattern available. I've used it on 0 pages. I HAVE used it on cards, on the handle of my rolling tote (pretty and identifiable!), to decorate a light switch, in my planner, to wrap packages, to decorate a multitude of other things... but never on a scrapbook page. I just can't seem to get it to look right and truthfully, it feels temporary, not permanent to me. But boy, do I have a clear glass container on my shelf full of Washi rolls that looks so pretty!

I only like proper washi. The MT brand from Japan works great (and they claim to be the original washi tape makers with over 100 years of history as a business). But I just don't use it while scrapbooking. I've used the large rolls as temporary wallpaper (it all came off without any issues whatsoever, the paint underneath was intact), love the smaller ones for wrapping gifts and such. But eh, it just doesn't tickle my scrap fancy for some reason. Oh well.
Also, there are some hella cute MT tapes that I've only ever seen in Japan. Japan does paper goods and pretty designs so well. Why is scrapping not a bigger business over there? Can you imagine the beauty of a "Japanese Crafts" monopole with loads of paper collections? Be still, my beating heart.

I could never make it work. I think the slight transparency of it throws me off. Fortunately for me I stopped buying after the second roll. I've used it for other things like marking pages in my planner and putting a bit on my earbuds so I know which ones are mine. So I guess it hasn't been a total waste.

You know what this reminds me of? Do you guys remember those clear dots that Making Memories came out with, then everyone copied, they were kind of the precursor to the epoxy dot. I've bought a ton of epoxy dots, and every time I get ready to use one, I think of those and don't. I always wonder if my epoxy dots are going to be a disaster like these were. A few years ago they were all the rage again when you could get them hexagon and banner shaped (Epiphany Crafts I think?) with matching punches. I bought 2-3 packs...and they're yellow already. When your stamps yellow, it's in reaction to light, so I keep all my epoxies in a dark drawer, and they've STILL darkened.

I remember back when scrapping was big, I would stalk the French peas and check their galleries frequently on 2 peas. There was always something amazingly artistic about their pages.

I love washi and I do use it on scrapbook pages quite a lot. I am very picky about my washi brands though, I love freckled fawn washi and the real Japanese brands. Some of the scrapbooking brands that jumped on the trend just to have a hand in are awful. I am looking at you Little B...I have never had an issue with yellowing, cracking or anything at all really.

I've often wondered the same thing. I try not to use it as a way to adhere anything to a LO because I fear it won't stick after a few years. I also don't make cards with washi because some of my relatives really do keep the cards I make and I don't want them falling apart.
I have a washi problem, though, and have a ton of it! It really does look pretty in a glass jar!
I do use it for a bunch of things including hanging up streamers for birthdays. It doesn't leave a mark on the wall and does a pretty good job of holding the streamers up. I also use it to put notes on my car dashboard. Again, they tape doesn't leave a mark.

I also use washi tape to wrap around the lids of my pill bottles, so I can tell them from DH's at a glance. I find I use it around the house more than for scrapping. I've marked toothbrushes, iPhone cords and plugs, use it as temporary tape to hold things, etc. For crafting I use the foil and glitter types the most especially on gift tags. Maybe one day I'll master using it on my pages.

I use it in place of ribbon pretty much. I don't have a lot of it but what I do have I generally use.
I do like the look of just tearing a piece off and putting it on the layout. I need to do that more often.

I loved the clear ones and they all yellowed and cracked a long time ago. I noticed it when I was packing up some older albums.

I am just now starting to get into washi tape. I never liked it before as it was so transparent. I figured what was the point. Now, I have some Scotch brands from Wal-Mart that are more opaque and I will use on PL cards. I got a couple Christmas ones for my December Daily and loved how they looked. Just last week I bought the "box set" from Michaels. Can't wait to use them, but they stink. I have been airing the box out for the last week.

I use washi tape for a lot of things, but rarely on projects. LOL It is great for making sure my paper is stuck to my mat for my die cut machine...or metal dies for my big shot...or to label things around the house.

I just started buying washi tape and am using it for my planner. I just wish I could find a place where they sold scraps of washi tape so I don't have to buy whole rolls that I might not use up.

I like to use washi tape to tape down a die cut before I run it thru my Cuttlebug. Esp some of the cheap washi I just had to have!

I use my washi tape to hold dies down on my paper when I'm die cutting an image. It comes off without tearing anything. I m not a huge fan but made some Christmas cards with it.

A few years ago my cat knocked my laptop off my table. The poor laptop was busted open in several spots, the screen was popping out of the case, etc. It was bad. But it still work perfectly so I used washi tape to hold all the broken parts together and keep the case on. I got another two years out of that laptop thanks to washi tape!

I don't think it sticks the best and I do worry about that for down the road, but I don't think it will get all dried out and crack like masking tape. Most items sold for scrapbooking are lignin and sulfer free (acid free). So the items deteriorate much slower. And that WRMK tape? Probably age isn't a factor. I've had some tapes just refuse to come off the roll nicely. And I have one from Scotch that I used the day I bought it from Target, from a new display that came off the roll nicely, but absolutely refused to stick to anything! I was using it for a border on a large sign and I ended up stapling it down.
