My husband was just put on generic for mostly chronic pain...of course he's on day 3 with some side effects and freaking out thinking he should stop taking it. He's use to instant relief of a pain pill, but wants to not have to take them. Experiences?

My rheumatologist prescribed it to me to help with my RA pain. I take another pain med on a daily basis but the RA was winning so she gave me the Cymbalta hoping it would help. I took it for about 3 months - it didn't do anything for me, no side effects but no effect on my pain at all, nothing. Too bad, I was looking for something other than Hydrocodone type drugs. I hope it works for your dh.

I took it for years for depression. It worked well but made me constipared a lot. It was also very hard to get off. I gradually reduced my dose to get off it but had a lot of flu type symptoms while trying to get off it. I think it is usually used as an anti-depressant.

I'm on it for maintenance for depression. I ran out of it recently (something happened and I didn't notice it) and was 3 days without it before I could get it refilled. Really stupid of me. I turned into a raging bitch during those 3 days. I mean really nasty and was mad at the world for everything. I'm sure it was going off of it so abruptly. As soon as I got it refilled I was fine and more like myself again.
So if you are on it (as with any antidepressant) it is imperative that you don't stop abruptly but follow your doctor's careful advice about tampering down gradually to get off of it. I'm also on the generic.
If your husband is only on day 3 I think he needs to give it some time for his body to get used to it. I personally have no side effects from it.
However if his side effects are troublesome and worry him, he should call his doctor and discuss them with the doctor.
As far as constipation goes that completely vanished once I started on the whole foods, plant based diet 3 years ago. Basically we don't (we Americans) eat anywhere near enough fiber. If you are suffering from constipation try eating whole grains. As far as bread goes make sure it's made from a whole grain-it could be whole wheat, whole rye anything like that. It has to have the word "whole" in it. Multi means nothing. Same with pasta. We are so used to eating white pasta. I now eat whole wheat pasta. Yeah, it's brown but once I tried it and got used to it I actually much prefer it. The white pasta now tastes like mush.
And don't juice. If you juice you are throwing away all of that wonderful fiber. Eat your veggies and fruits whole.

I was on it for years for pain. It did help dull the pain. I was also put on Neurontin at the same time. One of them made me extremely tired and I had a hard time getting passed that, but once I did both meds together really seemed to work well.
