My goodness...every time I clean up, I still have a pile of things that don't fit anywhere because I'm out of room. I feel like I have a ton of room around me, but apparently none of it is where I need to put things. So, every should be cleared surface is covered with crap I can't find a home for. Realistically, I am in no hurry to clean it up because as soon as I do (usually, I have a project in mind that I want to start) my 6 year old claims it as his own which creates a completely new mess to contend with. But, I'd like to put the few new things I have acquired away...it should be able to fit somewhere and yet, I end up picking up a pile, putting one or two small things from the pile away and then set the pile somewhere else. It's driving me nuts. I don't have anyone local to donate things to or I'd be incentivized to do a purge because this is getting annoying. I love to organize, what I don't love is feeling like I'm walking in circles. Anyone want to help me find an empty shelf that surely must be hiding in here somewhere?!

I am a terrible person to respond to this. I don't feel overwhelmed by mess until the supplies are literally cascading off the piles on my scrap counters. Even then, I may just move a pile to the floor and just keep on truckin'. I HATE organizing!
Maybe you need to break it down into two jobs: (1) organize and (2) put away?
Do you have an upright bin or other container that can work to sort all the stuff on your desk into? Then you can find a place for all related stuff at the same time.

Do you have an upright bin or other container that can work to sort all the stuff on your desk into? Then you can find a place for all related stuff at the same time. I have designated places for everything...my problem is that I have no more room in those spaces to add the new stuff (and by new, I mean that most of it has been sitting in a pile waiting for me to find room since my husband and I went to the scrapbook expo in Ontario last November). I have a couple of paper packs that I've purchased more recently from Tuesday Morning, but most of it has been waiting for a home for months. I used to enjoy taking on a new project when the existing space was outgrown, but not anymore. It was fun before because I had more space to utilize...but I've gone from having just a small 3x3 stack of Michael's cubbies that weren't even full (less than 10% of my room) to my entire room being filled to the brim (not hoarders level, but enough to cause problems like I'm facing now). I still feel like I have all of this space around me, but I'm struggling to find it because thinking about it makes me anxious and claustrophobic. I think my best bet is to find a box and fill it with as much paper as I can manage to part with in order to fit the new things...that would solve most of my current problems. The reason I don't want to is because the place it would be stored until I can give it away is another project on my list of things to tackle...it wouldn't feel all that satisfying to solve the problem in my office just to create a new one in my garage, if that makes sense.

girl, i feel your pain! i moved from having an entire room for my stuff to sharing my bedroom with my stuff. i have purged a lot but ive also bought a lot. when i want to scrap i move all the piles from my table onto the bed. hopefully i have no need to sit or lay on the bed before i'm done scrapping because i have to move it all back. so frustrating! i hope you find a spare shelf or bin soon 🙂

You are amazing....if I had piles of stuff I would never get anything done, yet you produce so many great layouts......perhaps there is something to your method!!

I would totally come help if I could. I love organizing. I end up purchasing a new item or repurposing an old item in this instance. Of course, that usually means a slight rearranging of things. I just went through this to get my new cameo with a bigger footprint than the old one off my desk and the 3-d printer a spot of it's very which required a new 9-cube storage center and re-using my printer stand (the printer went in the 9cube unit which I made an 8 cubicle unit). Also I rearranged to make room for a desk organizer that now has my page kits or current kit club kits in them. I'm loving the ease of access to it.

My method of cleaning up my studio is; pile everything that is out of place, into one pile. Don't pick up something and just put it where it belongs, add it to the pile. The first step, the most important, is to make the pile as big as you can. Then you start at the top of the pile and put everything back where it belongs, or into the trash. If you have too much, have a garage sale.

I might try my hand at Craigslist for some things in the near future, though. I've been doing better with just trashing things lately. Baby steps!

Your scrap space has a door? Put thin shelves behind it to store your punches, or buy a shoe holder that goes over the door to hold things. Use that newly cleared out space to store a new basket that all of your extra stuff can be tossed into when needed. Purge later.
I have 12 of those giant Lucky 8 punches. I used the Command strips to put 12 hooks on my closet doors. I zip tied the end of the punches so I could hang them all up.

I do have doors, but I am reluctant to add storage to the doors because they are about the only vertical spaces that don't have things on them. Because the room is a very odd shape with more walls than open space, I like the doors empty to separate things up a bit. I almost feel like if I added things to the walls, I'd definitely hit hoarder status when you look at everything else I own. The scary part is I'm just now finding that I REALLY enjoy mixed media and now I want all the mixed media things. I'm waiting for the next M's 60% off coupon to get more mists and am keeping my eyes peeled for texture stamps (I might have to save up to get a ton during the seconds sale from Impression Obsession this black Friday if I continue to enjoy myself).

I did a big clean-up in February...a place for everything and everything in its place...and then I remembered the big box of Christmas and general supplies in the dining room where I'd been working on cards and Journal Your Christmas. DOH! That box is sitting in my scrapbook now, waiting for me to find a place for everything in it!
It's a losing battle, is what I'm saying. :-D

I love organising but it drives me nuts when there's too much stuff and not enough storage. That's when I downsize...it sounds like what's holding you back from downsizing is what to do with the stuff that's leaving. Can you get some priority boxes from the post office (they'll even deliver a pack for free but it does take a little while - you can order online)? and purge into the boxes and then post on the for sale/trade board here as they are full? I'm sure someone would snap them up for postage and quite probably you could charge a bit as well.
I do find it helpful to have ONE spot where I put new purchases/acquistions in my scrap space and make a point of pointing them away before that space fills up - a bin or basket might be helpful for that - I just put them on my workspace and put away before I start my next project BUT I'm one of those people who clear up between projects and scrap more often than I shop so that works for ME.
Good luck!
