What about them? Perverts can be anywhere. That alone wouldn't have stopped me (when I was young and had a cute figure). I will say I wouldn't have been laying out alone anywhere other than my back yard. I would have been with a friend only for the conversation, not because I was worried about perverts in a public park. Well, yeah, they can be anywhere. But I am not going to be laying in public, in a state of undress, and not be aware of my surroundings. The perverts can be anywhere - I just dont have to be a target for them. I diagnose you with hyper-ID-channel-emia. LOLOL

I do have friends who call this melanoming. And I will be pissy, nobody should lay out in the sun. Melanoma for the most part can be prevented.
This hits close since my son had a bad mole removed on the back of his neck and a friend has had her skin cancer travel to her lungs.

Yes, we all know that already, especially in Australia...but that doesn't change what something is called. It's being pissy to claim to Australians don't know the dangers of sun exposure - and to give us a little lecture. I'm sure in general we know more about melanoma than Canadians do. We all know smoking can cause lung cancer too - yet we still call it smoking and not "lung cancering" This isn't a thread about the dangers of lying in the sun - we've had plenty of those in the past. This thread is about lying in a bikini in a public park.

I grew up in Ohio--very far from water, and yes, women and girls did and do it. Never gave it much thought.

I don't think so.. I need water to cool off. I guess if I was with a bunch of girls and that was the plan, but no, first I would feel weird by myself and kinda scared if there were guys around... now this of course, would be back in my bikini wearing days.... Now, I would be the only one in the park cause everyone would RUN for their lives!! I shouldn't say scared if there were guys around.. more like weird... but I am pretty shy.. so I could be sitting in a park in a raincoat and still feel weird if by myself.

The British Contingent will be up soon- perhaps they will have a different take as my report on the British urban population's habits may not be typical. On holiday in the UK summer, when a fine day eventually arrived, I was surprised to see London office workers in skirts and stockings, shop assistants in semi casuals or overalls go out into the parks at lunch hour and strip off blouses down to spaghetti type tops to catch some sun. Some just sit on the grass or benches and stick their legs out. This happened in London, in Cardiff and also some smaller Welsh towns. Guys with their shirts off were also fairly common. Lol - yes, whenever it stops raining and the sun comes out everyone strips off and tries to get a tan!!!

Yes it is. What do you call it? sunbathe/sunbathing I'd never heard of sunbaking either, but I like it, makes more sense.

We have a black roof and would get up on the ladder and face the sun, covered in baby oil and sun tan for at least 30 minutes. I had the attention span of a gnat and could only do something so boring for so long before getting too hot and tired of it. My sister and I had happy memories of doing that together many times. We have water near us but it's 10 houses away. We were on the roof!

Here there wouldn't be just one person doing it - the park would be full of them! And not just in bikinis either - many would be completely topless and some would be wearing even less than that. From about April onwards, it is a very common sight in our parks. It did surprise me the first year I was living here, but I've gotten used to it. Many people here don't have the backyard option - apartment living is more common - so the park it is. We are also a long way from any beaches. There are lakes nearby, but people go there to picnic and swim.

We would call it "laying out" "tanning" or possibly less common would be "sunbathing"...and yes in a bathing suit at a park would be relatively uncommon here but in shorts/shirt etc..would be okay. Most people go to a pool if they want to get some sun/layout. yep...laying out

We're only about 20 minutes from a beach here but no-one would bother to go to the beach just to sunbathe. Why do you need water for it anyway? I hate the prickly feeling on my skin so I never just lie in the sun.

I wouldn't do it! However, on the rare days when it is warm enough to get your kit off, it isn't unusual to see sunbathers in our local park. It does have a stream running through it.

I think you have your answer Meg - she's probably a tourist! As Aussies don't generally do this in the park and several people have posted that it's common where they are, so the logical conclusion is that she's from somewhere else and hasn't read the "where to sunbake in Australia" guide.

It's the same in Scotland. Whenever the temperature rises above about 17°C (63°F) and the sun peeps through, the parks fill up with people baring their pasty, winter-white bodies. In fact, in west central Scotland this phenomenon has a specific name: taps aff (tops off). So you could say "everyone was taps aff", or "it was a real taps aff day today".

Scottish people are seriously the best!

This makes me recall a fond memory of sunbathing while in college on the grassy hill behind the girl's dorm. We called it Bonner Beach although there wasn't a drop of water in sight. The boys would sit in their windows of the guy's dorm and catcall down to us (nothing offensive; all in fun).

Well, I wouldn't sunbake. Period. So that's out.
I personally am a pretty modest person, so I wouldn't want to lie out in public anyway.

We we are in the middle of drought cum heatwave conditions here. We have a v large pool with a solar heater. Our break-even water temp is 24 deg C (known as oh F NO!!) it is raining (hooray!) and the air temp today is 21 deg C. I have a second layer on, inside our house! My British husband is happy though. All of the sliding doors and windows are open, except those where gusts push rain in. [. Noel Coward, anyone? Mad dogs and Englishmen.... My late beloved Welsh FIL had my very best face serum applied to his very red Welsh knees when he had a very African sunburn.

Not any more, but I went to college/grad school in two landlocked states, and it was very common there. We used to lie on blankets in the common areas.

PSA for those who don't tan. You do need sun in small doses for vitamin D. So, please do get out for that.
Here in my small town, I see women mowing in swim suits so that they don't get a "farmer's tan". I'm Not really a fan of seeing that, particularly since its most common amongst older women. 😉

Sure...I don't see anything wrong with sunbaking in a park - no need to be near the water to enjoy the sunshine.

I think it used to be more common here, but now not many people "lay out" or "sunbathe" at all that I know of. Unless they are at a lake.
