My husband has been using tracfone for years but for the past few, coverage is extremely spotty. Apparently the t-mobile network is craptastic in our area and that is the type of sim he has. AT&T is the only decent coverage here so we need a company that uses the AT&T network. Tracfone has sent us two new at&t sim cards and so far neither one has worked. They're sending a third but I don't have high hopes. He also never needs any data and something like 300 minutes per month is fine for him. Some I'm looking at (that supposedly use at&t) are airvoice and puretalk. Anyone use either of these or know anyone who does? Or have any other ideas for similar plans-not at&t because their cheapest plan is $25 a month?
He would like to keep his number since he uses it for his job but I have a feeling that might be the problem (his number isn't meshing well with at&t or something).

My kids have gone to GoogleFi and love it. They have the Pixel phone, which is a little pricier, but you can get the cheaper Nexus 5x phone. It is unlimited text and talk for $20 month. You can add 1 GB of data for $10, and as many additional GB at $10 as you want. If you don't use it - it gets credited back to you, so if you only used .5 This might not be the ideal plan for your husband - but it sure is for those who use some data and are just looking for a cheaper plan. You can add another person for $15/month ... so two people would be $35 - unlimited talk/text (international texting). And you can add however much data per person as needed. Right now it works off US Cellular, TMobile, and Sprint towers. I don't know that this is the ideal thing you are looking for - but I thought it worth a mention. fi.google.com/about/

AT&T Go Phone is 25.00 a month. You can pay each month, so no plan. Unlimited text and I think 300 minutes of talk time.

I have Republic Wireless. Unlimited talk, text, and wi-fi data is $15/mo + tax. No contracts and you can change plans any time (to others that include data). They lease capacity from Sprint. republicwireless.com/cell-phone-plans/You do have to buy one of their phones, but they have some cheap ones (starting at $150).

We love consumer cellular. Bought our phones, able to keep our old numbers, 2 lines for $62/month, excellent coverage in the US

Another vote for Project Fi, but they're definitely not as cheap as a go phone.
You should be able to transfer to whatever provider you go to. Just make sure you tell the new provider and get it all squared away before you cancel your current service.

I'm a tech dork. So much so, I feel obligated to warn you.
My husband has my son on something called Telos. It's ten dollars a month. And he has an iPhone 4s.

So tonight dh begged me to transfer his number to a phone. Any phone. He has had people trying to call him for 2 days (in the process of trying to transfer his number they somehow deactivated it) . I have a new tracfone on hand (from a free upgrade that I didn't end up using) so I called them. They said they can only transfer his number to another t-mobile sim. Crap. So now we wait for a t-mobile sim so he can have his original number on a phone that will barely get a signal. I'm hoping that once his busy season is over we can try a different company because this blows.

I hardly use my cell, so I use the 10 cents a minute/ 20 (?) cents a text option. And, the unspent money rolls over as long as you buy more for your account before the current ones expire. You can also buy data, but I don't use that. I just use my wifi in the house for audiobooks and to go online.

We use Straight Talk and I love it. You can bring your own phone and just get a sim to put in - WalMart has those here. My husband only wants a plain phone no data, no internet, etc. So his plan is cheaper than mine. There is no contract but you can get automatic payment each month. To change a phone and keep your number is easy and no problem either. They have phones for sale on their site, but not usually the newest and most up to date. Which does not matter to us. I believe husbands phone is $35 a month with no limits and my phone is $45 a month cause it is a smartphone. But there is no limits on it as well.
