I started watching YouTube videos that were listed on the other thread and I came across gelli plates. Does anyone have experience with this? Any advice? I'm thinking of buying a 12x14 plate and roller. I mainly want to use it for layout backgrounds and photos mats.

I love them! I started by making background papers for handbound books, but now do it as a quick stress relief chance to play with supplies. A few prints have found their way into frames.
It's surprisingly not messy, and doesn't require a lot of room. Setup and cleanup can be very fast.
There are recipes on the internet about how to make your own, custom size plates. I have yet to try it. I recently bought a round one and it's been interesting.

I love my gelli plates. I have a couple of the smaller ones for printing PL cards, and the big 12x14 one. Like anonrefugee mentioned, they aren't all that messy and are so much fun! I bought the Stampendous Creative Palette prior to going all out and purchasing the gelli plate. It was a mistake. The plate was too thin (not squishy enough) and didn't work well for all the great techniques you can do with a gelli plate. I see that there are a couple of companies out there who have 12x12 plates, one was new at Creativation (CHA) this year, I believe, and is called Gel Arts. I also see that Speedball has a gel printing plate available on Amazon. I'm not sure of the quality of either of these products as I haven't seen them in person, but the Gelli Arts brand plates are amazing. ETA: It's also really fun to print up a bunch of cardstock, or deli paper and then die cut it for embellishments. I made some autumn coloured prints and cut them into leaves for a fall layout this year and I was really happy with the result.

Patter , do you use them in your mixed media? Occasionally but they are not my "go to." Stencils and finger painting are my go to. I have the 4x6 and the 8x10. Those are both great sizes. I personally wouldn't want anything larger.

I'm 2 years late to the gelli plate scene, but I recently bought the 12x14 for backgrounds, the 3" circle/square/triangle and 5x7 for cards. I love mixed media, but I'm a total control freak. Most people love the spontaneity they get, but with a little thought, it lets me control my layers to get that random look, but without any actual randomness. I'm beyond in love with them. I was on the fence until I saw someone use them with distress inks. That was a total game changer!! It's blending heaven!

I haven't used them but I've seen posts on balzerdesigns.typepad.com/ I'm not sure if she still has a class on using the gelli plate.

When the Gelli plate craze came out I did not jump on that one. I waited a couple of years. Gelli Plate printing is so much fun. It is kind of an expense to get started because the plates can be a bit expensive. Then it is a frugal fun hobby after that. I really like my plate.

I have them in a couple of different sizes. I like to use them with tissue paper, and then I use the tissue paper in my art journals. It is fun to just play and see what you get.

Ohh, I love mine! I have to warn you, though--it's addictive! I mostly make backgrounds for art journaling pages or LOs or for making cards. Ohh....I haven't tried tissue paper yet, but that's a great idea for mixed media pages!!!

If anyone was looking for the clear plastic box frames one video used for their DIY plates, I saw them on clearance at ACM. $2 for 8x10 and 8.5x11, $5 for 11x14.

My sister recently gifted me a Gelli Plate and a brayer. Then she invited me over to her house to "play". I am hooked! I love that once you purchase the Gelli plate and brayer, you can use very inexpensive 'found' items and cheap craft paint. I do recommend the book "Gelli Plate Printing" by Joan Bess for lots of ideas, tips and hints.
