I enjoy seeing the videos. I think it's great that celebrities are getting involved too. Anything that brings awareness is a good thing in my opinion. Watching ALS take over the life of my young, active mom makes me bias though. I hope they find a cure, or a way to slow down the progression of the disease in my lifetime.

I did it earlier in the summer, before the ALS made it theirs. I challenged three people. One asked for an extension and said she'd do it. I prompted her twice and she never did it. I posted that she was to donate to Animal Welfare League in honor of my beloved Princess and included a picture. She never did. It's SO's cousin. He has informed me we don't have to talk to her any longer.

And yes, I'm tired of seeing all the videos of people doing it. Enough already.

I had to stop reading at #2. It's an awful disease to witness. I could see the pain in my mom's eyes.

Think what you like but read this from Forbes, lol. (As a wife of a non-profit fundraising exec, THEIR organization is probably KICKING themselves for not thinking of this.) www.forbes.com/sites/matthewherper/2014/08/19/think-the-ice-bucket-challenge-is-stupid-youre-wrong/From a fundraising perspective, this has been gold for ALS. And heck, people are talking about the disease. Doesn't get much better than that. From link: "the ALS Association has since said that it has raised $15.6 million as a result of the challenge, nine times what it normally raises in the same time frame. Another ALS charity, Project ALS, told the Washington Post that its donations were 50 times normal. ALS TDI, another ALS charity, says that has raised $580,000 since the beginning of August, 10 times what it normally receives." BOOM.

I would probably do it. why not? people have done crazier things. just as long as it brings more awareness. I wouldn't challenge anyone else to do it. I don't like calling people out like that.

You basically made her look like an asshole if she refused, so she was pretty much bullied into it. Sure, she could have just donated, but maybe she didn't like her cousin's girlfriend demanding she make a donation in honor of her departed pet? Unless you're kidding about not talking to her...Your reaction is pretty harsh

I don't agree with this either. I would never donate to a charity not of my choice because someone dared or bullied me into it. She was probably happy that you stopped trying to get her to do it.
The whole point is you should do the challenge AND donate. Doing the challenge is the chicken way out.

I did the challenge and donated earlier this summer. I wasn't "called out" either, someone in my extended family did it and was looking for people to challenge, so I volunteered.
I'm more sick of people incorrectly assuming that if you do the challenge you are trying to get out of donating. That isn't true, you still donate but it is only $10. Or more, if you feel so inclined.

I think the ice bucket challenges are fun primarily because it is for a great cause. So, whatever it takes to get funding for ALS, then go for it. One of the challenges I saw was a man with ALS whose daughter poured the ice water over him. It has been fun watching so many from the Dallas Stars hockey club participating. I am sure that many other teams are also participating.
I have a friend that did the challenge for donations to the Shriner's for funding of their burn hospital.
While I might not watch as many of them as I did before, I still think it is a fun way to raise money.
I would NEVER try to shame someone into it though. I would challenge them and that would be the end of it. It is up to the person being challenged to determine if they want to participate.

Yeah, there's more boring details to the story. ZZZZ. At the end, it was the "straw" for SO. I think he used it as the excuse to finally cut ties. I just shrugged and moved along.
But the other people challenged came through in a fun and big way, so yay for everyone!

I don't necessarily think it raises anyone's awareness for ALS. It raises money. But the videos I see are all giggling teens and adults so focused on looking good or getting it right that they are only concerned with the video. Rarely does anyone mention the disease and in a couple of videos I saw, 20-somethings were asking what "AKS" stood for.

I'm confused, I thought it was an either or thing...either donate or do the ice bucket challenge. If that's the case, how are they making all this money? As a side note, has anyone seen Brandi Glanville (Real Housewife of Beverly Hills) take the challenge? I thought her being stupid was an act but guess not! This is priceless! Her comment on twitter was that "it hurt but was worth it". www.youtube.com/watch?v=616EljuNYH8

I think it's great that people are donating. I also think it's really crappy to put pressure or call someone out for not donating. I do not appreciate being told where to donate my money. You don't know this person's circumstances. Maybe she donated to a cause that was important to her? Maybe she wasn't able to donate due to financial circumstances?

You donate regardless of doing the challenge or not.

Then they are mistaken because every video I have seen is a $10 minimum donation. When Matt Lauer challenged Brian Williams, Martha Stewart and Howard Stern Howard immediately donated $100 to get out of doing the challenge.
Charlie Sheen poured $10,000 over his head and said that is what he's donating to ALS.

"It is $100 if you don't do the challenge, $10 if you do. You donate regardless of doing the challenge or not."
This is the part that I think it dumb. If people want to dump ice water on themselves to get attention, then go right ahead. If people want to donate to ALS, then go right ahead, but the perception that you "have to" donate if you don't do the challenge is just stupid. DS was "nominated" yesterday, and while he thinks the whole thing is dumb, he will do it anyway because everyone else is.
With a lot of different things I have been seeing on the news recently, I really wonder when we became a society of bandwagon jumpers. EVERYONE has to do the ice bucket challenge, EVERYONE has to support breast cancer causes over all other cancers, EVERYONE has to have an opinion about certain cases that are in the news without knowing all of the facts (Trayvon Martin, the kid in MO). It gets old, and it makes us all look like we have no ability to think for ourselves and make our own decisions.

Oh, that makes more sense. I've seen some challenges on twitter but I've never seen the dumping of ice water as well as the $10 donation being mentioned.

Maybe she supports other charities of her choice. Maybe she didn't have the money. Or maybe she just thought it was plain stupid.
