I don't know, but I feel bad for her. She left this morning with a bookbag sticking out over a foot behind her back with her lunch box attached and a trombone over her shoulder. They don't have lockers, so she carries all of that around all day.

Mine don't have lockers either. My youngest does have a cubby so he doesn't have it all day, just part. But oldest has it all day. Their poor backs!

School hasn't started here yet. Last year 40 pound pack for a 70 pound kid.

Wow, what do your kids carry that is so heavy?
I've never weighed my kids' backpacks, but they are going into grades 5 and 8, and their packs usually only have lunch for school, plus their own books for reading and sketchbooks for drawing. They do take their instruments to school once a week.
I also think not having lockers is just crazy!! What do your kids do with their coats -- rain, winter -- or umbrellas and boots?

Mine (esp oldest) have binders, notebooks, if they have a book for that class. They don't use desks where they can keep their stuff in

They do take their instruments to school once a week. I also think not having lockers is just crazy!! What do your kids do with their coats -- rain, winter -- or umbrellas and boots? Alison has 4 classes a day, and she is required to have a binder for each. The required 3" math binder and the 2" language arts binder go with her every day, plus binders for the other 2 classes that day. She has a book to read on the bus and her planner. She occasionally has a book or two that comes home, but those stay in the classroom for the most part. I laugh that if the school had put the instrument cases beside the instruments when the kids were picking, they all would have chosen flutes. In the winter, all of that will stay with her all day. We won't have to worry about boots here, and once she is on the bus everything is covered, even the walkways around campus, so it is just the winter coat that will have to stay with her all day. I foresee arguments about bringing the coat to school.

Wow! Can kids use rolling bags?

Middle school was the worst for us. DS carried 25 lbs regularly that year.
The schools seem to have wised up and have invested in a classroom set of texbooks so kids aren't having to lug them back & forth. We don't have lockers either. My favorite thing to read on the syllabus is that the teacher does not require a dedicated binder so the kids just carry one binder and have different tabs for each subject.

Wow! Can kids use rolling bags? Most kids won't using a rolling backpack once they hit middle school (at least around here). There was one kid at DS's school who used a carry-on size suitcase and it always made me smile watching him strolling down the street afterschool. I can't imagine a class full of kids opening their suitcases to take out a book though.

our schools are on block schedules so my kids will have two different back packs for alternate days. It will be a lot less heavy for them that way.
