Some of the challenge videos have been cute...like the one with President Bush link If you want to do it, that's great. I don't like peer pressure to donate to any great cause. My DD's friend tried to talk her into doing the Polar Bear Plunge this winter, but she declined.

I did it earlier in the summer, before the ALS made it theirs. I challenged three people. One asked for an extension and said she'd do it. I prompted her twice and she never did it. I posted that she was to donate to Animal Welfare League in honor of my beloved Princess and included a picture. She never did. It's SO's cousin. He has informed me we don't have to talk to her any longer. Well that's totally the opposite of the spirit of this kind of fundraiser. I completely disagree with your attitude. The goal is about raising awareness for a cause and donations are nice too. You can extend the challenge and hope for a response. If they don't respond, oh well. But your attitude is completely strongarming someone into giving and creating family drama and a rift between your SO and his cousin because she chose not to participate.

I didn't do it when I was originally challenged although I am sending a donation, but the more I see it the more I plan on doing it when I get home tonight. Love some of them ... Charlie Sheen, George Bush, the Buffalo Bills. All raises awareness for a great cause. And I see stuff was stupider than that on FB everyday.

I am loving it!
It is raising awareness and raising funds without a slick, expensive ad campaign . People are having fun. My favorites are of regular people doing it with their kids - although the one President Bush posted today was awesome.
Give what you can even if it is a prayer or healing thoughts for someone who has had their life stolen by this terrible disease.

I wish they could track where donations come from. I think it's dumb. I imagine most donations are coming from people affected in some way by ALS and celebrities. Of course your donations are up when celebrities are donating way more than $100. And I've seen many celebrities participate.
It says nothing about the other hundreds of people on my feed who I'm sure didn't donate a penny.
To each his own. I haven't participated and haven't donated (I only donate to certain charities each year unless there is a humanitarian crisis); but money is money and hopefully this charity does something good with the extra funds.

most of the videos Ive seen have also donated.
love the videos and don't care if they are annoying, there is much more annoying ignorant crap on Facebook than this.
2 days ago it was reported they are at 13.3 million, much more than the 1.7 they received last year during the same time. Go go go!

I like them and I think they are fun to watch. I've known three people in my life that died from ALS. The wife of a good high school friend, a friend who I met in acting class and a local reporter who I liked. It's a horrible disease and any awareness and money that can be raised is a good thing despite how they came to the idea or if people find them annoying.
My favorite so far has been the Foo Fighters and then Ben Affleck/Jennifer Garner.

Everyone has their "pet" charity or awareness raising walks/runs/etc. that they like and I would think if that's your attitude toward this one, then I would doubt those that know you would "put you on the spot". I think you just have to be in the spirit of the whole thing. Being put on the spot in the last thing I would have thought of in being called out in the spirit of this challenge, but that's just me.

I completely see where you're coming from. That said, if this "challenge" only brought in a few thousand dollars, I think it was worth it. Heck, if it only brought in a fraction of that it is still worth it, even if every red penny came from a celebrity. In that regard, I think it's brilliant. They raised money and awareness. (My husband and I had to google ALS.) However, my newsfeed is full of these! I hope everyone who plans to do one does it soon because they're getting boring, hahaha.

They have raised millions for ALS so wherever it started, or whomever started it was a fundraising genius.

I saw this video earlier and it made me bawl! The beginning is just a guy goofing around and then he shows you his reality..wow.

Is it really raising awareness, though? Do you think anyone who's actually heard about this challenge or taken part in it has looked up what ALS actually IS? I bet a VERY small percentage of people who hear about this challenge on FB or take part in it have actually learned anything about it or even actually donated money to an organization supporting/researching ALS. ------------- Yes. Because look at how many people have become aware of what ALS even is. It isn't disease that gets much media play, but has been featured both locally and nationally. And to give another perspective from a previously featured link.... www.upworthy.com/the-last-ice-bucket-challenge-you-need-to-see-and-you-really-should-see-it?c=ufb1

Seriously? Then don't. Just as don't read or ignore a thread that annoys. Just as you get to make choices each and every day about what you participate in or not, in real life and online, you have that power to decide for yourself.
I get that it's like the online version of a chain letter. Obviously doesn't mean that others aren't free to send to you.

Totally fine to think dumb. But I'll truly bet much more significant in donated dollars over say, direct mail seeking donations for the cause. And I would also bet from a marketing perspective, you would be very, very wrong in your assessment of only those affected in some way donating. The population of those afflicted, is just not that large to support what they have received so far.

I'd rather get a million ice bucket challenges than one more f [HASH]%ing invitation to play Candy Crush or some other stupid FB game.
I did the challenge AND donated $100. A friend is walking in the ALS Walk in Phoenix, so I donated to support her.
