So I'm in Vegas for a girls trip right now. We live in a tiny town with no uber. We've taken 2 rides so far. The first was a lady; she was great and helpful with advice. She knew it was our very first uber. She didn't say anything about a tip and no signs were in her car.
Second ride was a weirdo guy. He had a big tip jar and 3 signs inside suggesting tips. He also told us most people don't know that you should tip your driver.
I thought the whole point of uber was an easy transaction, no money needed to trade hands. So I googled this AM and it looks like anything goes. So I came to the peas because peas know everything 😋!

I tip. Just FYI.... if you have two Dr Pepper UPC codes and text them to the number on the label, you get $5 off an Uber ride now thru the end of June.
I'm taking a trip in May to a city that is VERY Uber friendly and I already have $40 saved up. Can't use them all at one time but I figured $5 off is at least a tip

I tipped when using Uber last year. I thought it was odd that none of my drivers (4 different drivers on different days) accepted anything but cash. I guess I just figured Uber to be a cashless system but that wasn't my experience at all. All of the drivers I dealt with were super friendly, had great suggestions about things to do and see and honestly went above and beyond my expectations so I wanted to leave them a tip regardless of what was expected.

My DH is an Uber driver and always says, "Tips are not necessary, but are appreciated."

When I started using uber I read the website from top to bottom and there was a line that about uber taking away the need for tipping.
However...after chit chatting (about how uber works--compaing uber with taxis, ect) with several uber drivers it came up that they didn't know the website said that.
Idk if uber site still says that, but I have long decided that I prefer to tip the drivers for a ride that's cheaper and usually more pleasant than any taxi I've ever taken. So I do try to keep a few dollars cash for that.

i've done it both ways. If I get great conversation, helpful info, from my driver then yes, I tip.
But the last Uber ride I had the driver was rude and snippy. He acted like it was a huge deal that DH had a suitcase (we were going to the airport). So nope. No tip.

Wow. We don't have Uber in our town, but I travel a bit and the whole point of Uber is you do NOT have to tip. NOT!! It's included in your cost.
I would say I take about 5 trips per month on average and I have never tipped. I love Uber for that. Same with Lyft!

I've never tipped for a ride, if it was expected it would be built into the app. Uber Eats specifically says no tips required, although if delivery is quick I will normally tip a few bucks

Sometimes. If I think the service was outstanding. I know the tip is included but I've had drivers bend my stiff leg for me or make sure that I can climb down if it's an SUV.

There is no tip included in what the drivers get paid.

I use Lyft so I can tip within the app. When I used to use Uber I would tip a couple bucks in cash if I had it on me.

When Uber was first started, they went off the "no tips required, they're built in" idea. But that was their higher class of vehicles, when they were trying to compete with the hired car market.
But then the public requested a cheaper class, to compete with taxis. So they created UberX which is much less expensive. But in the UberX class, there is no margin for tips built in to the fare in the UberX class. But uber never changed their "schpiel" to communicate that to the customer. My DH drove uber for a while and I saw the numbers first hand. So yes, now I do tip.

Yes
Originally, that was not the intent. But once Lyft became serious competition and the rates and driver compensation dropped, there is no longer margin for "built-in" tips.
Lyft has in-app tips, Uber doesn't. I usually take Lyft because of that - I rarely have cash on me. But I do take Uber, I tip cash.

I never understood why if Lyft can add a tip function into their app, why can't Uber. Uber's claim is that it's a cashless transaction and yet by not including a tip function in their app they make it so people who WANT to tip have to use cash. Then they put their drivers at risk by carrying around cash with them. That among other things never made any sense to me.

I'm glad you asked, I'd be interested to know. I've lived here 14 years, and I still get confused by the protocols around tipping.
I tip because its expected, but I absolutely RESENT paying $50 for a haircut and being asked if I want to tip on top of it. Why are hairdressers tipped?
I happily tip well, when I go out to eat because I know its expected as part of service.
I'm just unclear about how it became expected in places where I don't expect it. Like Starbucks. These people are paid above minimum wage, so why the tip jars?

You should report him to uber. I take uber pool all the time because my rides are $3, as does everyone I know. No one tips here.

You should report him to uber. Why? they're allowed to accept if someone wants to tip them. It's just not built into the payment app so it would have to be in cash directly to the driver.. from Uber's website

I can't imagine not tipping on that ride. No matter where you are going, $3 is a bargain. But I do agree that it should be available to tip in the app. My college student uses Uber/Lyft/taxis around town and it would be nice to have all money go through the app because I reimburse him for all school related expenses.

I always do. When uber first started the drivers tried to refuse the tips, but that hasn't happened in a long time.

YES!!
Uber drivers don't make much. You used to be able to include a tip automatically; that was changed and is no longer an option. The contracts for drivers have also been changed and they now make less per trip. When I use Uber I always take cash with me and give them a cash tip. The cost of the ride plus tip is still less than I used to pay for a taxi, before the tip.
I would prefer to use Lyft, but have been unable to upload the app to my Windows phone.

The second driver told us that when uber first started, you could add your tip on the app. But uber took a flat 25 percent of fees, including tips. And so the drivers all were pissed and filed suit and so uber took off the tip option instead of separating their fair percentage. Not sure if he stated factual info or not. Thanks for the advice. We've been tipping our ubers today. My one friend is so generous, she tipped one man a $20 on a $8 fee because he is new to the country. She hasn't tipped anything less than $5-6 on short rides.

It depends on if it is a quick trip across town or if it is a longer, late night, and we've been drinking trip and also how good the driver is.
On the topic of tipping though the worst one that I just experienced was at a deli shop and they had a screen on their credit card unit (before the signature page) that said 'how was your service today? Great 25%, Good 20%, OK 18%, Not so great - ask for a manager.' As far as I could tell there was no way to skip that screen so I felt pressured into leaving a tip, but I won't go back there.

Tipping in this country is completely out of hand. I hate the concept of tipping. Note, I didn't say that I don't do it, just that I hate the concept.

I never used to tip, because when it first came out, the whole point was not needing cash. I gave a fat tip to my Uber driver yesterday, though, because the weather/driving was nasty and I was saving a boatload of money because I had access to Uber, so I figured I'd share the wealth a little. When I handed him the cash, he said, "Oh, no, you don't have to do that." I insisted. I don't always have cash, though - that's why I use Uber...

I come from a country where tipping is not a thing, so I tend want to understand why I'm doing it and how much is normal, when it comes up. I don't ever want to stiff someone who truly relies on it as income. I am more than happy to tip well where I know its expected, and why. I just don't understand the "why?" of it in certain places. Are hairdressers not paid decently? I'll be quite happy to tip Uber drivers now knowing what has been posted here about how little they make. Especially if I'm given good service by them.

Oh I'd happily push the ask for the manager button and proceed to tell him that I'd enjoyed the service right up until the screen went up demanding a tip. That's straight up bs.
