We are taking a 3-4 day trip in early June to see university of Maryland and to sightsee in DC. I'm trying to figure out a hotel stay and trying to decide if we need a car. We will fly in to Reagan.
We will probably arrive on a late flight and visit campus the next day. Then we will spend two or three days doing sightseeing stuff in DC.
I usually stay at a Hilton and their app shows lots of hotel options in various areas of D.C. I'm not sure which area will best fit our needs.
I have a few questions... Can we do this trip without a car? Should we spend first night near campus them relocate to hotel closer to sights in DC? Any hotel suggestions that are within walking distance to monuments and other attractions?
Thanks!

Not sure where the University is but I highly recommend the Phoenix Park Hotel in DC - close to the Capital, Union Station, etc. We will stay there when visiting our DS and DIL and we never get a car. Parking is hard in DC, you can take metro or cab anywhere you want. You may want to stay near the University the first night and then move.
You can always get a car for the trip to the University, go back by the airport and return it and then taxi or metro to the city, we did that once and it worked out well so we didn't have to pay the hotel for parking
The Phoenix Park is an independent hotel and on weekends usually have specials and the rates are about what you would pay at some of the chains.

My daughter goes to the University of Maryland. College Park is not the nicest area when you get off campus, so you may just want to do DC in terms of staying. Or ask the Admissions office for hotel recommendations - they could probably steer you to a better place. But I wanted to warn you that the College Park metro station is going to be closed for a couple of weeks this spring, so you might want check and make sure that you can get in and out of College Park easily if you end up being car-less.

I agree with the above posters. You do not want to stay too close to the U of MD College Park campus. I would stay in DC or near a metro station. You will need a car or uber to get to U of MD campus. You can register your visit ahead of time and then when you get to campus just go in the main entrance and the visitors center will be on your left. Go in and they will give you a parking permit to park on campus. Pack good walking shoes. There is so much to see. My dd and her friend were sightseeing in DC today and my dd logged 17k steps on her fitbit!

Yes, you will need a car to go to the U of MD.
The DoubleTree at Crystal City is the newest Hilton (by Hilton standards as it is the most recently updated). It sits near the Pentagon City and Pentagon stations. I'd recommend it for ease to DCA (they have shuttle on the hour) and free shuttle to the metro.

Yay! I am a Terp alumni and my daughter is a Terp! I live in PA, but am from Maryland, about 20 min. from campus. Maybe you could call Univ. of MD for some hotel suggestions close to campus. Because I have never stayed in a hotel near there, I couldn't help you with that one.
It's a beautiful campus, I hope you have a great time! Message me if you have any questions!

We stayed at the Washington Hilton (where Ronald Reagan was shot) three years ago this week. We had been in Maryland for a lacrosse tournament, and DH drove us to the hotel and went back to the airport. We stayed and visited DC and he went back home to work. It was very convenient for tourism, and was easy to get to from MD, and out of when we left. Washington Hilton

Many years ago we stayed at the Capital Hilton which is very close to the White House and about a mile from the Washington Monument and the mall. We walked about a block to the metro station. It was a great location.

Greenbelt Marriott! I was just there a couple weeks ago. Very close to UMD. You can take the Metro and have the hotel pick you up from the Metro station and then her to UMD. There is also a Holiday Inn College Park next to Ikea but I think you'd definitely need a car to get to that hotel.

That makes me so sad to hear it isn't a nice area off campus anymore. I graduated in 1988 and back then College Park had nice neighborhoods off campus.

Thanks for asking Maryland! She is a freshman this year and it has taken her a little while to settle in, but she finally seems like she has found her place I think it still does have some nice neighborhoods, but it isn't universely a nice area. The campus itself though is beautiful!

We just stayed at the r- a red lion boutique hotel. It is beautiful and close to 2 metro stops. But the parking garage next to it is under contstruction! And they only work at night. Boo hiss.
I think we paid $180 a night.

Look on air bandb for places. There were a couple one block off a metro stop and the house were very old stately manors.

I grew up in Glenn Dale (Bowie). Did you grow up in Maryland? I remember CP being nice then too. My daughter loves UMD!

The campus itself though is beautiful! My daughter is a sophomore and loves it there! I grew up 20 min. away, but I have lived in Pgh. for years now. But every summer when we visit my parents I take the kids on a tour of the campus for an entire day (big campus, and we are there in July, so you know how hot it gets there in July, so we move slowly!). So my daughter knew the campus so well by the time she was a freshman. I love getting her snapchats with her Maryland filters and the pretty places on campus. I went to Maryland too!

Thank you for the great tips everyone. I can always count on the peas!
Also, thank you to those who shared comments about University of Maryland. My ds is having a challenging time finding a college that is a good fit. While it's been fun to visit various campuses, I'm eager for him to feel "wowed" by a place. Maybe this will be the one.
If it's not, we will have at least had a great mini-vacation to D.C.
