I found a file full of the old paper piecing patterns that used to come in the scrapbook magazines. I scanned them into my computer for future reference. I was about to toss the originals when I realized that the back of each page is filled with page plans. Now I'm trying to decide if it's worth the bother to scan these into the computer too or just toss them. Up til now I have used plans but only if I had one directly associated with a layout I wanted to scraplift. I find I tend to stick to variations of the same basic layout because I usually do 8.5x11 layouts with lots of photos. I find 12x12 pages challenging so maybe I will hang on to these plans.
Does anyone really use plans anymore for inspiration or do you just go with what moves you at the time? Do you feel you have enough experience that you don't rely on plans for inspiration anymore or do you use them if you hit a rut? I'm interested in where everyone is in the creative process since many of us have been scrapping for a long time now.

I do use sketches - not for every layout but if I'm stuck or if I feel like I'm in a rut to shake things up

Once in a while I use a sketch, or create a page based on a challenge. I really should use them more often, I have been having trouble coming up with ideas on my own for pages.

I used to use sketches all the time, and religiously printed off each month's Page Maps and flagged sketches I liked in magazines. If I didn't have a sketch from one of my sources, I drew one myself. But now, I usually start a LO by arranging the photos on the background, then adding other elements and layers in various arrangements until I am happy with it, run out of time, or decide "enough is enough!" Even after that, once I have glued everything down, it's not unusual for me to pry up an element or two and make some final adjustments. Like linda, I use sketches for ideas when I am stuck. What I create doesn't end up looking much like the sketch, but the idea is what I am looking for. I have lots of sketches pinned in Pinterest. And I often print off KikiPea's challenge sketches--and others if I think I might use them.

A lot of my pages have 4 or more photos, so I don't need much of anything else on the page. There isn't much room left!
I only turn to sketches and scraplifting when I only have 1 or 2 photos on a page and I need some kind of design element or embellishment ideas.

I use sketches a lot. I'll show you my MO...messy but I keep my favorites like taped up where I can see them. I don't need them so mu h for placing pics but more for embellishment placement. I'm usually happier with my page when I use a sketch

I do use sketches but don't keep any magazines or print anything. I don't want to store things like that when there is so much inspiration online. I look for sketches for design and picture placement ideas but not for every layout.

I do not ever use sketches and I never have. But my close scrap friend does her own sketches. For me that's an extra step and I don't know what I'm going to do until I do it.

I tend to get in a rut with my card designs. A sketch is really helpful to break out of that rut. I just found one that I really like and will use on my next card.

I can get an album done in half the time IF I use sketches as a starting point. I like to make page kits and throw the sketch in the kit to help start my engines. Cutting out the sketches and putting them on index cards and separating them into number of photos is a great way to organize them if you like them. I don't like a lot of sketches, but the ones I do like, I save.

I use sketches pretty much all the time for scrapping... I just don't want the 'work' of figuring out the page design and photo arrangement / placement for every layout-- I let someone else do that work for me, lol. I use either SG sketches or Club Scrap Assembly Line Scrapping instructions, make the pages, then decide on the photos and final embellishments at a later time.
And I can always adapt the sketches to accommodate a different number of photos from what's suggested.
Just sitting down with my photos and starting from scratch is a very rare occurrence.

to elaborate more on my previous answer - I have a box of index cards with sketches glued to them or handdrawn - all sorted by number of photos (and there's a category for cards also). When I purged my magazines - I pulled a ton of sketches and put them in page protectors in a prong folder. I also have Page Maps, 2 Deluxe Designs colourblocking books, BH's Sketches 1 and 2 and Best of ...oh and the Pages by Design templates/book. I probably use the box most often but I try and pull one of the others out and put it into rotation periodically as well. I scrap 8.5x11 and anywhere from 1 photo on a single page layout to 18+ photos on a double-page layout - typically 2-5 photos though. I find that if I'm doing several layouts in a row with the same number/orientation of photos, it's hard to come up with a different twist and that's where the sketches really help ME a ton - if I'm doing a single page layout - I'll often use one-page of a two-page sketch. For 2-page layouts - sometimes I'll pull the different pages from different sketches. And like grammadee - my finished product doesn't usually look that much like the sketch - it's a jumping off place I need to pull a sketch for the photos sitting on my scrapbook table ...they've been there all month now and they aren't going to scrap themselves...

I still use sketches. I am using one now from a scrapbook generations sketchbook and plan to use another one for my next layout to.

I have quart sized ziploc bags with various pages and sketches. They are labeled by number of photos. Since pinterest, I now have boards that do the same thing. I do not like designing pages. I like completed pages. I generally use a layout for inspiration on almost every page I make. Sometimes it is a sketch.

Anyone remember the Becky Higgins Creative Companion sketch book? Years ago when I was a new scrapper it was my go to for layout ideas. Now I pretty much do my own pages. If I get stuck there are plenty of sites where I can do a little scrap lifting.

I use card and layout sketches or sketch out my design when I scrapbook so I don't forget what I'm doing
