I get so excited after watching youtube, get all excited with ideas and inspiration and can't wait to create a layout or six....walk into my room and I get so overwhelmed.
Not with product, too much or anything - just my room is SO messy - I have albums stacked on the floor, boxes of stamps on the floor, on the shelves, crates on the floor with stuff to sell in, stuff to use in, stuff I pack for crops etc.. I also have dies on the floor in boxes cos there is now too many to sit properly on the shelf where they belong. My bigshot is on the floor . I have to step over stuff to get to the other side of the room - my desk only has enough room for my large craft mat to create....otherwise it is so full of stuff - to put away - but I don't know where, lol
I walk out of my room thinking, I have to get in there to tidy up so I can create, BUT I am just overwhelmed with it all - I just walk out and leave it all.
where to start???

Just take a deep breath and pick one small area to clean/organize at a time. Baby steps. Once you start to see some progress you will want to keep going.

I agree with starting with just one thing. Take that pile of albums and find them a home. Or take that crate of things to sell and do whatever you need to do to sell them. Or if all your stamps will fit on the shelves but just need to be organised focus on just that.
Just walk in telling yourself all you have to do is that one thing. Give yourself a time limit. And go for it.

Have you read the book The Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo? It really helped give me advice and permission to get rid of things and focus on what really matters. Slowly but surely, my home is becoming more peaceful and joyful.
My point is, it's not always about organization, it's about getting rid of everything that stifles you and doesn't bring joy. Consider reading the book! (Or listening to it on YouTube free) and then tackle the craft room!

Or... Grab some supplies and get out of that room to use them! If you have been watching inking videos, start there. kWIM?
And maybe after you have played with them, you will feel like setting up a storage system for them. Or maybe the next time you get a chance, pick up a storage binder or a pretty basket for your dies. Then you can focus on just those,
I find that cleaning and creating use different halves of my brain, and if I try to do one when my focus is on the other the only thing I create is a headache.

The big key for me was to get appropriate shelving so things could go vertical and not have to sit on the floor. Once I had the shelves, it was easy to pick things up off the floor and put them on the shelves. Can your room hold any more shelving or some other way to go vertical with storage?

I'm the very same. It sucks! And at the moment I'm putting all my time into my diet me fitness and in the evenings I'm so tired, and if I do have time to craft I just sit in the mess and work on my olw album which is helping me a lot with my weight loss

If you are short on space maybe start with a plan. Are there things that don't belong in there that you could relocate?

Are you using your walls all the way to the ceiling? If so, I'm sorry but you'll just have to get rid of some of your stuff. You've reached capacity.
If there's still wall space, think about taller furniture or shelving that might help you use that space for storage.

My scrap room is one of the areas where it has had the most impact. Trying to organize when you have too much stuff (or too much stuff that you don't love) is a losing battle.

I have to start in a clean space to be creative. By the time i'm done it looks like a hurricane came through. So i definitely get it. You need to figure out if you have too much stuff for your space or just need better storage for your things. Start in small areas or a particular type of item since it's overwhelming. Maybe start by deciding where to store your albums. They are always going to be there and grow in number. Once you get that under control figure out where to put your big items (like your big shot and other tabletop tools). As you do each category i would purge as needed , especially if you know you don't have enough room for everything. It does no good to keep everything if you do nothing. A purge always fuels my creativity.

Ii agree - go in w/an empty basket. Fill the basket w/enough stuff to make one layout or one card or one media journal page. Go somewhere else. Craft. Enjoy. When you go back to the room see if you're more inspired to go through one small area.

Everyone gave you great advice. I'll just add that I can easily do more cleaning or organizing if I have a movie on that I love and have seen a million times or if I'm listening to a podcast.

Lots of good advice given already. I have way more stuff than I will ever use up. I have given some of my stash away. It makes me happy and almost all of what I have left I like so I just started giving myself a 15 minute frame to clean/organize then I turn on music and work on a project. Those right now are finishing up projects I have never completed.

Either before I start crafting or at the end of the crafting session, I take 15 minutes to go through a box or bin. Outside my craft room, I keep boxes for donated goods and a huge trash bag. When they get filled, out they go!

