The thread about hot rollers made me think of this question.
My mother has always had a great eye for fashion. She could always walk into any store, find a great outfit that fit her perfectly, find great accessories, do her make-up expertly, hair looked fantastic, etc.
Me? Uh, no. I'm pathetic. I have zero fashion sense. And I'm terrible at applying makeup no matter how many times I've tried. And though I have nice thick hair (though now I have some gray, *frown*) I cannot make it do what I want it to do. It's like I would need three more hands to do it right.
But then my daughters? Gorgeous & gifted. Both have different styles, but they are good at looking fashionable. Make-up? Check. Hair done? Piece of cake!
So, do you think I'm the anomaly and that being good at being fashionable is passed down from mother (or female caregiver) to daughter? Or do you think it is something that you are either born with or aren't?

I feel the exact same way as you. I see pictures of my mom when she was young after she was on her own and then married. She rocked the fashions in my opinion.. I seen mini skirts and boots on her.. (probably not mini like we picture the 60s.. REALLY short) but to me it looks mini. She always looked pretty dang good in old pictures. Which was a FAR cry from where she grew up.. very very poor in the country.. was embarrassed even at a country little school.. that poor.  My 17 year old always looks cute.. except the mismatched socks she wears all the time.. lol.. but in general she has a good sense of fashion.. My six year old dd ... well she hasn't developed it yet.. if it has stripes on the shirt, shorts and socks.. it matches! DS who is 19.. eh.. tee shirt/jeans kid.. no sense. Then there is me. I just do my best. |

My mom has always been fashion fabulous, still is at 65. That trait has definitely trickled down to my sisters and I.

My mom when she worked in an office always looked put together. Now she runs her own business and she rarely ever gets dressed up. I work in an office and I like to think that most days I am pretty put together. But when I was a SAHM, I rarely looked put together. My 14 year old DD sometimes dresses up and sometimes dresses down. She can be put together when she wants to be.

Definitely, but she worked at it. I can be, but I just don't care that much. I'd rather be comfortable than fashionable. I don't look like a hobo, but I'm all about cargo crops and cute tops. That I wore a dress today on the first day of classes is a minor miracle.

No, my mom never was, and I am not either. One of the reasons I am glad I don't have daughters - I would have no idea how to style hair, or what clothes to dress them in.

Nope. My Mom is not fashionable. I am not either. I like my jeans and comfortable T's. I do not have a lot of shoes. I do not work in a job that requires fashionable outfits. However, I'm not monochromatic like she is. Most of her outfits will be mostly one color. My Grandma does it too. I refuse to go that route. I see girls' clothes and am usually grateful that I have boys.

I can pull it together once in a great while and it makes me feel good when I do. However, I'm not great at bargain shopping so usually if I "have" to have an outfit, it's last minute at full price.
Most of the time, I'm put together at all. I think my mom did ok and my 17 yo DD is pretty fashionable. She's not always into the trends of her peers and dresses modestly, but she does pretty well in that category.
Luckily, there's Youtube now to show how to do makeup and such.

I enjoy picking outfits and doing my hair and makeup. I grew up in the '60's and I think both men & women dressed nicely when they left home. Hats , gloves etc., I think in some respects they had more opportunity to look nice and we live a much more relaxed lifestyle and clothes more casual.

My mum was relatively fashionable. My grandma, on the other hand, was so, so stylish, even when she was elderly. I still wear some of her clothes and accessories. I'm sure i inherited my love of clothes from her. I also think my 3 year-old niece has the gene. Every time she sees me she wants to talk about clothes and critiques my outfit. She definitely doesn't get it from my sister, who's pretty much a jeans and shirt person most days.

My mom was definitely not a fashionista. As a consequence, neither am I, but I am more "put together" than my mom was. My daughter, on the other hand, can pull together outfits really well. She's definitely got some sort of "gift" in that department that neither my mom nor I possessed. I would bet she got that "gene" from my mother-in-law--the ultimate 85 year old fashionista!  |

My mom was always fashionable. But she was only 16 years older than me so she was very young.
I am fashionable. My hair and make up is always done and so are my nails/toes.
I like to look good for the day and my dh.

