you can't come to terms with the frustration over the perfect paper you just HAD to purchase for a particular layout turns out to not work with the photos after all and it's a specific theme that you won't use for anything else. I've been looking at this layout for a trip to Washington DC for a few years (yes years) now and I just can't finish it! I take it out, redo it, put it away for another few months, repeat process. I always said I was a SLOW scrapper. lol
What gets you stuck on a layout?

I usually scrap multi-photo. It's where I'm comfortable because there isn't as much room on the page to work with after the photos are added.
But, when I only have one photo, or a couple of small photos, I get stuck for just what to do with the rest of the page. I don't have a large stash of product to stick on my pages, which means I usually have to get creative somehow. And the solutions don't always come to me quickly.

I feel your pain. Some pages just fly together and others seem to take forever. Just this morning I was staring at a piece of pp I have had for awhile, but just pulled out last night--again--because I thought it would be perfect for a particular photo. Of course yesterday I cleaned off my scrap space (that's how I found this pp), and now I can't remember what happened to that photo I thought it would be perfect for... It is like constantly looking for the other shoe... pas2, I don't know what it is about the pp that makes it not work with your photos? If it is colour, some people reprint the photo(s) in b&w. I am more likely to mute the background somehow, with vellum maybe? Or a swath of translucent paint so that the design shows through but the colours are not as strong, KWIM?

Honestly, not much. Basically, if I'm in the mood to scrap, I will make ANYTHING work. Some pages are 'meh'; some are masterpieces. I don't fret on it too much and just move on.

The paper is themed for DC but the paper that looks better is old stock from KI Memories. It's a soft palette of gray, soft blue, soft green which makes you think of statues and it doesn't compete with the photos. Problem is I don't have enough of this ancient paper to do whole album nor does it fit in with the DC papers I bought specifically for this album. It's like buying Disney themed paper and finding it doesn't work with the photos at all except maybe a meal at Chef Mickey's.

I don't worry about keeping a whole album themed, so I would just go ahead and use those pp's for the photos that best suit it, and then use the newer stuff for different pages that don't face those. I tend to work with 2-pagers, and so while I work to keep two facing pages coordinated, I don't worry about seeing a different colour scheme when I turn the page.

I just cannot do an entire vacation album themed - I get bored with the papers before I get finished. The only time I have made myself finish a themed album was for my son's wedding where I only used one PP collection. For vacations, I will sometimes do a small set of LOs with one set of papers - maybe all the pages from one attraction - then move on to something else for the next page

The last layout I worked on took me 3 full days to finish! I'm not particularly quick when it comes to scrapping and I've always been fine with the fact that layouts take me a lot longer to complete than most scrappers, but this one was just painful for me! Why? Because it was the first time I did pocket pages. I don't do project life but I've always wanted to put pocket page layouts in my traditional albums. Just a few here and there when I have a lot of photos. I literally sat and stared at the pages for what seems like forever! Just didn't look right to me! At the end of the day when I finally completed the double page layouts, they're just "ok" and I'm not entirely sure that these two pages won't get redone down the road. But I now realize why pocket page layouts may not be right for me, and that is because I cannot recall the last time I used a 4x6 photo... it just looks a little odd!

The people looking at your album will NEVER notice that you used KI paper for some pages, the DC themed paper for some others and some of that Disney polka dot for something else. If the paper is what is holding you back from scrapping this trip, change the paper. Maybe someone else is looking for DC paper and you can sell it or trade for the KI paper?

It just seems that some layouts come together really quickly but others just don't look like I imagined them.

They may see things a different way. You are over thinking it and it really is more important that you get it down than if you have it in some idea of perfection.
You are talking about an entire album though. I love doing theme albums but I do not ever use the same papers throughout. Every page is its own story. There is no attempt by me to coordinate throughout.
What gets me stuck is when I DO NOT have the perfect theme paper. The worst for me is when I resort to cardstock. That means I am really out of options!

This just happened to me but I ended up changing the paper and fussy cut a few things from the original paper to add as embellishments. It looks nothing like I envisioned but I really didn't like the original and like the finished page. ETA: I would do as others have said and use different papers through out just make those that are next to each other match if possible. I usually do two page layouts but have done several single but am not going to worry about them in my albums. At this point I am just happy to get some pages done.

you can't come to terms with the frustration over the perfect paper you just HAD to purchase for a particular layout turns out to not work with the photos after all and it's a specific theme that you won't use for anything else I bought the cutest baby themed paper for my daughter's album, it ended up not matching her photos but doggone it I was determined to use it so I ended up using it for a double page layout with journaling and a few pieces of memorabilia I had saved.

What always sidelines me is when I have a layout 80% done, it's looking really great and then I realize that one of my photos is the wrong size to work in the space I wanted to put it, or I look at it and think, "Ugh, this would look so much better if I lightened it / cropped it / changed the orientation." Ending up with a photo that needs to be edited and reprinted is what gets me almost every stinking time.

pas2 what about using that paper to make some embellishments like tags, frames, tabs, banners, in strips like washi, etc. so you can spread it across the album? I get stuck on embellishing - I'll go through my stash over and over looking for the perfect element. I'll move things around for hours sometimes. I think it would come more easily if I scrapbooked more frequently.

Meh, how much did the paper cost, a dollar? Let it go. Use the paper you think looks better.
Can you fussy cut out an element or two from the themed paper to use as embellishment?
ETA This is when I get stuck, too - when I am trying to use a certain paper and it just won't come together.