It makes me happy and almost all of what I have left I like so I just started giving myself a 15 minute frame to clean/organize then I turn on music and work on a project. Those right now are finishing up projects I have never completed. This is what works for me. You can stand to do anything for 15 to 20 minutes. Set a timer. When it goes off, you are free to grab a few things to take to another room to make something. 15 minutes a day will get that room cleaned up, but you also need to think about how to organize what you have. I recently moved halfway across the country. What worked for storage in my old home is not working in my new one. I am having to start over and figure out how to deal with it. There are still boxes waiting to be unpacked. Yes, I kept more than I should have. However, I know there is a way to organize and store it all. It just takes time. 15 minutes a day (or a few times of 15 minutes each per day) of applying myself will get it into shape. I am having to reconsider what I need to get to help with organization and storage. I have been buying cube storage made for scrapbookers. I use a coupon at Hobby Lobby and buy another cube each visit. Sometimes I drag my husband along so we can get two. I have only a small amount of wall space due to the layout of the room that is my scrapbook room. One side of it is stairs. One wall is mainly windows. Another has arched openings. That leaves me only one wall for organizing and storage. After thinking about it for awhile, I finally decided what will help. I am making a scrapping table that will sit out in the room instead of against the one wall. The supports of the table are going to be made up of those cubes. That will add both storage potential and scrapping space, since the one wall is already used up with some shelves, a desk, and a lamp. The top of the table will be made of laminated closet shelving. It is easy to feel overwhelmed, but you can give yourself permission to clean, sort, and organize for just 15 minutes at a time. Baby steps will do it. Good luck!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, ideas, support and help.....I walk into my room, bend down to pick up a couple of albums to put away on a shelf - no more room, lol I have vertical shelving, which is full. I have a desk, with a set of drawers underneath - which are full I know I need to purge and clean out, its just that there is no room to put stuff while I go through other stuff. I will start small, and sell the stamps I have in a crate - that will be my first step. 2nd step - to take to kindy the bag of unloved paper and left over diecuts etc 3rd step - a glass of wine and then will start again. I have moved rooms, my other room was bigger, and I am now in a smaller room, and yes, I admit, I have been buying - but using my goodies as well! Thank you - I love you all

I am having the same issues as the OP, and only go into my room to get supplies, or to drop supplies onto the table and run out the door so I don't have to look at the mess any longer, lol. I didn't really realize that the bolded text is my problem!! What I'm doing is going into that room when I want to be creative, I get overwhelmed by the mess, and it kills my creative urge. I need to go in there at a DIFFERENT time to actually do the cleaning / straightening up. Then when I DO feel creative, I'll be okay.

I understand where you are coming from. My space is small as well, and I use it to house my sewing machine as well as knitting supplies. Admittedly, it is a case of too much stuff in too little a space, but I have found a few things that have made a difference.
I put some of my less often used supplies in labelled bins and store them on top of the Ikea Kallax I use for storage. This has allowed me to go vertical and freed up a lot of space for me. Also, just putting things in bins helps. You can stack things without danger of wrecking anything...stuff like spare albums, speciality supplies, extra adhesive, seasonal supplies, etc. If it isn't something I use everyday I find it's not a huge deal to unstack the bins every once in awhile to get what I need. Also, I have found that packaging is a HUGE waste of space. Lots of the products come packaged with the cardboard backing and the plastic bubble front, things like that never store nicely in my drawers and taking them out of their packages can be a huge space saver. If I'm worried about keeping things together often a zip top bag or envelope is a smaller solution.
Are there things that you could store elsewhere? Perhaps finished (or in progress) albums could go elsewhere in your home on a bookshelf?
A Raskog cart from Ikea might be another solution, especially since you mention your desk is small. You can use the top to store everyday things you need and the bottom two levels for more storage. Put it next to your desk when you work and it can easily roll elsewhere when you're not working. This also works well if you want to go to another area and scrap...just wheel your stuff in and out of your room.
Good luck...it's a common problem! I will be right there with you spending 15 minutes a day organizing more.

I know this feeling, so well!!! I would say like others have mentioned already just start with a section of the room. The other thing is to get an idea for what items you already have and try to set up a functional organizational system that will work for you and your space. Finally, clutter can really get you down. Try to cut down your collection and only keep the products you really love and part with the rest.

Wookie Mouse's Organizational Challenge really helped me. I even printed it out & put the pages in page protectors so I would be able to use it again. I checked off each challenge w/a dry erase marker. Really worked for me. I think she used to be a Pea. Is she still here?

Would it be possible to store your albums in another area of the house? I have two ladder shelves that house 35-40 albums each. No way could I store them in my scrap space. Maybe even a few in different rooms. I look at them more often if they aren't in my scrap space.

I agree about the albums. I have most of mine in a spare bedroom and the ones I inherited from my Mum are actually in my walk in wardrobe because that's the only place that has deep shelves suitable for 12x12s. The only albums I keep in my craft room are the ones I'm working on.

I did a room overhaul clean and purge in January. I basically started in on corner of my room and worked my way around the circumference of it.
I did it it over a period of time and although it was a huge amount of work it was so worth it!
I've much more productive and inspired to create things now and I don't feel overwhelmed!

Like others, I cannot scrap in the mess. I only scrap at crops. If I was you I would grab what I need to do some of whatever I want to do and take it to my kitchen or dining room or living room or wherever I can find unencumbered table space and do my creative thing. I would work on cleaning, organizing, purging and sorting at another time.