My Mom? No. Me? No. I'm a casual jeans and tennies kind of girl. But I will say that my clothes are always neat and clean and fit properly.

ok..... Daughter standing over my shoulder as I read this thread title. I said it out loud and she replied.
"Yes when she worked. Had to be fashionable for her line of work. She stopped working got tired of fashion and went BLACK!"
My mom was fashionable as long as she was in clown school. As far back as I can remember my mom had no since of fashion and always had the wildest prints and brightest colors. she drove me crazy...... To the point of not wanting to be seen in public with her a lot of the time...
She always said she hated white and black because she had to wear them for work.
I really started wearing black because it is not color. I really hate clothes and the less I have to deal with shopping for clothes the better. I have 4 kinds of clothes. shorts, long pants, tank tops, and short sleeve shirts(mostly for dress up occasions during the winter) I have one dress...
My mom made most of her clothes and would buy the brightest ugliest material to make clothes out of.... she made a lot of my clothes growing up and they were ugly and bright too... but she made the most beautiful clothes for my daughter. non of them were too bright and ugly. she did use color and patterns but nothing like she wore though.... But my daughter has always liked wild socks. The brightest and the weirder the better.

My mom, absolutely not. She is a nurse who worked the night shift for twenty years and never saw the need to wear makeup, jewelry or fashionable clothes. She has literally had the same hairstyle since 1984.
Me, I've tried as hard a possible to be the opposite. Sometimes it's hard though. Even when I'm casual, my mom will snip at me and ask why am I so "dressed up". Oh gee, Mom, maybe I don't feel like looking like I just rolled out of bed and put on mom jeans and a threadbare t-shirt. Sheesh.

Oh gosh yes, my mom was (and still is) a very beautiful, striking woman who knows how to dress and do her make up to highlight herself. It was nice as a kid to have the most beautiful mom, if a bit weird at times to see male teachers, strangers at the store, etc hitting on her all the time, lol.
Apple fell far from the tree...I can dress well, and look pretty nice when I put in the effort...approximately once a week! My mom never, ever went out without full hair and make up, I rarely do any hair or make up. I do know how to do it all, I just don't care as much as she does I guess? I'm not nearly as beautiful, maybe that is why?
Of my dds (16 and 13) my oldest could care less- no makeup, no fashion sense at all. My youngest is very like my mom, all about looking nice! I actually make my oldest wear decent clothes, because it's true in our society that how you look does matter, so she needs to be presentable if she is at school, etc.

Neither my elderly mom nor I are inherently fashionable. Her generation had limited access & variety in fashion & strict unwritten dress codes, so she often looked stylish during her youth/early adulthood by default. Now that a plethora of styles/designers/etc. are available & society is less formal, my lack of fashion sense is definitely exposed!

My Mom was and still does dress very, very well. Her home is immaculate and she works FT as an RN and helps my sister with her two children. My mom has her stuff together! Me? I make sure to always have my hair and makeup done. I look cute in the clothes I have but I'd love to have a bigger clothing budget!  |

Eh, my mom was not really all that fashionable. We didn't have any money and she wasn't really into fashion or shopping. It was buy whatever fit and was cheapest and that's how I grew up. While I'm not materialistic in any sense of the word, I like to buy a little bit nicer clothes. And I regularly look online for fashion ideas and outfits that look cute. It does NOT come naturally to me but I work hard at trying to at least look ok and not embarrass my girls. My mom also never taught me how to apply makeup so I suck at doing makeup and rarely wear it due to super sensitive skin. I've tried youtube tutorials and Pinterest but nothing has helped. I just cannot figure out how to do it right.
My ds matches like colors but doesn't really care. He's 11. My dd's will be 10 soon and I have one that is a TOTAL fashionista. She does pretty well and putting herself together. The other one has slowly been getting into it as well. This year going school shopping was SUPER fun. I took the girls out shopping and we had a GREAT time. I just needed more money. LOL When it comes time to do the whole makeup thing, I WILL take them somewhere that will teach them how to apply it appropriately.

My Mom fashionable? No, but then we lived in a small town where hardly anyone was "fashsionable". There were a couple nice clothing stores in town, but mainly the wives of doctors, lawyers and buinessmen shopped there. But my Mother was always, well groomed. Unless she was deathly ill, she rose everyday to get herself ready for what the day might bring; hair done...she only wore make-up when "going out", but always a freshly ironed dress in a pretty print. Always. Always.
I have no fashion sense, but don't blame Mother. I also have no ability to decorate. Haven't really missed either of those things!
