We are having our condo built at the moment and the model has stainless steel appliances in it except for the fridge. How do you think they hold up cosmetically? Are they hard to keep shiny, do they show a lot of fingerprints? I have the option of all black or stainless with some black. Any info would be helpful. I just don't want to get stainless and then hate them later if they are buggers to keep shiny. Thanks!
ETA: Our cabinets will be a dark brown walnut. I'm now considering white appliances, but do you think the white will be too jarring with the cabinet color? I was considering black as well, but it sounds like they are just as hate inspiring.

I'm interested in this too. We're going to have our kitchen remodeled and the kitchen guy recommends stainless steel for the look-personally, I was leaning towards black because of the fingerprint issue.

We did our kitchen in stainless and i'd recommend the black! They get so dirty, show fingerprints, etc. They also scratch more easily than colors because of the material.

My kitchen is all stainless. When my boys were little stainless was a pain. Now that they are both mostly grown, we dont have a problem keeping prints off the surface.

I don't like stainless, personally. They show everything- fingerprints, smudges, etc. I have standard white appliances- easy to clean, look nice and are cheaper than stainless.

I have a love hate relationship with my SS (regular stainless, not one of the supposed fingerprint resistant styles). I only have the fridge and ovens (cooktop is a drop in glass and dishwasher is paneled). I love the ovens and fingerprints are minimal. 6.5 years later they are still pristine (well on the outside at least, ha ha!). The fridge... ugh I hate it! I have 3 kids so fingerprints are a fact of life (and a husband who is also guilty) and they will all use their foot to close the bottom freezer drawer! But I have a good cleaner I like and we get by at this point. But when it was only a year old, we had family staying with us and their little hell child scratched up one of the doors with a magnetized toy he found in our playroom. And now there are a few small dings from where the French door has bumped the drawer & door of the adjacent cabinet when both were open.
When we finished out our basement a few years ago, we went with slate appliances in the kitchen. I really like them. They don't get much use, so it isn't a completely fair comparison. But fingerprints are minimal and the color is a nice compromise between black and SS.

Yes, they show fingerprints. If I had young children, I wouldn't get stainless. It's just DH and I at home now, so stainless is perfectly fine for us.

Black shows dust horribly. Stainless shows fingerprints- pick your poison

Do you have kids? If it is just the two of us, they stay clean much longer. I love the look of stainless, so I am willing to clean them more often. My kitchen gets a lot of sun and smudges do show.

Love our stainless - my kids were babies when we first moved to stainless, 15 years later we still love it. Even when they were little I thought the fingerprint issue was overstated - that or mine just learned to use handles earlier than some.

I've hád stainless in my last two homes. I love the look, and can't imagine going back to white. I've never had black. Fingerprints don't bother me too much, and I keep up on cleaning. However, I've got a couple of goodsized water spots/drips on my dishwasher and I cannot get them off. That I hate!

the fingerprint issue is different with different brands. Some show worse than others. I like how stainless is smooth and not textured. I always found that grime would build up on the edge of the fridge doors unless I scrubbed the heck out of them when I had white. I hated that. i get some fingerprints with my SS but it just wipes clean. Mine is one that can easily be cleaned with a damp microfiber cloth and plain water, so that helps me like it more, too.

I find the stove really hard to keep clean. The dishwasher has drops of water down the front that will never come off. Every little thing will scratch the finish.

I only have a ss kettle and toaster and they drive me crazy so I'd never get large as appliances. I prefer white.

I have a mixture of black and stainless appliances. The SS are fingerprint-resistant as easy to clean. I think the black is harder to keep looking good, actually.

We move a lot, so we always replace with stainless steel so the house will sell. I hate it, especially the dishwasher, because if your hand is wet when you close the door, it creates drip stains down the front.
Our current house (we've been here two years) had black appliances, but as they fail we are replacing with stainless. The black stove shows every little speck of dust. I feel like I am constantly wiping it down. It's a gas stove, so I have to remove all the grates to clean it.
My favorite house had the almond appliances and a flat top electric stove. I'm not a foodie and don't mind electric. I LOVED THAT THING! So easy to clean, and the lighter almond color didn't show dust or fingerprints. When got the house ready to move, we replaced all the appliances with stainless. Both my kids were away at college, and it was just me and DH, and I still hated the stainless.
I'll have to look more closely at the slate next time we're changing it up.

