I want to work more with mixed media (yes, looking to dabble in something new is exactly what you should do when you're broke, lol) and want a good watercolor set to start with. I prefer a SET rather than individual colors because I won't get a good mix (I'll just look at the colors that I like right off the bat and end up lacking in areas). I'd love to be able to suggest something for my husband to get me for Mother's Day that I can get good use out of. I don't really want one with glimmer in it because I have a lot of spray mist options that can do that (and I can always put a spray of perfect pearls or some of my transparent mists over top if I want a glimmery look). I want one that is affordable (not cheap, just affordable) and that is beginner friendly. Lightfast would be a good perk since my first objective in using them would be to work on canvases to decorate my bedroom with. I'd love a nice strong pigment in them, too. Any suggestions from people who use watercolors would be greatly appreciated!

While I don't have a lot of experience with water colours I do own tons and tons of them. Maybe ahem a few too many. I liked the shininess of Twinkling H20s. I also like my Gelatos. I have a couple of big sets of water colour pencil crayons. They as well are very cool. We will learn this together!

I got this set recently based on a recommendation from Victoria Marie: Kuretake Gansai Tambi Watercolor Set. I'm really happy with them. The colors are really saturated and pretty, and there are enough different colors to get a good variety. You can get the set for about $30. Irit Landgraf has a nice review of a few sets on her YouTube channel. The ones I got were one of the ones she reviews. Irit Watercolor Video

The least expensive at 1.50 for 8 or 12 tubes are the Daiso ones. They are really nice especially the red. I am actually surprised at the quality.
Agree the Kuretake Gansai Tambi are very nice and creamy. Hobby Lobby carries them so you can use a coupon.
The Koi has a lot of colors but tend to grainier that the Tambi.
The Winsor Newton cotman are nice. Pocket sketcher set,
My favorites are the qor earth set and high chroma intro sets. They are super pigmented. They run about 25 each on Amazon.
Can you tell that I love watercolor?

I don't think it gets much cheaper than the Artist's Loft set from Michaels. I think it's around $5-7? www.michaels.com/artists-loft-fundamentals-watercolor-pan-set/10122060.html#start=1I've played with some of the other mediums suggested above, and while they are fun, if you are just starting, I think the AL set is fine for starting. I've had mine well over year, and I really like the colors and for the price can't beat it. The less water used the more pigmented, and depending on the brush, I've had no trouble fine lining and getting a good smooth dark line. I find the biggest different with watercolor is the paper and brush, so I would recommend investing in good paper.

I hated the results and the texture was off putting, to say the least. Definitely not a fan of that set. There is a 70% off sale on some canvases at Michael's today and I might swing by and nab a few when my son gets out of school. My primary incentive for mixed media is home decor, although I did make my first 12x12 mixed media layout (first 12x12 this year...I've been mostly sticking to PL) a couple of weeks ago and absolutely loved it. I just need better paper. I have the Bazzill Marshmallow in my cart on Amazon and have for a week or so now.

I've heard the Bazzill Marshmallow is great for mixed media but I haven't tried it myself. I use the Canson cold press watercolor paper in the 9x12 size. Or you can always use some Gesso on your paper or canvas first.
I have the Gansai Watercolors and LOVE them. Another great watercolor is the Peerless watercolors. These are both lightfast and have strong pigmentation.

I have the small set of Gansai Tambi watercolours - just 12 colours. I love this paint and wish I had bought the large set, but I am learning to mix colours and stuff now, so it's not too bad. The 12 colours included are gorgeous. The paint is more opaque than many watercolours, and so creamy. The set of 12 is under $15 U.S.. (I paid $18.49 Canadian at my local art store).

I got the big (36 pans) Gansai Tambi set from Kuretake for my birthday this year. They're definitely a big fave amongst the scrappy folks and I can see why: the colours are vibrant, trendy, quite opaque and easy to use. As a watercolour for watercolours' sake gal, the set is not necessarily a great fit for me. However, I'd highly recommend it if you're looking into picking up a finished colour from a pan and getting busy with it without working on mixing just the right colour you want. Here is a good in-depth review. Please keep in mind that 4 colours are not lightfast stable! Dark Pink (#34), Turquoise (#57), Menthol (#66) and Deep Blue (#67) will need to be excluded. Scroll down to the middle of this page to read and see more if you're getting some KGT.

Thanks to the enabling I just ordered a set of the GT watercolours from Amazon Happy International Scrapbook Day to me. I've linked 2 options from Prima, the Kuretake's and some Bazzill Marshmallow cardstock to my husband. I haven't seen if the Prima watercolors are lightfast or not, but if not...I'll just try and use them for in album things instead of home decor.
