I use Nivea in Medium to Dark. It's a gradual change the first week and I use it night so I don't smell it.

I don't have any recommendations, the ones I have tried smelled or they left streaks.
But question. Some advertise mitts to use to put it on. If you use a mitt, wouldn't your arms be tan and your hands be pale? Isn't that noticeable? I always used a damp old washcloth and wiped my palms on that after putting it on my hands. That worked pretty well.

Mine didn't come with a mitt and told me to wash my hands afterwards, well now my hands are lighter. However I think if you have a mitt you can putt color on on hand and then alternate each day. I follow a youtuber whose hands are always streaked so it's clear she uses self tanner and quite frankly I think it makes her hands look dirty.

On a blog a couple weeks ago a woman was recommending St. Tropez sunless taning mousse (I think). She bought the mitt and then showed a picture of herself. Her hands were pale and her arms were lightly tan. It just looked "off" to me because her hands really stood out. I like your idea about alternating putting the tanner on hands every other day.

I just put a little soap on my palms, and wash those, leaving my hands (the top) unwashed.

When using St. Tropez, I use the mitt. I apply to the back of my hands, no issue with the hands being paler than my arms.
Last night I decided to clean the cat fountain after applying. I did have an issue when the tanner was washed off my hands & trying to reapply & match it to my arms.
Additional note, I can't get natural looking results on my legs, so I use Sally Hansen leg makeup if I decide to wear a skirt or shorts. Still trying to find the "perfect" sunless tanner that works on all parts equally.