We just switched from white to S/S ... love it Our dd's are teens so I think that makes a difference in the amount of smudges on the appliances ... if they were small I wouldn't want it ...

We have stainless and love it. I just use those cleaning wipes on them.
You need to consider the lighting in your kitchen when choosing appliance color. Our kitchen doesn't get much bright natural light so black appliances would make the space even darker.

I like my stainless well enough. It's a big selling point if you're taking resale into consideration. I started out using the Weiman wipes and spray and they worked pretty well. Recently I noticed an almost oily residue around the edges that I'm pretty certain is from the Weiman. I switched to a Norwex glass cloth and water and like the results much better.
I have kids and grandkids around frequently and am a pretty picky housekeeper. I wipe down the front of the fridge and dishwasher every 3-5 days. I had to do it more often when using the Weiman wipes.
I will say one thing that drives me nutso is that there is an air vent right below my dishwasher. I have a heck of a time getting it wiped down before it dries and it's tricky not to have streaks. I have to shut the vent, then work in small sections.

I don't have a problem with SS, except my stove. I hate it. There are 3 grates and 5 burner covers to remove to clean it. It doesn't stay clean very long.

mikklynn I use the Norwex glass cloth and water. I've had inexpensive microfiber cloths before but never Norwex. I've been very impressed with the Norwex products I've purchased. They're significantly better quality than what *I've* had in the past but there may be other comparable quality products out there.

Sounds like there is more hate than love towards ss. I have 3 options, white, black and ss. I would never have known that water on ss leaves a stain. That right there, would make me crazy. My youngest at home is almost 18, but she leaves a mess wherever she goes. I do also have the option of white. I just wasn't sure white would go with the cabinets. They are a deep brown walnut, just beautiful. The black with ss is very pretty with them. Here is a picture of a similar color. We haven't decided on flooring yet, but the model home does have a lighter color tile which looks a bit like travertine. We can choose what we want on the floor, but I really like the tile, and I think maybe white appliances would look good with the floor, just not sure about the cabinets. I LOVE the cabinets though, so they won't change. Maybe I should consider white as well?

Black is horrible. I have all black appliances and HATE them. Impossible to keep looking nice. Every speck of dust shows. So, you'll be wiping either black or stainless often. At least with the stainless you'll only have to wipe the fingerprints off, not the whole face of the appliance.

Growing up my Grandma had black and she was a neat freak and those black appliances drove her mad! They do show fingerprints, streaks, dust. Awful she use to say. I have stainless steal, I love the look but yup they are full of little fingerprints. If I had a choice of any finish I'd go for the fingerprint resistant ss or that new gray black looking ss, can't remember the name, but out of your 3 choices I'd still go with stainless steal.

My range is stainless but the stovetop is black and I can never get that thing clean. My stainless appliances are no problem to keep clean. I buy those stainless steel wipes from Target and they work well. It's really no more work for SS than any other finish.

We just finished remodeling our kitchen and dining room in March. We got stainless steel and yes it is pretty. We have espresso stained cabinets and it looks great together. And yes it is a BIG pain in the neck to keep clean when you have kids. The dishwasher is hard to keep clean because if your hands are wet when you set the controls to turn it on or open and close the door, it leaves streaks that are very noticeable.

I like the look of our stainless steel appliances but don't like the upkeep. They always end up covered in smudges and fingerprints (I have a 6 year old and a newly turned 1 year old who is in the process of learning how to walk and pulls up on every piece of furniture so that really doesn't help matters). I have found stainless steel wipes (like Lysol wipes but you use them to wipe the fingerprints/smudges off stainless steel) and they make cleaning really easy, but honestly, five minutes after cleaning, they are dirty again, so it seems almost an exercise in futility! Now if it were just me and my husband, I'm sure they would be a lot easier to keep clean!
