I'm old. In my day we wore pantyhose with nice dresses. I rarely wear dresses any more, usually just sundresses in the summer. Obviously, no pantyhose with those.
I am going to a "Red Dress Gala" soon with my college-aged DD and her sorority sisters. I am wearing a nice red dress. I'd like to wear panyhose with it. But I'm informed that NO ONE wears pantyhose any more. Is that true? Do I have to show off my bare, pale, spotty, old-lady legs? This is not a dress one can wear leggings with. I don't have time to put on self-tanner and I'm afraid of having orange legs with that. Will I be the only one in the room full of college-girls and their moms who is wearing pantyhose?

I am an old lady too. I was informed by my DIL that it is OK to wear pantyhose as long as they are light colored. Other opinions may differ.

I'm old too (62). I have pale pasty white legs. I wear pantyhose on the rare occasions that I wear a dress. I just make sure they are a sheer shade. Wear the panyhose and feel comfortable. Just pick a light shade that will go with your leg color.

I think if you are that uncomfortable about it, you should wear pantyhose. I would get a high quality pair that really fits well and looks as natural and nude as possible.

The Duchess of Cambridge is bringing them back into fashion! She's in her 30s and never goes bare.
I am the whitest of white and unless it's summer and we're outside, my dress is long enough to cover most of my legs.
I have the same dilemma this weekend and think I'm going to breakdown and wear pants. Of course, you cannot, but I think it's okay to wear pantyhose!

I think you can wear pant hose if that makes you more comfortable.
I would wear the lightest color and least shiny as possible. OR do black with black shoes.
Google Black Pantyhose with red dress you will see a ton of images of young girls looking fashionable.

No, you do not have to go barelegged! And I hate that "rule" with a burning, fiery passion. I have a big scar front and center on my leg from a melanoma. Besides that, my legs show my age (55) and I am a fair skinned redhead, so you can only imagine how lily white they are. I very rarely wear dresses, but recently went to a very fancy schamncy shindig, and wore the sheerest pantyhose I could find at Nordstrom. Did they cover everything I dislike about my legs? NO! Did I feel better about how I presented myself? YES!
Last weekend I was in FL and went out to a fancy dinner in a dress. I did go barelegged there. It was 85 degrees! I brought the Sally Hansen leg makeup, but just decided I didn't have the interest in applying it.

If you want to wear pantyhose wear pantyhose. If you don't don't. Nobody will judge either way.

I expect women of a certain age bracket to still wear pantyhose. It's ok.

Sometimes hose "completes" formal wear. I say get a pair of good quality sheer hose.

Why would you not wear what you're comfortable wearing? Wear the pantyhose if that's what you want to wear.

I would wear them and not give a flying fig what anyone thinks. When I'm wearing a dress (which is very, VERY rare anyway), I wear them to keep my c-section tummy jiggle contained and to cover up my pasty white legs. Trust me when I say NOBODY needs to witness that!

I think panyhose were invented by the devil, but I am of the mind that go with what you feel comfortable doing. If that means wearing panyhose then screw what everybody else is doing.

I used some Sally Hansen leg makeup for my son's graduation. It was a good compromise for me, didn't look too orange, and applied in minutes. It stays put pretty well but I wouldn't sit on a white chair with it on, no need to tempt fate. For a Christmas party I used Soap & Glory's Instant Sunkissed Tint Body Lotion, which is not orange and isn't a self-tanner like the type that can dry streaky. It's a tinted lotion. Like the Leg Makeup, it stays put pretty well though some got on the inner lining of my dress. It did wash out easily in the laundry, though.
I don't think you'll be judged too harshly if you just go with hose, though. It is a lot easier!

FYI - in my experience, sorority girls think that darkness makes things fancier, so chances are that no one will be able to see your legs at all!

I am in my 40s and don't wear them (although I do wear opaque tights with work clothes during the winter -- it's cold!) My opinion is, however, you should do what makes you feel comfortable. I doubt anyone will care, and if they do, they're lame.

Of course you can wear your hose. Now I asked a question a few weeks ago here about what color hose to wear and got several comments about my peep toed shoes and hose so I'd recommend close toed shoes with your hose, or very small peeps at most. Be happy with your look and you'll look radiant and no one will pay any attention to your hose.

I wear hose to work when I'm wearing heels. Not because I have to, but because I am pasty pale as well. I get the nude sheer ones and I feel comfortable in them. I also wear then because I don't want my bare feet in my shoes. The hose not only keep my shoes from smelling bad, but they also keep me from getting blisters. The no-show toe things always peek out the edges, so I don't wear those with heels.

Be comfortable. There are no shoulds. People still wear pantyhose and you can, too. Do what is best for you.

I agree with wearing what is comfortable for you. There are some pantyhose that are very sheer, and that is the kind I would go for. (Just don't get that kind that looks thick like support hose.) Good department stores carry nice, sheer pantyhose.

Well according to most of the Peas, pantyhose are of the devil and should never be worn. According to AussieMeg they are fine to wear in winter when you need a bit of extra warmth or if you're wearing a fancy frock and you want to camouflage your veiny, white, cellulitey or blotchy legs. ETA: I think panyhose were invented by the devil, but I am of the mind that go with what you feel comfortable doing. If that means wearing panyhose then screw what everybody else is doing. I wrote my comment about Peas thinking pantyhose are of the devil before I read your comment Freecharlie!!

I wear them with dresses if tights don't work. My bare legs are much uglier than any kind of hose would ever be.

I hate nylons and do everything in my power to never have to wear them but I wouldn't give a second thought to someone else wearing them. I think you should do what makes you feel comfortable.

Wear them if you want, but you must wear them with closed toe shoes. Personally I would wear a sheer black because I'm not a fan of the skin colored ones.
The poster that mentioned the duchess of cambridge was correct, I was in London last week and saw many women (20s-30s) wearing hose with their skirts and dresses.

IMO, hose are an item that is just fine to wear even if the trend is to not wear it.. so if you want to wear them do it with pride!

I still wear hose too. In the summer my legs are nice enough to get away with not wearing them. But in the other three seasons it's cold enough here that I feel ridiculous without them.

I detest hose or tights. Hell to the no would I ever wear them! I didn't wear them to my own wedding!
That said, wear whatever you want. I would never judge someone for wearing them.

I can't remember the last time I wore pantyhose. I would use self tanner on my legs because I would be more comfortable for me. You should do whatever is more comfortable for you.

I wear pantyhose a lot - thick tights in winter when it's cold and thin pantyhose in summer, particularly for more dressy occasions. I say wear them if it'd make you feel more comfortable.
