My 17 (almost 18) year old dd is looking for a new book to read. She thinks the peas know everything so she asked me to check here. We are all horror fans in our house, both movies and books. She used the word "disturbing" in what she's looking for in her next read. She wants supernatural disturbing though, not regular people murdering disturbing. I can tell you that a few of her favorite books have been Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and Dean Koontz's The Taking.
Any suggestions?

She should read anything by John Saul. He wrote all paranormal/ghost horror and I devoured his books in high school and my early 20's. his older stuff is more supernatural than the newer. I'd say up until 99. www.johnsaul.com/books.html

I haven't personally read it, but a friend recommended House of Leaves as the creepiest book he's ever read.
I'd also recommend anything by Joe Hill. He's Stephen King's son and writes inn a similar vein.

How about Feed by M.T. Anderson. Creepy in a different way, maybe, but one that sticks with you.

A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay. So good. Disturbing, possession, crazy family type game snook I think it was discussed here before. I loved it.

John Saul is super creepy! I've read almost all his books when I was younger.

I like haunted house stories. A couple of my favorites are The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons (her one and only foray into horror!) and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Also We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson--in fact, I'd especially recommend this to a reader your daughter's age.

I remember reading John Saul as a teen. The only one that I have a strong memory of is Suffer the Children. I'll have to tell her to take a look at his stuff.
The House of Leaves looks really strange and might be something she'd like. The Feed looks interesting too, although not supernatural. Worth a look.
We did listen to one of Joe Hills books, Heart-Shaped Box, on a family trip. I fell asleep, because I do that on long car rides but my dd and dh really liked it. I'm looking at his new book, The Fireman, and that looks promising since, in addition to supernatural, she loves plagues and post apocalyptic stuff.
These are great guys--keep'em coming!

I loved The Fireman!
I also love post apocalyptic stuff
has she read "The Stand" by Stephen King? LOVE that one
also, "Station Eleven" is a little light on the disturbing factor, but it is somewhat disturbing and is post apocalyptic-I liked it

Has she read anything by Stephen King's son, Joe Hill. Along the same vibe as his Dad, but a touch creepier if that is possible. I saw some already mentioned The Firemen, but NOS4A2 (get it? lol), Horns, and Heart Shaped Box are also really good.

Has she read some of the older classics like William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist or Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes? I loved those when I was younger.

Now I keep thinking of this really creepy book I read about 25 years ago. It had something to do with zombie like creatures crawling out from under the bed. Anyone know what book I am talking about? I remember being terrified but I couldn't stop reading. I don't normally read that genre. Thanks to the book "It" I am afraid of clowns.

I have read a ton of Stephen King from the very beginning of his career, and I don't think anything I've read by him even comes close to how creepy Heart Shaped Box was. Eeek. I have several other books by Joe Hill on my Kindle, but I'm skeered to read them. For some reason, Needful Things by Stephen King freaked me out more than his other books. Oh, and Cell. Holy crap, that one scared the bejeebers out of me. I didn't read anything SK for a long time after that.

The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons (her one and only foray into horror!) Wow! That's surprising. I saw the name and thought, wait isn't she the one who writes novels set in the South?

Yes, and I've never been interested in any of her books, but Stephen King mentioned The House Next Door in his book on writing horror, so I checked it out and really liked it. She should have written more in that genre, but I guess she just had the one story in her!
