About 3 weeks ago I sought advice here regarding whether or not to adopt a 5 year old dog who was being retired from breeding. Despite the many recommendations to run far away, we pushed forward and brought her home! And...we love her! She is SUPER scared of everything, because she has lived outdoors her whole life. Thenpotty training concern is a problem only because she WON'T GO. This dog will go 24 hours without a potty break and it's killing me. She will go out in the yard or for a walk 4-5 times a day and we're lucky to get her to go potty. And she has had free reign of the house with zero accidents in the house. So, thatbis a non-issue for the most part. The big concern is building her confidence so she isn't afraid of every loud noise...especially the tv. I haven't watched tv in a week because she is horribly afraid of it. She is so sweet though. Loves the pets and affection, and she has melted our hearts. I know in time she will be braver and happier. I was always anti-puppy because of the hard work involved, but this too is a lot of work! Anyway, I just wanted to be sure to update you all and let you know it is going well. Her name was Angel, but we have been calling her AJ. She still has a sad look about her, but we're working on that!

She's beautiful!! She deserves a family to love her.
In order to conquer her fears she has to be exposed to them in baby steps. Try turning on the tv on mute, then add sound very slowly as she gets used to it. Sit with her on the floor and give her small treats as she experiences the tv, she will learn the tv brings her good things. Treats are the secret to exposing dog to things they fear.
Best of luck to all of you.

Can you imagine what is going on in the sweet little head of hers? Day by day is all you can do. I am glad you got her. I love when a dog gets a good home.

We did try covering the screen with a sheet and just had the sound but she could see the flashing light behind the sheet and wigged out. The other challenge with training is she doesn't like or want treats!! I have tried 4 kinds, even beef jerkey, and zero interest.

Try pieces of carrot as treats. Had similar problems to you with a rescue dog who had not been indoors. She turned out to be the most special dog I ever had. Enjoy your new family member, she is a beauty.

Enjoy your new family member, she is a beauty. We had a golden retriever who loved apples and carrots more than anything. Would start drooling as soon as she heard the vegetable peeler. Might be worth a try! Lovely girl, hope to see a future picture with some brightness in those eyes!

AJ is a golden retriever from her looks, right? We've had two in our lifetime - in fact our extended family has had so many goldens, I've lost count.
Our current golden loves cheese bites and yogurt. I used cheese bites when training both of our boys wears ago. Liver treats from Petsmart were also a big hit - they would smell the liver treat and do ANTYHING you commanded them to do.
Good luck and you are a blessing to this sweetie.
Please keep us posted on how she does.....

Yes, she is 100% Golden retriever. My parents and siblings have all had this breed so that is why I was drawn to her. They are just the sweetest dogs. I have tried cheese and apples, but will keep trying veggies and smelly treats to use as rewards and overall treats. Thanks for all the suggestions!

How about peanut butter? or bits of regular chicken? My dog would go through even a thunder storm for either of these two things.

Forgot I did try PB a few days ago but have been meaning to try again. Last night I tried feeding her a piecebof chicken from my Subway sub, and she STILL turned her nose up. I am truly baffled!

Your dog is a beauty! Congratulations on bringing her home. My friend adopted a country red golden retriever and moved her into a city apt. The dog refused to cross the street, all walks were out to the corner to pee then right back inside. Years later nothing changed.

Thank you for taking in this beauty. My SIL and BIL took in a dog who was very skittish and frightened (also a Golden mix). It took a long time, lots of love, and much patience to bring him around. He is a happy family dog now.
