We use them at school for kids that have ADHD and sensory issues. And if course there are the weighted coats to relieve anxiety in dogs. Lately, I've seen them advertised for adults, and I'm very intrigued. I think it would bring comfort and reduce stress for me. Like the thingy they put on you when you get X-rays at the dentist. I love that feeling. There are lots on Etsy... thinking about buying one. Does anyone have one?

I do not have a weighted special blanket, but I have made some very heavy quilts using fleece and flannel that have comforted adults I know with sensory issues. It might be good for you to try one. Edited: Not one of mine - one off Etsy.

I bought a lap blanket for ds for sensory issues. He doesn't really use it. I should give it a try.

I would love to try one but I am worried I would get too hot. I know I sleep better with my heavy comforter on me but since chemo I have HORRIBLE hot flashes and it leaves me in a sweaty puddle. If anyone has used one for sleep and it stayed cool I would love to know.

I've never thought about it, but I do LOVE that heavy X-Ray cover thing

They aren't to sleep under. The weight puts pressure on the body and makes it feel safe and cozy.
We used them a lot for our students who were ED. The big blankets are expensive, but they don't get thrown like the lap ones or the turtles.

The tech finished the top teeth and was going to develop them (or whatever they do lol!) before moving to the lowers and said she would take the weighted protector off while she was gone. I insisted I was quite fine with it on 😉 I do sleep with lots of blankets and have a particularly heavy quilt so enjoy the feeling of the weight.

The big blankets are expensive, but they don't get thrown like the lap ones or the turtles. You can sleep under them. Studies have shown that the extra weight causes your body to release more melatonin which helps you sleep better. I also get hot, but if it would help me sleep better, I would be willing to crank the air conditioner down even lower…

I know of one that focused on 60 children that was inconclusive.

when I was a kid and teen we had a packing/moving blanket that I used on my bed as a blanket, my step mom hated it because it was ugly but I refused to let her throw it away, I LOVED it because it was really heavy.. I'd love to have a couple of them now, that one of course disappeared after I moved out got married-I shouldve moved it out with me.

If you buy one, please post a review and let us know what you think about it!

Yes, please review. I forget during hot months how comfortable I am sleeping under heavy winter blankets.

If we could figure out how to make a weighted, cooling blanket we would be millionaires!

I'm pretty sure I would like that. I love having a pile of heavy blankets on me in the winter not so much for the heat but for the weight.

DD has one somewhere and it was very useful when she was feeling anxious and stressed. Hers is made from a fabric like neoprene and had chains all the way through it. We all actually enjoyed sneaking turns of it.

Yes, please review. I forget during hot months how comfortable I am sleeping under heavy winter blankets. They're not super heavy but Chinese people use towel blankets in summer, they're literally giant towels but are very pretty with floral designs for example. I grew up with them and find it weird to have no blanket when it's hot out. For some reason even though they don't cool you, they must absorb the sweat because they're really comfortable and easy to wash because they're towels. My mom gave me an old one and of course it's everyone's favorite blanket, my kids just love it and even my dh made fun of it but I've seen him using it on the couch. I looked into buying some online but the only ones I found were for importing, e.g. I'd have to buy 3000 of them. I was thinking maybe I could check out Asian stores around here or maybe go get some the next time I visit home. Anyway I like having the weight to sleep even though it's not super heavy. For those wanting weighed blankets, couldn't you use two blankets in winter? I'm sitting under 2 blankets right now and it's very comfy :-)

My 13-year old DD (who has Aspergers) has one and LOVES it. She has slept under it every night for over 2 years. I don't think I could sleep with it but it does feel good when sitting with my feet up on the couch. But for my DD? Worth every penny! We bought ours from Sensory Goods. You can choose your fabrics. My doctor recommended one for me. I would have tried it but we found a medication combination that works so when it stops working I may revisit the idea. I have a very heavy blanket on my bed and I can't sleep with it on me. It gives me anxiety because I can't get it off fast enough. I know that sounds weird, but I can't get it off quickly enough. I sleep on it now instead of under it and I like it that way. It isn't nearly as heavy as a weighted blanket but it does weigh at least 10 lbs if not more.

I also love the feeling of the xray weighted protector and actually looked into weighted blankets but was aghast at the cost. I found some sites where people have made their own, but then it fell by the wayside.

I tried a weighted blanket (borrowed one) with my son and he HATED it! He still won't sleep with any type of blanket. Weirdly enough, he wears a weighted vest fine. I think I would like one.

I just dug out an old quilt my grandmother gave me when I went to university (a long time ago😜) It weighs 9 pounds. I'm going to try it out tonight and see if it will help me STAY asleep. Maybe I'll double it up lol!

I've never thought about it, but I do LOVE that heavy X-Ray cover thing ^^^ me too! I also like laying in bed underneath a LOT of covers, so I can't really move all that much. I never knew the stuff about releasing melatonin, but I do always sleep really good. Maybe that's part of why!

Like the thingy they put on you when you get X-rays at the dentist. I love that feeling. Me too! My dentist office doesn't use them any more, so I asked if I could buy one. They laughed at me and said I wasn't the first one to ask, but that they'd donated all of theirs.

dd (20) has one and she loves it. She's had it for about 3 years and sleeps with it every night. She really wants a second one for even more weight (that would be heavy!) but she also heats up really easily and knows it would be too hot for her. She does get sweaty at night sometimes and sleeps with her window cracked a lot. I love her weighted blanket - it does feel calming and soothing to have it over me.

If we could figure out how to make a weighted, cooling blanket we would be millionaires! Weight it with water in tubes and run the water continuously thru a chiller. ( I'd say frion like AC but I think it's too dangerous )

I hadn't made the connection before, but this makes perfect sense. Sometimes when we watch movies, DH gets the last quilt which is oversized and heavy. and when he puts it on he always says something about "oh no, it's the heavy blanket, i'll be asleep in 10 minutes" and he is. and there's another old quilt I made that my youngest son says he loves to nap/cuddle with because it is just the right weight. so yeah, I'd go for it!
I know my mom has made quilts with denim that are quite heavy, if the cost of a "real" weighted quilt is scary, you could always make one.

I didn't realize this was a thing. I have always felt better when I am weighted down and surrounded by something and specifically something around my head. I have some OCD issues but never diagnosed with any sensory issues. It give me a feeling of security. That is interesting.

I have a co-worker whose son is ADHD. They invested in a weighted blanket and saw a change in his sleep habits almost immediately. The child who had to be medicated to go to sleep, and even then would not stay asleep for the whole night started sleeping through the night without waking. For them it was a game changer. It's still too soon for them to see long term effects, but they were really happy with the immediate changes.
