Black is horrible. I have all black appliances and HATE them. Impossible to keep looking nice. Every speck of dust shows. So, you'll be wiping either black or stainless often. At least with the stainless you'll only have to wipe the fingerprints off, not the whole face of the appliance. My mom has black appliances and HATES them. She is by no means a clean freak, but hates that the black always looks dusty. Mom doesn't think they ever look clean.

we have never had stainless appliances, but are changing over our kitchen to black stainless. we've only bought the fridge so far, and it is a little more work than the white one it replaced. but it's not easy to see the smudges or drips, it appears to be waaay more forgiving than stainless appliances we've seen in friends houses. there, we'll come over for a group get together, and the fridge has been cleaned of course, and by the end of the night it's a smudgy mess.
I really like the GE slate line, but they didn't have a fridge that fit our exact needs. love the color and the matte finish tho.

A good friend replaced her old white fridge with stainless and HATED it. She is a bit on the compulsive side when it comes to cleaning and the fingerprints drove her insane. Her kids are grown and gone so it's just herself and DH, and even at that she felt like she was constantly wiping it down.
We always had white at our previous places, this house has a SubZero with the cabinet door front so it blends in with all of the surrounding cabinetry. TBH, the wood doors are the only thing I like about it! Our other appliances are black and they do show a lot of dust, water spots and smudges.
One other thing to consider is whether your water is hard or not. Hard water stains are a huge PITA with stainless.

We put them in our pool house and I hate them! Which is why I went with classic white when we remodeled the kitchen!

I have a stainless dishwasher and refrigerator and microwave, and a stainless range with a black top. My kids are older, so fingerprinting isn't a huge issue, though there are still plenty of fingerprints. At first, any fingerprint at all bothered me. Now I'm much more tolerant of it and don't feel the need to constantly wipe at the fridge. When I get to it, I get to it. I will say, though, that the black top on my range is horrible. I thought it would be easy to clean, but it is not. It always looks streaky and dirty. I spend far more time on it than I do on my my other appliances, combined. I had the option to go with an entirely stainless range, but this one was cheaper and I liked the look of it better. I think that the grass is always greener on the other side, but I wish I'd gotten the all-stainless model.
Overall I really like my appliances and am very happy with the stainless.

I have all new appliances in the Black Ice stainless steel, love them! No fingerprints at all. Ihated my old stainless steel because of all the fingerprints.
Black Ice is not black, it's like a charcoal grey. It all really pops in my white kitchen.

Another love/hate one here. They look so pretty, but so dang annoying to keep clean, especially the fridge.
I'd buy them again, because I do love the look but they are a big PITA>

I'm considering white now, but do you think it would be too jarring with the dark cabinets?

We have stainless and I love it. The previous owners put it in. It's nothing special (Frigidere Pro line). It hardly shows pro yes at all and I haven't had the water mark issues others mentioned. It does scratch easily. I have to be careful with magnets on the fridge.

I'm considering white now, but do you think it would be too jarring with the dark cabinets? I think white would look nice with dark cabinets. But just be sure not to get a white stove top. I have one and it is the biggest PITA to keep clean. All of my other white appliances look brand new. Not the stove top. It's horrible. The only thing that helps keep it decent is the Norwex cleaner I have. But I'm cleaning/scrubbing those suckers every other night to maintain it.

At this point, I am considering inventing self-cleaning appliances!

I have a towel on my dishwasher, so I grab that and don't water stain the front of it. The one that is the worst is the microwave oven. I swear, my sons lick their hands before they open it every time. The stove and the fridge remain pretty clean.

I don't mind my stainless steel except the stove/oven, but that is because it is a POS and not the fact that it is stainless. I used the stainless cleaner on the appliance once every week or every other week and don't find the smudges to be irritating. Of course, my kids are 12 and 15, so no little handprints everywhere.
If I had the money to buy all new appliances, I would get the smudge resistant ones and I would get them in the slate-ish color. I really liked those.

We just did a gut job on our kitchen and dining room. We went from black appliances to stainless. It's just me and DH so we have no problem with fingerprints or smudges. We love stainless and have no regrets at all. I'm a little obsessed with keeping everything clean and shiny and I don't find the stainless any more work than the black.

I really like the look of the black stainless too, unfortunately they are not one of the choices. I'm still on the teeter totter lol.
