I'm not even sure that's the right way to phrase that question I worry constantly that our external hard drive will fail and I will lose all the photos I have stored on it. I also still have photos backed up on CDs, and I really need to get my photos backed up somewhere on the cloud (a cloud? Is there more than one? ) I think I get some storage for free, or at least pretty cheap, from Amazon, because I'm a Prime member, but I am not sure how it works. What site do any of you use?

Mine are on Shutterfly. I want to upload to Amazon, too. Who has the time?!

I use Flickr to automatically upload photos when I am connected to wifi. I have to mess with it sometimes to reset it to upload. But I also just try to leave photos uploaded wherever I print them (persnickety prints, mpix, etc). I've stored a few on Dropbox, some on Google Drive. Just wherever or whenever I think, "i really don't want to lose this". I also have used External hard drives in the past, but have gotten out of the habit of keeping updated. Sometimes I just email a few.
I am not sure about Prime, but that sounds like a good option. See if there is any way to automatically connect to your phone (if you have one), maybe thru an app?

only in the sense that I've uploaded most of my photos to Snapfish or Shutterfly or Walmart to print...I probably SHOULD find a single place to store them all in the cloud. I have a LOT of pictures on my computer - they are backed up to an external drive, DS has a copy of 2016 and before on his external drive as well, and I do use Carbonite but my picture library is 140 GB and my scrapbook album library (scanned layouts - a work in progress) is 14.3 GB - yikes.
I'm looking at Google Drive - my only concern is how private it really is? Any feedback on that?

Using multiple backup places is good because EHDs and CDs/DVDs can fail, services come to an end etc. I back up everything to an EHD and photos from my phone go to icloud. I also back up photos to Dropbox and Flickr.
You get free photos storage as a Prime member. Flickr also offer 1Tb free. I pay extra for Dropbox storage but know all my files are safe.

I used Google Photos for a while, but they suddenly halved my file size. Yes, I was on the right settings, no I didn't change anything. One day they were my full size, the next a third smaller and I only noticed because they didn't fit properly on my pages.
I've not used Google Photos since, and while Drive is private, once you start loading them up, they'll drop your file size.
I did try Amazon Prime and I didn't like that I could definitively say they don't reduce file size too, so I now stick with my external hard drive, and spread some between free Dropbox and Microsoft One Drive.

Mine are on the cloud but there are no naked ones of me to my knowledge.

I use google photo (not drive) and have not had any issues and it is free. There is a free class at modernphotosolutions.com if you want more info.

I use Google Photos and Amazon Prime Photos for my phone photos. Just download the app and/or the desktop uploader and you are set to go. It's super easy and works while you are doing other things. The free class at ModernPhotoSolutions.com that caangel mentioned is great to get started. Her podcast is excellent too.
