You're a soft hearted cat "mom" who spoils your girls just a wee bit Your 2, 4 year old (indoor only) cats have never paid any attention to your sofa, choosing to spend their lounging time elsewhere. All of a sudden, a week ago, for no reason whatsoever, one of your cats has decided that sleeping front and center on the sofa is the best spot (which it pretty much is for people watching) IN THE PLACE. Photo below for evidence. The Princess is gray. The sofa is off white. It's spring, and even though she gets brushed at least twice a week, she sheds like mad this time of year. This simply is not going to end well. After a week, it's clear that this is not a passing fancy of the Princess's. The options: 1. Allow the Princess to continue sleeping there, and deal with the sofa getting cat hair and cat hair oils on it. The least favorite plan of attack. 2. Cover the sofa with a blanket or something (no slipcover), then remove it when people are over. Sofa is very visible in the condo, and you're a visual person...always arranging things "just so" in the place. So for a bit-picky person this is a less than ideal solution. 3. Use the "scat mat" on the sofa to train the Princess to stay off. You had good success using it on the kitchen counters when the girls were younger. The downside is that it will train the Princess to never get on the sofa, which feels excessive. However, there are many other cat friendly places for the Princess to hang out on. So.....really, now that I've typed this out, #1 is not an option. Just curious, if this was your cat, would you choose 2 or 3? How much of a softy are you?!? And lastly, now that I re-read this looking for spelling errors, using "you" instead of "me" in this feels a little odd, but I'm tired and am PUI, so it stays. Sorry!

I would go with option 3. We do not allow the cat on our sofa but I am sure she sleeps there when we are not around. But since we are around a bunch, she does not get on the sofa much.
You might resign yourself to putting a throw on the sofa to catch the fur. Find something that you can live with and that will go with your decor. Also, you might beef up the brushing to daily while she is shedding so much.

It looks to me the only thing needed is a Do Not Disturb sign. Yawn...

I would look for an off white throw/blanket to cover the sofa. But to me, a sofa that color needs to be protected from the lint and dust carried by humans as much as the cat. Then take the blanket off when guests are coming over.

I'd go with a blanket for now. Or maybe buy a princess colored throw or mat or something

#2 Why is your cat oily? Do you use something special on her fur? I've never had a cat with oily fur, at all.

If your cat is anything like our cat, he goes through location jags. He will decide that a random basket with no cushioning at all on top of the laundry cabinet is THE nap location. We put a towel in there to make it more comfy, at which point he decides we are too lame for words and moves on to the next hot location. If we put a cover over the spot on the couch, he'd be outta there. Maybe you could try our method.

A blanket of course...much easier than de-furring the couch. I bought pet slip cover things from Amazon for a little used room, ok so the humans use it little, but not cats. Covers are awesome. I have one who sits on back of couch the other on the couch...covers both parts, pop them in the wash and cat clean up is done.

I know you don't like option 1 but that is what I would do. It's amazing how a little cat can position herself in the middle of a sofa, stretch out all legs and tail just so no human can even sit on the remainder of the sofa. It's a talent.

1. Go to your favorite home dec store to find the perfect throw blanket to coordinate with your decorating style. 2. You end up going to 3 stores looking for the perfect throw. 3. You buy perfect throw to put on couch for your lovely cat to lounge on. 4. Lovely cat then chooses a chair for her perfect napping spot.

In my experience cats are constantly finding new places to sleep so chances are she'll soon move on. In the meantime I'd put a blanket down. Truth be told I'd just leave her and use a lint roller to get the hair off.

She's so sweet. It would never occur to me to kick my cats off my sofa. I love that they're comfy in their home. I'd let her be. If that's not an option, I'd buy a throw for the spot.

This is why I have slipcovers. My cousin is an interior decorator and she chose a dog that color coordinated with her furniture!

I gave up years ago and went with option 2 - the throw. It also helps having slipcovers. The new sectional coming in a few months will not have slipcovers, and will also back up to the picture window. I plan to order a long scat mat to put on the back cushions. Both dogs much prefer the comfort of the back cushions. I can only imagine their glee when they see a long bank of cushions right in front of the big window.

I'll be another dissenter as I would go with option 1. We have a dark cat and a white sofa. Said cat rarely goes on the couch, but when he does it's no big deal to use a lint roller to remove his fur. Our cat moves from place to place, picking a different favorite spot every other week, so it wouldn't bother us.

I'm not nearly so nit-picky about the way things 'look' so for me, I'd put a folded blanket on the couch right on the spot where she likes to lay down. I wouldn't cover the ENTIRE sofa with a blanket, just put one right where she likes to lay. Or I'd choose #1 and just deal with it when it was necessary- get the sofa cushions cleaned. But that's me- we have three long-haired dogs and three cats, and they lay pretty much anywhere they want to in our house (except for no dogs on the bed).
eta: I agree, cats are finicky enough that if you put a blanket down on that spot, there is a very good chance she'll move on to some other new 'favorite' location.

Ok, a blanket it is, for now Though I totally like the idea of buying a cat bed for the spot, because I know she'd then find a different spot to hang out on!
